Psalms of Joy and Sorrow

On October 17, the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music released the 48th CD in its pioneering recording series that documents music related to the Jewish experience in America. Titled Psalms of Joy and Sorrow, this new disc reflects the varied responses of twelve 20th- and 21st-century composers to some of the most affecting and enduring of all biblical texts-the Psalms.

Common to the liturgies, histories, and spirit of both Judaism and Christianity, the biblical Book of Psalms is one of the most widely familiar and most frequently quoted books of the Hebrew Bible. The Psalms’ sentiments and teachings, expressed in a singular blend of majestic grandeur and poignant simplicity, give them a uniquely universal resonance.

Encompassing virtually every human emotion and mood from exaltation to alienation, hope to despair, these texts have inspired musical interpretation since Jewish antiquity, with notated musical settings dating back more than ten centuries.…

MUSICA ANTIGUA DE EDUARDO PANIAGUA, a group dealing with Spanish medieval music, will perform soon in Canada. On October 26th at the Outaouais Festival de Musiques Sacrées with the program “Three Cultures (Jewish’, Muslim’ and Christiian’ Spanish medieval music and song)”. and on Oct. 28th
at the Quebec Festival de Musiques Sacrées with the program “Sefarad in Al-Andalus
(music and poetry from Hispano-Jewish Golden Age)”.

On November 4th the group will play the
“Three Cultures” program at Givatayim Theater (Tel-Aviv, Israel), and on Nov 6th at
the Jerusalem International Oud Festival, with the program “The Andalusian Oud”.

voice quartet comprising young soloists Marc Finer, Eliot
Alderman and Benjamin Seifert, joined by Benjamin Wolf. Finer,

as cantors and cantorial soloists.

Beverly Hills Concert Music and the Holocaust: Survival, Resistance and Response

“Music and the Holocaust: Survival, Resistance and Response” is a concert of
rarely heard music composed in hiding, before deportation, and in Nazi concentration
camps and ghettos.

The Concert features Choral Society of Southern California, Los Angeles Zimriyah
Chorale, USC Thornton School of Music Chamber Choir and student soloists, members of
the Los Angeles Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble ( la vie ), Cantor David Cane, and recordings made in the camps. The program will include works from various composers
in hiding, concentration camps and ghettos, including:

— Cantor David Cane’s performance of songs he was forced to sing in Auschwitz.

— A Jewish composer’s eight-minute choral work, written in the Kreuzburg Civilian
Internment Camp as a gift to Christian inmates who protected him and several other

“ZUN MIT A REGN” (Sun and Rain) in St. Petersburg

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.

7th International Conference on Music Information Retrieval

The 7th International Conference on Music Information Retrieval, ISMIR 2006, will be held at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, Canada, from Sunday October 8th to Thursday October 12th, 2006.

Toronto Jewish Folk Choir at Ashkenaz

The Toronto Jewish Folk Choir is performing Sunday, September 3, 1 p.m. in the Brigantine Room at the Ashkenaz festival in Toronto. Free admission.
This will be the second performance of In Amerike, for choir and klezmer band by Sid Robinovitch – a terrific piece that was a big hit at its premiere in June. Beyond the Pale is joining the choir, and Sid is coming in from Winnipeg to play the piano part. Toronto Jewish Folk Choir also doing a few other numbers, including a choral version of the beautiful lullabye, Rozhinkes mit mandlen (Raisins and Almonds). Alexander Veprinsky will conduct the concert, including excerpts from a medley he created for our 80th anniversary concert.

Nunemaker CD Project – Work Has Special Relevance for Today
Clarinetist Richard Nunemaker has released a new CD “The Louisville
Project”, which features Meira Warshauer’s “Shevet Achim (Brothers Dwell).”
The Louisville Project (AUR CD 3127). The piece, for two bass clarinets, is a response to the troubled
relationship between the descendants of half-brothers Yitzchak and
Yishmael (sons of Abraham), now Israelis and Palestinians. Written in
fall, 2000, the piece roils with the conflict between the two peoples,
expressing both intense animosity and common identification. It has been
observed that the most strongly felt conflicts are between peoples whose
lives and histories are intertwined on many levels.

Judaica Sound Archives at Florida Atlantic University Libraries

Located in the Wimberly Library at Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton, Florida campus, the Judaica Sound Archives has grown, since its inception in 2002, into a center for the collection and preservation of Judaica sound recordings. Its unique and rapidly expanding website (www.fau.edu/jsa) allows browsers to search their 78 rpm database by artist or song title, hear the recorded works of prominent artists, and learn more about the program to rescue recorded Jewish music. The JSA’s collection includes Yiddish theater, Israeli folk, cantorial, and Sephardic music. Their goal is to be as inclusive as possible. Access to all of the digitized recordings in the JSA’s collection is possible through dedicated “research and listening stations” in the Wimberly Library. Off-site “research and listening stations” are planned for the future.…

Herman Berlinski: From the World of My Father [8.559446]

The Milken Archive of American Jewish Music has released a CD of four works for the synagogue and the concert hall by German-born, American composer and organist Herman Berlinski. These works reflect his rich, post-Romantic musical language, eclectic musical style, and depth of Jewish inspiration. This new disc complements the Milken Archive’s 2004 release of the composer’s Avodat Shabbat, a large-scale setting of the Sabbath evening liturgy according to the American Reform prayerbook. It brings to 45 the number of recordings released since the Milken Archive CD series was launched in September 2003.

the release of the new WorldCat.org Web site.

This site—and a downloadable WorldCat search box you can easily add to
your Web site—opens the complete WorldCat database to the public, not
just the smaller data subsets utilized by Open WorldCat partner sites such
as Google, Yahoo! Search and others. WorldCat.org builds on the success of
OCLC’s Open WorldCat Program that has elevated the visibility of library
materials on the open Web since the summer of 2003.

The main attraction of the new site is the WorldCat search box. Web users
can now search the entire WorldCat database with the method most familiar

Beth Schafer Wins American Idol Underground Faith-Based Category

Beth Schafer, a contemporary American Jewish music singer-songwriter, won the Faith-based category in a contest sponsored by American Idol Underground (the online extension of the popular TV series American Idol) on July 15, 2006. Primarily a venue for Christian religious song, Beth may have had the only Jewish entry. Her English language songs, Still Small Voice and Love Multiples won an elimination round of 10 from a field of over 600 songs, and then went on to win by a popularity vote, with the public voting on their favorites. Before the big klezmer bands of the new world arose with their brass and
drums, there were the archetypical Jewish orchestras of the old world, led by
the fiddle and bourne aloft by the otherworldy sounds of the harp-like
‘tsimbl’, or Jewish hammered dulcimer. Renowned violinist Alicia Svigals, a founder
of the Klezmatics and one of the world’s foremost klezmer fiddlers, presents a program
of those ancient and ecstatic Jewish melodies, accompanied by the scene’s

The Jewish National and University Library’s Digitized Books
Repository continues to grow and now contains 340 titles of rare and
out-of-print books.
Among the items added this week:
mi-zimrat ha-arets : American national songs in Hebrew / [translated by
Gerson Rosenzweig] (New York, 1898) which contains the songs: “America,
or My country tis of thee” (le-artsenu mizmor shir), “Columbia, the
gem of the ocean (adom, lavan u-tekhelet), and “The Star spangled
banner” (degel ha-kokhavim), along with notes for singing them in
Hebrew.

Traverse the deserts of the Middle East, the mountains of northern India, and the warm waters of the Mediterranean with Eliyahu Sills and his Qadim Ensemble. The group and their music bring ancient musical traditions to a contemporary audience, allowing for a musical dialogue between the different cultures. The group performs instrumental pieces as well as songs with words in Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Turkish, Farsi and Ladino.

Qadim is a word found both in Hebrew and Arabic meaning “ancient past” and “that which precedes” as well as “forward movement” and “that which will come.” The band is aptly named as their ancient and timeless music bridges cultures from throughout the near east, such as Mizrakhi, Sephardic and Ashkenazi, with Arabic, Turkish, Persian and north Indian.…

A Musical Tour of the East European Jewish World

Zalman Mlotek, director of the Folksbiene Yiddish Theater, and his actors
will present a sampler of Yiddish music and theater, during a lecture and
performance entitled, A Musical Tour of the East European Jewish World , on
Wednesday, June 28, from 7pm to 8:30pm as part of a 3 day program on Eastern European Jewish history and Yiddish culture.

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research will sponsor a unique
three-day educational training program in Eastern European Jewish history and
Yiddish culture (EPYC), beginning Tuesday, June 27 through Thursday June 29, 2006,
at the Center for Jewish History (15 West 16th St., New York City). The EPYC
Educators Seminar will introduce lead educators to YIVO’s wealth of cultural
treasures and educational resources. Thanks to major funding by the Conference on
Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, Inc., a broad group of educators from the
United States, Canada, Mexico, Lithuania and Israel will participate in a series of
lectures and workshops presented by renowned scholars.…
