Journal of Synagogue Music Online

As you may know, The Cantors Assembly has digitized it’s past issues of the Journal of Synagogue Music online. They are available in PDF format at http://www.cantors.org/ca_jsm_docs.php along with their conference proceedings. These journal issues are searchable in a general way… that is, a search term will be found from the search in all documents with that word, but the reader will have to open the specific issues (pdf) and then use his/her Adobe Acrobat reader’s “find box” to pinpoint the keyword in the document. The reader must search each of the documents separately for the search term. Still, this is a remarkable addition to the study of Jewish music and having access to so many interesting articles from the last half century from distinguished cantors and writers is a tremendous boon to Jewish educators and all of us interested in Jewish synagogue music.…

Joseph Achron Society focuses on publication

The Joseph Achron Society, led by Sam Zerin, put out a fundraising call for publication of Achron’s works:

the Joseph Achron Society fundraiser ends tonight! Online donations are quick and easy, and will help us publish the first edition of Achron’s brilliant Paganini Caprice transcriptions!

You know as well as I do: more than half of Achron’s important legacy has never been published — despite high praise from the likes of Heifetz and Schoenberg — and thus remains inaccessible to most of today’s performers.

For the first time in almost 100 years, the Achron-Paganini Caprices will be easily available in print to performers world-wide! Let us work together. Help us with a tax-deductible donation today — and receive a free score!

Here is the link again: http://www.razoo.com/story/Achron-Paganini-Caprices

Thank you for your help.…

Monajat featuring Galleet Dardashti

Thursday, September 15 · 8:00pm – 9:30pm

Granoff Performance Center, Tufts University
20 Talbot Avenue
Medford, MA 02155

Monajat (Fervent Prayer) by innovative performer Galeet Dardashti, is inspired by Selihot, the poetic prayers of forgiveness recited during the month preceding the Jewish High Holidays according to the Middle Eastern tradition. Dardashti, a musician and anthropologist of Persian descent, re-imagines the Selihot ritual in collaboration with an acclaimed ensemble of musicians, an electronic soundscape, and dynamic video projections by video artist and designer Dmitry Kmelnitsky.

As only one of six cities in the US where this dynamic concert will happen, the Boston Jewish Music Festival is very excited to have been selected by the Foundation for Jewish Culture to present this important new work along with our co-presenters, the New Center for Jewish Arts and Culture, the Tufts University Music Department and Tufts Hillel.…

Unfortunately, due to a combination of financial factors, including the slowdown of the music industry, JDub will close its doors. For those who help promote young artists, this is a blow. You can read about it here:
