On February 2 at 1pm, in Schnurmacher Chapel, Chamber Music at Rodeph
Sholom will celebrate Sephardic Melody, a rich cultural heritage
expressed both in contemporary music and traditional, which blends
influences from the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, Turkey, Greece,
and the Mediterranean. Guest artists, Paul Woodiel, on fiddle, and

The all women’s klezmer sextet, ISLE OF KLEZBOS, will perform at the Jewish Museum’s “SummerNights” Series on Thursday, July 25 2013 as the final concert. Isle of Klezbos plays imaginative versions of eclectic Eastern European-rooted Jewish folk music, Yiddish swing and tango.

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society to celebrate 20th anniversary

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, 2006. Under the direction of Rose Grausman, this mixed choir performs a very wide range of
music, including classical, opera, jazz and musicals, as well as popular and folk music from all over the world. The S.J.C.S. regularly performs Yiddish, Ladino and Hebrew folk music, Hebrew liturgical settings, and stunning Hebrew musical settings
by composers from Rossi in the 16th century through Kurt Weil and Leonard Bernstein in the 20th, and has given premieres of hitherto unpublished choral works by Jewish composers.

A non-profit organisation, the S.J.C.S. performs regularly in concerts which support Jewish and general charities and gives free performances at Jewish retirement homes and activity centres.

The conference aims to show the current state of research on Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish (Ladino, Judezmo) as well as their present condition and importance as part of the legacy of the Jewish Diaspora. From “West Side Story” to “Wicked,” the music of the Broadway theatre
will be highlighted at the “Cantors’ Cabaret” concert at 7p.m.,
Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 W 83rd Street off

Joining Rodeph Sholom’s Cantor Rebecca Garfein and Cantorial

On 25 March, 2007, in the advent of Yom HaShoah veHaG’vurah, the Felicia Blumenthal Music Center in Tel-Aviv will present a concert of art songs by Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson (1904-1992). Composed before his deportation, during his imprisonment in the concentration camps of Vichy France, and after his escape from his captors, the music is set to texts of Yiddish and Hebrew poets such as Sutzkewer, Reisen, Rosenfeld, Kipnis, Bialik, and Tschernchowsky. The songs give expression to manifold aspects of Jewish life in the Diaspora, the anxieties of survival, and joy in the renaissance of national Jewish life in the old new homeland. Born in the former Czechoslovakia, Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson’s creative process was nourished by the musical traditions of the former Austro-Hungary and the ancient modes of Jewish liturgy.…

Shostakovich at 100 – A Community Concert

Celebrating the centennial of Russia’s leading 20th century composer,
The Jewish Music Commission of Los Angeles (JMCLA) presents a free
community concert. Featuring special guest Joseph Dorfman, concert
pianist, composer, and Shostakovich scholar at Buchman-Mehta School of
Music (Tel Aviv University), the concert will showcase performances by
Barry Gold (cello), Mark Kashper (violin), David Kasap (accordion), Hila
Plitmann (soprano), Alma Mora (mezzo-soprano), Mark Saltzman (tenor) and Neal Brostoff (piano). Dorfman will perform his “Trio, in Memoriam
Dimitri Shostakovich” (1976). Shostakovich’s “From Jewish Folk Poetry,”
op. 79 (1948), written at the height of Soviet cultural repression and
featuring Russian translations of Yiddish folk poetry, will also be
performed.…

B’nai B’rith Radio, the first 24-hour Jewish music Radio Station

Washington, D.C. –B’nai B’rith Radio, the first 24-hour Jewish music radio station located in the United States began broadcasting on the Internet Oct. 18, 2004.

B’nai B’rith Radio, sponsored by B’nai B’rith International (BBI), plays Jewish music from all over the world through its website, www.bnaibrithradio.org.

Unlike most Internet radio, it is free both of charge and commercials. The station is fully subsidized by BBI and its members and supporters.

Along with an eclectic Judaic play list-which includes traditional Yiddish, secular Israeli, Jewish American, Instrumental, and Chasidic music -there will be special programming like Saturday night sing-a-longs, a remembrance program for slain former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, and festive holiday shows during the Chanukah and Sukkot seasons.

Jonathan Keren Premiere Featured at The Israeli Chamber Project with Samuel Rhodes

JTS Presents: The Israeli Chamber Project with Samuel Rhodes, an Evening of Chamber Music from The Juilliard School featuring Tibi Cziger (clarinet), Michal Korman (cello), Assaff Weisman (piano), Carmit Zori (violin), with special guest artist Samuel Rhodes (viola) will take place on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. at The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), located at 3080 Broadway (corner 122nd Street) in New York City. The Israeli Chamber Project (ICP) will perform a wide-ranging program of favorite classics and recent works influenced by Jewish culture, including music of Mozart, Schulhoff, Brahms, and the New York premiere of music by Israeli composer Jonathan Keren.

Admission to the concert is by ticket only. Tickets are $10 each; students with a valid school ID—as well as JTS alumni, faculty, students, and staff—may request up to two free tickets each.…

This paper is part of an ongoing project on the analysis of Jewish
cantillation in the Eastern Ashkenazic tradition. Jewish cantillation involves
the intoned reading of Biblical texts with melodies determined by accent
marks (te’amim) in printed Hebrew bibles. In other parts of the study, Malin
has explored aspects of the system broadly: how the melodies correlate with
and project text phrasing, and how they vary depending on the reading and
occasion.
