A special night of music featuring the tsimbl– also known as the cimbalom or Jewish/Eastern European hammered dulcimer. A string instrument played like a xylophone, the tsimbl employs over 100 strings to create a mystical harp-like sonority. It was a popular instrument in Jewish klezmer ensembles across Eastern Europe from the 1500’s through the first decades of the twentieth century.
All woman’s quartet of Sephardic and Middle Eastern Jewish music, using tabla, cello, rabel, and other acoustics, plus vocals in Hebrew, Judeo-Spanish, Persian and Aramaic. Galeet Dardashti, leader, is the granddaughter of Yona Dardashti, one of the most famous singers of Persian classical music in Iran, and daughter of Hazzan Farid Dardashti. Lauren DeAlbert, percussion; Michal Raizen, cello; Emily Pinkerton, violin, rabel, banjo, and secondary vocals. Group based in Austin, Texas. The group has produced a CD by the same name.

The Shira Center attracts girls from all over NorthWest London. Formed just two years ago, the center responds to the growing London interest from religious women and girls in choral training and singing. It has provided Jewish musical opportunities and entertainment for girls and women from all over London. The center is made up of five different choirs, and classes for singers of all ages and abilities. They have released a CD called “Silver Lining” which is gaining huge popularity. Their website has more information about attending some of the classes and concerts. Dena Cohen appears to be a resident composer attached to the groups.

This band, formed in the 1970’s at the Diaspora Yeshiva in Jerusalem, combines American bluegrass, rock and country music with the chassidic nigun. They gained fame after garnering prizes at the Chassidic Music Festival in Israel in the late 1970’s. Today the band consists of eight members and has produced six albums including Melave Malke, At the Gate of Return, The Diaspora Yeshiva Band, and Land of Our Fathers. Participants and observers will learn about the historical background and
cultural context of this Jewish music and the associated dances. They will
then have the opportunity to gain hands-on (or feet-on!) experience,
choosing either to study the music (style, ornamentation, accompaniment) in
more depth, or to learn some of the dances with experienced dance leader and
drummer Guy Schalom, with live music from members of the band. No previous
knowledge of klezmer music or dance required. Instrumentalists should be
grade 4 equivalent or above.

Born, Nishny-Novgorod, 1883. Died, Moscow, April 22, 1951. Composer. Distinctive member of The Society for Jewish Folk Music in Moscow at the beginning of the twentieth century. Attended Moscow Conservatory starting around 1897, graduating 1908. Active in the modern music division of the Commission for Folklore, and also in the mid-1920s, wrote music for the Russian Jewish theaters, the Moscow Jewish State Theater and the The White Russian Jewish State Theater. His most important work, the symphonic cantata “Kaddish” for mixed chorus, tenor and orchestra (1921-22), thought lost for many years, was recently recovered in Russia. His music captures the “Hebraic” flavor, including Hebrew Caprice, The Night at the Old Market Place, Gazelles and Songs and Hebrew Sketches.

After college, Silver landed a job as an on-air personality at WMJX, Magic 106.7 in Boston, a contemporary music radio station. Their differing roots and their multiple passion for music unites them: YAEL NAIM releases a second, four-handed album together with DAVID DONATIEN, as a new collection of graceful songs.
After the worldwide success of the feel-good album, released in 2007, YAEL NAIM unveils her second album today « She Was a Boy ». Closeted in a Parisian apartment for two years, YAEL NAIM and DAVID DONATIEN perfected Yael’s songs in Hebrew and English, which culminated in a commercial and artistic success (Victoire de la Musique 2008, for the Album of the Year World Music category).
A new series MUZIKA produced by Shalom TV is available online. Their first portrait is of Noa (Achinoam Nini), the Israeli singing star. It’s a good show, with interviews and clips of her performing. You will learn a lot about Noa, already one of our favorite musicians.

It features gypsy songs sung by Annette Ezekiel…. but this is music for the younger generation, being edgy, sexy and very vibrant.
