Amnon Shiloah Z”l

Amnon Shiloah, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Jewish music passed away in Jerusalem on Jul 11 2014 at the age of 85.
A long-time professor of musicology at Hebrew
University, Amnon Shiloah was an internationally respected and widely published
authority on Arabic and Middle Eastern Jewish musical traditions, a
scholar who did both ethnomusicological fieldwork and traditional
historical research. Prof. Shiloah was a prolific author of books and
articles, and editor of records; He did an immense amount of groundbreaking fieldwork. His most valuable work may be his large
bibliographic compendium and his magnum opus “The Theory of Music in
Arabic Writings ca.900-1900” published by RILM in 1979.

East European Jewish Archive and Library Saved from
the Destruction of the Holocaust to be Reunited After 70 Years

Vilnius, Lithuania (September 23, 2014) – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce the launch of The Vilna Project, a seven-year international project to preserve, digitize and virtually reunite YIVO’s prewar archives located in New York City and Vilnius, Lithuania, through a dedicated web portal. The Project will also digitally reconstruct the historic Strashun Library of Vilna, one of the great prewar libraries in Europe. Project partners are The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, The Central State Archives of Lithuania and the National Library of Lithuania.

In 1941, the Nazis destroyed YIVO in Vilna and ransacked the archives and library.…

The Jerusalem Lyric Trio

Amalia Ishak, soprano; Wendy Eisler-Kashy, flute; and Allan Sternfield, piano are the trio’s performers. The Jerusalem Lyric Trio is an Israeli ensemble that highlights the religious and cultural heritage of the Jewish people in its performances. Since 1995, they have performed our programs throughout Western and Eastern Europe, the United States, South America, Russia, and of course, Israel.
The Trio’s repertoire, in addition to familiar classical repertoire, includes works inspired by biblical texts, Jerusalem, the landscape of Israel, the Holocaust, and familiar songs (in Hebrew, Yiddish, and Ladino). Mezzo-soprano. Born in Germany to Argentinian parents in 1973. Grew up in Venezuela. She played and sang with her musical family Latin American folk music. She formally studied singing and choral conducting in Buenos Aires, and completed her training at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. Her repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the avant-garde and from folk to tango, including oratorio, opera, and works written especially for her. Since 1999, she conceived and produced programs on Latin American and European 20th Century music, Yiddish song, cabaret and tango. She also performed in renowned venues in Buenos Aires and Europe. Oxford publishes Tina Fruhauf’s book on German Jewish organ music

Tina Fruhauf Organ and Its Music in German-Jewish Culture Oxford University Press has released the scholarly work of Dr. Tina Fruhauf, The Organ and Its Music in German-Jewish Culture. The press descriptions states that the book “examines the powerful but often overlooked presence of the organ in synagogue music and the musical life of German-speaking Jewish communities. Tina Frühauf expertly chronicles the history of the organ in Jewish culture from the earliest references in the Talmud through the 19th century, when it had established a firm and lasting presence in Jewish sacred and secular spaces in central Europe. Frühauf demonstrates how the introduction of the organ into German synagogues was part of the significant changes which took place in Judaism after the Enlightenment, and posits the organ as a symbol of the division of the Jewish community into Orthodox and Reform congregations.…

Reisenberg, Nadia

Born 14 July 1904, in Vilna, Lithuania, Nadia Reisenberg moved with her family to St. Petersburg in 1915 where she studied piano at the Conservatory under Leonid Nikolaiev. After the Russian revolution, the family moved, going from Vilna, where Nadia played in the Gelios Theatre accompanying movies, to Poland where she concertized with the Warsaw Philharmonic, to Germany. The Reisenberg s came to America in 1922. Under the helpful largesse of Isaac Sherman, Nadia gave private recitals and began to build a reputation.

With less than one year of study with Alexander Lambert in New York, she gave her American debut on 17 December 1922, playing the Polish Fantasy by Ignace Paderewski, with the composer at the performance in the Century Theatre. With sterling reviews by the press, the young Miss Reisenberg began to receive invitations for more recitals.…

Israeli conductor. Graduated the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and the Music School of the Indiana University. Chorus master in operatic productions of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the batons of Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Daniel Barenboim and Kurt Masur. Works with professional choirs such as the Philharmonia Singers Choir and the New Vocal Ensemble. Won first prizes in international choirs’ contests – such as Malta (1998), Spain (2000) and Belgium (2001). With the Ensemble he was also invited to participate in the choir festival in Korea during the 2002 Mondial and to perform in Sardinia in 2003. Ben-Ozer is also the music director of the international choir festival “The Zimria”. Conducts the Kibbutz Artzi Choir.

SPECIAL JULY 17 CONCERT OF REMEMBRANCE AND CELEBRATION; 60th ANNIVERSARY OF ISRAEL,
WITH EXCERPTS FROM CHILDREN S OPERA BRUNDIBAR
Usdan Center For the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), America’s
premier summer arts day camp, will present its annual Festival Concerts, private
30-minute educational performances, just for Usdan students, at its on-site
1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, beginning Monday June 30.

A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and
Celebration; 60th Anniversary of Israel, hosted by the international concert
presenter and programmer Caroline Stoessinger. The concert will include excerpts

Sacred Service has rarely been presented by young people, and its
performance on August 4th will be an artistic point of pride for Usdan, and
for its partner organization, UJA-Federation of New York.

Usdan’s senior orchestra and chorus will close the Center’s August 4th Gala
Concert with two parts of Sacred Service. The ensembles, composed of high

This year’s Ud U’fiyyut (a co-production of the JMRC and the Confederation House in Jerusalem, in the framework of the International ‘Ud Festival Jerusalem, 2006) bears the title:
Mi-qeddem U-miyyam: The Legacy of Asher Mizrahi

This concert is dedicated to the work of Asher Mizrahi – poet, musician, composer, artist and a teacher of Hebrew and music – who was born in Jerusalem in 1890, lived more than 40 years in Tunisia, and died in Jerusalem in 1967. Mizrahi wrote songs in Ladino, Hebrew Piyyutim of longing to Zion, as well as Arab-Tunisian songs, performed in the 1930′ and 1940′ by the most prominent musicians of his time, both Jews and Arabs.

The ‘Ud Ufiyyut series, initiated by the Jewish Music Research Centre at the Hebrew University, together with the Confederation House in Jerusalem as part of the International ‘Us Festival, Jerusalem, is meant to bring closer the academia and the stage.…

Washington, D.C. –B’nai B’rith Radio, the first 24-hour Jewish music radio station located in the United States began broadcasting on the Internet Oct. 18, 2004.

B’nai B’rith Radio, sponsored by B’nai B’rith International (BBI), plays Jewish music from all over the world through its website, www.bnaibrithradio.org.

Unlike most Internet radio, it is free both of charge and commercials. The station is fully subsidized by BBI and its members and supporters.

The Columbia University Series on Klezmer Music and Yiddish Song opens its
2005-2006 series on Monday, December 12, 2005, 8:00 PM, with a klezmer concert
and Yiddish dance party featuring the Strauss/Warschauer Duo and the Columbia
Klezmer Band.

Launching of National Cantorial Scholarship Initiative
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, legendary American Jewish composer,
singer, and recording artist, Debbie Friedman, will be the featured
performer at a concert to benefit Hebrew Union College – Jewish
Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) and its School of Sacred Music (SSM).

“Debbie & Friends” will also include performances by The Afro-Semitic
Experience, HaZamir (the International Jewish High School Choir), The
Western Wind, HUC-JIR Alumni, Faculty and Students, as well as surprise
guests. All will be performing the music of the woman who the Jerusalem
Post has called a “phenomenon” and the New York Times has lauded for
creating “a powerful and euphoric body of work.”

In 2007, Debbie was appointed to the Faculty of the Hebrew Union College

Cantors Sing Broadway for Benefit

From “West Side Story” to “Wicked,” the music of the Broadway theatre
will be highlighted at the “Cantors’ Cabaret” concert at 7p.m.,

Sokol performs seldom-sung Brice – musical gems from Burlesque and Vaudeville to The Ziegfeld Follies and Film – and poignantly reinvents familiar favorites. Hashkivenu #2, Sylke Zimpel’s arrangement of the familiar
folk tune Tumbalalaika, and compelling psalm settings by contemporary

The world of Yiddish culture will be honoring Adrienne Cooper z”l with a concert to celebrate her life and work. Adrienne is best remembered as the magnificent voice of Yiddish song and teacher to thousands in the Yiddish and klezmer music worlds. Dec 22 2012 in NYC, there will be a concert that is bound to attract you and your friends, as well as plenty of the contemporary Jewish music world. The goal of the concert is to raise money to help establish a fund to continue her work, not just in recordings but for teaching for future generations.
