Free Synagogue Cantor with Choir

As its Chanukkah gift to the community, the Free Synagogue of Flushing will present a special performance of Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus on Friday, December 19, 8:15 PM.

The Bible-based musical masterwork, which tells the story of Chanukkah, is FREE and open to the public.

It will feature celebrated Cantor Steven Pearlston and the distinguished Free Synagogue choir.
Robert Barrows will play the synagogue s historic pipe organ, which dates back to
1927, the only pipe organ at a synagogue in Queens. Jason Covey and Charles Grauman will be featured on trumpet. The program will be narrated by Rabbi Michael Weisser in the synagogue s magnificent sanctuary.

Handel s oratorio tells the story of Judas Maccabaeus, better known as Judah
Maccabee, a fearless leader acclaimed as one of the greatest warriors in

Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn at The Jewish Museum

A recent acquisition to The Jewish Museum, Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, 1842, by
19th century German artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, has been added to
the “Modernity” section of Culture and Continuity. The subject of this
portrait was the sister of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy,
a talented composer and musician in her own right. Fanny Hensel was
the wife of a fellow painter, Wilhelm Hensel, whom Oppenheim met in Rome
with the Nazarenes.

Ten years later, he succeeded his father as conductor of the choir, a position he held until his immigration to Melbourne in 1993. On arrival in Melbourne Brett took up the position of Musical Director of both the North Eastern Synagogue Choir and the Keren Or Choir. It was at this time that Brett commenced his formal training in operatic studies, which culminated in him winning the coveted “Lygon Street Festa Best New Voice of the Year” award sponsorship, by the then Victorian State Opera His prize was a ticket and scholarship to study opera in Italy and London.…

“Judas Maccabeus” in St. Louis

The St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music and the University City Symphony
Orchestra will collaborate for the second year in a row in a sing-along
performance of George Friderick Handel’s “Judas Maccabeus” December 11th,
2004. The concert will take place at 7:30 pm at Shaare Zedek Synagogue,
829 N. Hanley Road in University City, a suburb of St. Louis. Other music
to be performed includes “Shirey Chanukah” by Abraham Cohen, and a
newly-commissioned piece in honor of the centennial of Shaare Zedek, being
written by film composer Sheldon Mirowitz. Audience members may purchase
the piano-vocal score at the door, which serves as a ticket in all
following years, and are encouraged to sing along with the choruses.

puppet theater production of “The Dybbuk” here in Portland.
(Since then I’ve worked on two other productions of the same
play, leading me to speculate that while possession might

9/10 of my musical activity.)

The Toronto Jewish Folk Choir celebrates its 85th annual
Spring concert by commemorating the original immigrant workers who founded
the choir. Its performance – under conductor Alexander Veprinsky – features
special guests Beyond The Pale (2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards’
Instrumental Group of the Year).

On stage in Alon Shvut, Gush Etzion, Israel is the season’s newest SMASH
HIT musical production – RUTH & NAOMI in the Fields of Bethlehem.

RUTH & NAOMI is the fourth production of the Efrat/Gush Etzion Raise Your Spirits
Summer Stock Festival. It follows Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “JOSEPH & The Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat” and two other original musicals, “ESTHER & The Secrets in The
King’s Court” and “NOAH! Ride the Wave!” “ESTHER,” “NOAH!” and “RUTH & NAOMI” were
all written by the team of Arlene Chertoff, Toby Klein Greenwald and Sharon Katz.
The music for “RUTH & NAOMI” was composed by Mitch Clyman.

Raise Your Spirits has already performed for more than 20,000 women and raised more
than 400,000 NIS for charity.

This year’s production is totally sold out until the middle of November, but tickets
