Musicians of Lenox Hill to Perform Chamber Music of Jewish Composers

On Monday, April 28 at 8 PM, the Musicians of Lenox
Hill, under the artistic direction of Soo-Kyung Park, will perform Chamber Music
of Jewish Composers at Temple Israel of the City of New York, 112 East 75th Street,

Svigals-Rushefsky in “Mahler’s World: Jewish Music in the Hapsburg Empire”

Klezmer violin superstar Alicia Svigals
returns to the Maverick on July 14 at 8:00 p.m. with tsimblist Pete
Rushefsky.

Ms. Svigals and Mr. Rushefsky brought down the house last summer at
Maverick, and this year¹s concert is called “Mahler¹s World: Jewish Music in
the Hapsburg Empire.” The concert is part of Maverick¹s season-long
celebration of the centenary of Gustav Mahler¹s arrival in America to lead
the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

Classical concerts are Saturday evenings at 6:00 and Sunday afternoons at
3:00, with jazz, world music, and klezmer on selected Saturday nights at
8:00. Young people¹s concerts are Saturday mornings at 11:00.

The box office opens an hour before each concert; the hall opens half an
hour before curtain time. Except for the last weekend of the season, ticket
prices are $20 for adults and $5 for students.…

Study Jewish Music at SOAS

The School of Oriental and African Studies, part of the University of
London, offers unique opportunities for the study of Jewish musics.

The SOAS Music department runs BA, MMus and PhD degree programmes; all focus
on world music, with the opportunity to specialize in regional traditions
including Jewish musics, and to receive high- level training in performance.
In the BA, Music can be combined with language studies, Development Studies,
Anthropology and many other academic disciplines, while PhD projects can be
practice-led, fieldwork-based, or theoretical.

SOAS is the only university in the UK with a dedicated lectureship in Jewish

Adrienne Cooper: A Yiddish Light Goes Out

Adrienne Cooper Khane-freyde bas beyle-buni z”l.

Adrienne Cooper (1946-2011), a leading light of Yiddish song died early last night, December 25, of cancer in Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Ms. Cooper, one of the world’s top figures of Yiddish music, brought Yiddish folk and theater music to modern audiences. She was a valued performer, not only for her impressive vocal qualities, but her masterful interpretive style and tremendous stage presence. She presented Yiddish song in such an expressive way that any audience could understand and appreciate it. Along with her feminist social conscience, she was a mentor and leader to thousands of musicians and students. She helped co-found “Klezkamp” and spread Yiddish culture throughout the world. She is survived by a daughter, Sara Gordon, and partner Marilyn Lerner, two brothers and her mother.…

Applications are now open for the Israeli Music Competition and the Ernest Bloch Music Competition.

The Israeli Music Competition was begun in 2008 and aims to familarise both professionals and students with the fascinating styles of Israeli music – a rich tapestry of sounds which produce a musical blend without equal; a fusion of Western musical idioms such as Klezmer (brought over with the first immigrants in the 1880s), and Eastern traditions brought by Jews from Arab countries.

The Ernest Bloch Music Competition was begun in 2009. Ernest Bloch (24 July 1880 ‚Äì 15 July 1959) was a Swiss-born, American-Jewish composer and, since the 50th anniversary of his death was commemorated in 2009, the addition of the Ernest Bloch Music Competition to the Israeli Music Competition has drawn much worldwide interest.…

Mezzo-soprano. Born in Germany to Argentinian parents in 1973. Grew up in Venezuela. She played and sang with her musical family Latin American folk music. She formally studied singing and choral conducting in Buenos Aires, and completed her training at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. Her repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the avant-garde and from folk to tango, including oratorio, opera, and works written especially for her. Since 1999, she conceived and produced programs on Latin American and European 20th Century music, Yiddish song, cabaret and tango. She also performed in renowned venues in Buenos Aires and Europe. British. Pianist. Born, London, 2 Feb. 1888, Died London, 11 January, 1971. Ida and Tobias Scharrer’s third child. She first studied with her mother, Ida. At the age of twelve she won a scholarship to study with Tobias Matthay at the Royal Academy of Music in London. At her first Royal Academy student concert in 1901, Scharrer played Chopin s Rondo in E flat Op. 16 & “with wonderful finish and very remarkable technical skill.” Her Debut was 1904. According to Naxos music, Myra Hess was not a cousin, but she was someone with whom Irene played duos often, and with whom she gave her last public concert in 1958. Early in her career Scharrer toured widely, performing in Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Scandinavia and the United States.…

The largest festival of Jewish music in the US celebrates its landmark
anniversary in Berkeley, San Francisco and Marin. Highlights include
members of Israel’s East West Ensemble with the Omar Faruk Tekbilek
Ensemble, Theodore Bikel with Hankus Netsky, the Klezmatics with Joshua Nelson, Community Music Day with an Instrument Petting Zoo, Hebrew hip-hop, and workshops for all ages; Judith Cohen, a leading scholar of Sephardic music, and Emil Zrihan, an extraordinary Israeli counter-tenor and cantor of the Moroccan tradition in a sneak preview of a new work with America’s leading, San Francisco based new music string quartet.

The Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz sounds like a contradiction in terms. How could beautiful music be produced by an orchestra surrounded by illness and death, starvation and cold, immense suffering, hatred and loss? Yet, participation in this orchestra was likely the source of salvation for the “orchestra girls.” This concert will give voice to their experiences and, in so doing, remember not only those who survived, but also those who perished.…

JTS will host a performance of excerpts and discussion of two important new operas: As One (music by Laura Kaminsky, libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed), following a transgender woman’s journey to self-acceptance. The other is Steal a Pencil for Me (music by H. L. Miller Cantorial School Assistant Professor Gerald Cohen, libretto by Deborah Brevoort), the story of a real-life couple who fell in love while imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. Following the performance, the two composers, Laura Kaminsky and Gerald Cohen, will discuss their operas’ creation. Cantor Nancy Abramson, director of H. L. Miller Cantorial School, will moderate the discussion.

Yiddish operetta “Di Goldene Kale (The Golden Bride)” at Rutgers August 5

August 5 2015 at 7pm at Rutgers University in New Jersey will be the first orchestrated performance in 70 years of the Operetta “di Goldene Kale” The Golden Bride with music by Joseph Rumshinsky. This performance will showcase the reconstruction of the operetta by Michael Ochs, a scholar and librarian who worked at Harvard and found the manuscript there 35 years ago. Di Goldene Kale became a smash hit for Rumshinsky who wrote beautiful romantic melodies. Zalman Mlotek of the Folksbiene National Yiddish Theater in NYC will conduct. Isle of Klezbos Performs at Jewish Museum SummerNights Series

The all women’s klezmer sextet, ISLE OF KLEZBOS, will perform at the Jewish Museum’s “SummerNights” Series on Thursday, July 25 2013 as the final concert. Isle of Klezbos plays imaginative versions of eclectic Eastern European-rooted Jewish folk music, Yiddish swing and tango.
This event also includes an open bar with wine and light refreshments.
Doors open at 7pm, and the concert begins at 7:30pm.
The Jewish Museum is located at Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street, Manhattan.
July 25 concert tickets are $15 for the general public; $12 for students and seniors;

White Christmas: The Story of an American Song

Writing a popular book about a popular song should merit some attention, so it’s not surprising that no less than four items appeared in The New York Times about this book. It’s supposed to be a book about one song. But, of course, it isn’t really. It’s a book about acculturation, assimilation and cultural impact. For readers of the Jewish Music WebCenter, these issues raised by White Christmas, may ultimately deal out the moral: we have only ourselves to “blame” –or– “congratulate” –as the view may be.

Irving Berlin, born as Izzy Baline, was of the generation of Jewish immigrants who wanted nothing more than to be thoroughly assimilated and thoroughly American. Berlin was one of the most successful examples of this, both in his personal and professional life.…

3rd International Jewish Music Competition in Amsterdam

The Third International Jewish Music Competition will be held at the
Compagnie theater in the heart of Amsterdam’s old city center and on
the edge of the city’s Jewish Cultural Quarter This competition is for individual musicians, ensembles and bands specializing in performing Jewish music and whose goal is an international career performing this repertoire.

Judah Magnes Museum Library and Archives

The Judah Magnes Museum, located in Berkeley, California is open to the public. The Library contains Jewish recorded music and sheet music. Among the collections are a large number of 78 recordings. The Museum asks researchers to phone first and make an appointment at 510-549-6939. They are generally open Sundays–Thursdays, but closed on Jewish and Federal holidays, and are located at 2911 Russell Street, Berkeley, CA 94705.

On December 16, the Center for Jewish Studies and the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center of the CUNY Graduate Center will present Beyond Boundaries: Klezmer Music in the 21st Century. Featuring distinguished klezmer performers, scholars, cultural commentators, and composers, the program includes an afternoon symposium with music (at 3:00 p.m.) and an evening concert (at 7:00 p.m.). This event is part of the Beyond Boundaries Series in Jewish Music, launched by the Center for Jewish Studies in Spring 2008.
