cabarets of musicians and singers. Songs ranged from the sad
and deeply somber in response to the death and horrific
conditions within and without of the Ghettos, to parodies on the

the war. The caliber was so high as to attract the attendance of
German soldiers out of uniform.

Where but YouTube would you be able to hear a new version of a national anthem? The Forward newspaper asked Neshama Carlebach to sing Hatikvah, but not just any recording. The article was suggesting some new lyrics that could potentially be more inclusive to all Israelis of whatever creed, color or religion in a democratic society. This proposed change is not just for Arabs (not Palestinians, but Israeli Arabs), but also may resonate with other minorities now living in Israel including Christians, Bahai, Druze, Buddhists and peoples of other faiths and ethnic groups.
Neshama Carlebach, daughter of the late Shlomo Carlebach, took up the idea and has released a YouTube video with the suggested new and “old”-er texts. Of course the lyrics of this song “Hatikvah” have been changed before, and also those other famous Jewish songs, such as “Jerusalem of Gold.” Each time, these changes have come about due to changes in historic circumstances.…

This paper is part of an ongoing project on the analysis of Jewish
cantillation in the Eastern Ashkenazic tradition. Jewish cantillation involves
the intoned reading of Biblical texts with melodies determined by accent
marks (te’amim) in printed Hebrew bibles. In other parts of the study, Malin

Composed over 100 orchestral and chamber works. Scored Broadway musicals and films. Director of Young People’s, Family, and Free Summer concert programs for the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Wrote a book:Offbeat: Collaborating With Kerouac (2002). Also plays a variety of folk instruments. Known for his work with jazzmen Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Charlie Mingus, Thelonius Monk and Lionel Hampton. The Washington Posthailed Amram as “one of the most versatile and skilled musicians America has ever produced.” Amram’s family were from Savannah, GA, but he grew up in Pennsylvania and Washington DC. Wrote The Sacred Servicein early 1960s. It was commissioned by the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York, where it had its premiere in 1962.…

Hungarian band formed in 2001 mixing “traditional Jewish music (klezmer, sephard, folk-sacral) with jazz and and free-improv elements.” Members of the band:András Párniczky: guitar; Kristóf Bacsó: alt-, and szopran saxofon; Péter Nagy: bass; Csaba Gavallér: drums, derbuka;Featuring: Dániel Váczi: sopran saxofon; János Vázsonyi: alt saxofon. They perform in venues around Hungary and in festivals around Europe.

Rock star of the Reform/BBYO/Hillel movements, Rick Recht concertizes widely throughout the United States. “Recht also won the 2001 American Zionist Movement and 2000 American Jewish Festival songwriting contests.” According to his website, he has played at over 70 Jewish camps. Recht has amassed a huge following in the teen/20-something community. He has albums, “Tov”, “Shabbat Alive” and “Free to be the Jew in me” and he composes on commission for camps and Jewish venues. His website states: “His contribution to the Jewish music world marks the birth of a unique blend of pop, radio-friendly music with Hebrew, Jewish text, and social responsibility.” But there doesn’t seem to be any question of his growing popularity.

Broken down into individual pieces, there are 725 different tracks to cover not only Shabbat, but the entire weekday, festival and high holiday services. If you are a person who needs to learn the nusach to lead a service, this is THE place. It’s a completely easy way to find the exact passage in the siddur and follow along. Highly Recommended.

On Saturday, September 13, will be playing as part of the inaugural “Arts in the Park” festival in the Sudbrook Park neighborhood of Pikesville, MD. The festival, which will feature live music, arts, and crafts, will take place at the Sudbrook Stream Valley Park. It’s free. Concert goers are encouraged to bring some chairs or blankets and make a day of it. The group will be playing from 3 until 4 pm. The Kelly Bell Band will be headlining at 5 pm.
