60th Anniversary of Israel in New York at Radio City

The official observation of the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel’s
60th Anniversary in New York will take place at 8PM on Wednesday May 7th with a
major musical gala at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The event will feature
Reggae superstar Matisyahu, Paul Shaffer of the David Letterman Show,
composer/performer and MacArthur Genius award winner John Zorn and top Israeli
music artists Idan Raichel, Rami Kleinstein, David Broza and Habanot Nechama, with
additional performers to be announced.

The historic cultural gathering will be the largest such celebration of its kind,
and is supported by over 100 Jewish organizations including the UJA Federation of
New York, Consulate General of Israel, Jewish Community Relations Council, Dor
Chadash and other key groups representing a majority of the organized American

The Judah Magnes Museum, located in Berkeley, California is open to the public. The Library contains Jewish recorded music and sheet music. Among the collections are a large number of 78 recordings. “ZUN MIT A REGN” (Sun and Rain) in St. Petersburg

The Amsterdam Jewish Music Projects Foundation will be taking part in
the Russian Centennial Celebration for Dmitri Shostakovich with the
programme “Zun mit a regn” (Sun and Rain) that is to be performed at the
Shostakovich Conferences in St. Petersburg on 12 and 13 October. The
programme, which premiered in the Netherlands, includes chamber music and
songs composed by Shostakovich himself and by his friends Mieczyslaw
Weinberg and Veniamin Basner. The central source of inspiration for the
works on the programme is the music of the Jewish people, oppressed in
Russia during the Stalin regime. The works will be performed by singer
Sovali (soprano), violinist Grigory Sedukh, cellist Alexander Oratovski and
pianist Paul Prenen. The performances are supported by the Wilhelmina E.
Jansen Fund.

YIVO to Digitize Ruth Rubin Field Recordings

Lorin Sklamberg, Sound Archivist at YIVO writes:

We [YIVO] have indeed begun the work of digitizing Ruth Rubin’s collection of field recordings. A large portion of the materials were transferred and databased by Bay Area singer/instrumentalist Jeanette Lewicki over the summer with the support of New York’s Center for Traditional Music and Dance. Though far from completed, the tracks that have been processed are currently being prepared for on-site use in the not-too-distant future by YIVO Sound Archives consultant Matt Temkin.

Renewed interest in these treasures can be partially attributed to the posthumous publication of Yiddish Folksongs from the Ruth Rubin Archives edited by Chana Mlotek and Mark Slobin (Wayne University Press, 2007). Recent projects that utilize the songs include my own Saints and Tzadiks (songs from the Irish and Yiddish traditions developed together with Susan McKeown), Voices of Ashkenaz (German-Jewish song connections explored by Andreas Schmitges, Deborah Strauss, Svetlana Kundish and Thomas Fritze) and Alpen Klezmer (Bavarian and Yiddish songs with Andrea Pancur and Ilya Shneyveys).…

Israeli-American violinist Yuval Waldman will be giving a solo recital of “Music Forgotten and Remembered” at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall on Tuesday March 29, 2011, at 8 PM. The program presents rarely performed gems composed by Eastern European Jews, many of whom perished during World War II or were silenced by Soviet repression.

Born in the Ukraine to Holocaust survivors and the Artistic Director of Music Bridges International, Waldman was able to rediscover these pieces by searching music libraries and obscure music collections in Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Israel. Don’t miss Jewish music from around the world: Yiddish, Cantorial, Ladino, Israeli, folk, pop, classical, jazz, tango and beat box (and magic too) in Miami, Florida.

Performed in the glorious 1926 Bertha Abess Sanctuary at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, the oldest Jewish sanctuary in continuous use in Florida. Located at 7 N13.E. 19th Street, the Temple is in Miami’s vibrant urban center, five blocks north from the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and near the Wynwood Arts District, Midtown, and the Design District.

Navigating the Bible II

Thanks to ORT, there is the Online Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutor. The entire Torah, and Haftorah sections, verse by verse, are available online with sound files, Hebrew with trop, and Hebrew text as it appears in a tikkun to practice. The English translation and transliteration appear next to each text. The site is also divided by traditional reading sections of the Jewish Torah service and cycle. A section on “singing” allows the reader to learn the trop with sound files, Western notation and highlighted Hebrew text. This is a complete site for learning to chant Torah portions.

Huberman, Bronislaw

A very thorough and complete site about the great Polish-Jewish violinist and musician, this site includes biographical materials that include scans of primary documents, letters and articles. Some amazing photos, stories and anecdotes. It includes many articles and texts about Huberman as well as excerpts from interviews. Materials about his work in Israel in the 1930’s. There’s a discography and a bibliography. Part of the biographical materials come from Huberman’s secretary. Giacomo Meyerbeer

A biography of Meyerbeer, (born Yaakov Liebmann Beer), this website was created by his self-designated “fan club”, a group devoted to the continued recognition and performance of Meyerbeer’s works. This site is also a source for information on Halevy and Auber. What’s really great about this site for students are the links to full text articles by “contributors” of the fan club. These contributors range from professors to journalists to students. Also included is a thorough discography as well as the attachment of an historical discography.

Mauro Braunstein Nusach Database

Mauro Braunstein, a mathematician and composer, has put together a database of nusach melodies with score that he has transcribed. The database contains thousands of variations of nusach covering the gamut of Jewish liturgical texts. It is divided by liturgy (weekdays, Sabbath, holidays), life cycles, and trope. Within these sections are myriad examples of the melodies and traditions of singing for the texts. There is score set for each of these, and some links to outside sound files as well. The purpose of the site is to offer a leader or researcher musical options to sing the services. Braunstein also offers his services for transcribing recordings into sheet music of those who contact him, which many will find extremely useful. This is an excellent site as a resource for finding nusach in musical notation, although some may find some of the options given within a score somewhat confusing, most will find this very helpful.…

The Jewish Museum will present The Jewish Romantics, a concert
celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.

The November 5 program is a co-production of Mannes College, The New

Durmashkin, Henny (Gurko)

Singer. Born 1924- Died, 2002 in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. Sister of pianist Fanny Durmashkin and conductor Wolf Durmashkin. Henny was the youngest. Her grandfather, Akiva, was the cantor of Vilna s main synagogue and respected composer of liturgical music. Before the war, Henny had studied opera. She was fluent in 8 languages. Her brother, Wolf Durmashkin, had been prominent in Vilna’s cultural, conducting the Vilna Philharmonic, prior to the ghetto life during WWII. In the ghetto, he directed a Hebrew choir and an orchestra in the ghetto. According to Barbara Durmashkin, Wolf perished at the age of 30, on Sept. 19, 1944. He was shot an hour before liberation of the Klooga concentration camp. During its 15 months in existence, the Ghetto orchestra performed 35 chamber and symphonic concerts.

USDAN CENTER ANNOUNCES 2008 FESTIVAL CONCERTS

SPECIAL JULY 17 CONCERT OF REMEMBRANCE AND CELEBRATION; 60th ANNIVERSARY OF ISRAEL,
WITH EXCERPTS FROM CHILDREN S OPERA BRUNDIBAR
Usdan Center For the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), America’s
premier summer arts day camp, will present its annual Festival Concerts, private
30-minute educational performances, just for Usdan students, at its on-site
1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, beginning Monday June 30.

A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and
Celebration; 60th Anniversary of Israel, hosted by the international concert
presenter and programmer Caroline Stoessinger. The concert will include excerpts
from Brundibar, the children s opera first performed in the Terezin concentration
camp, and since World War II, sung continually in Israel and throughout the world.
The Usdan Center Junior Chorus will perform.…

Recht, Rick

Rock star of the Reform/BBYO/Hillel movements, Rick Recht concertizes widely throughout the United States. “Recht also won the 2001 American Zionist Movement and 2000 American Jewish Festival songwriting contests.” According to his website, he has played at over 70 Jewish camps. Recht has amassed a huge following in the teen/20-something community. He has albums, “Tov”, “Shabbat Alive” and “Free to be the Jew in me” and he composes on commission for camps and Jewish venues. His website states: “His contribution to the Jewish music world marks the birth of a unique blend of pop, radio-friendly music with Hebrew, Jewish text, and social responsibility.” But there doesn’t seem to be any question of his growing popularity.

Triangle Fire an opera by Leonard Lehman in NYC

You may be interested in attending a performance of a new one-act opera, Triangle Fire, with music by Leonard Lehrman and a libretto by Ellen Frankel.  It’s being performed Saturday, March 25, 2017, at 8:00 pm – $10 suggested donation; no one turned away

at 8 PM
at New York University, Room 220, 32 Waverly Place (at the corner of University Place).

The opera, a Puffin Foundation commission, commemorates the fire that broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on March 25, 1911, killing 146 garment workers, most of them young Jewish and Italian women, recently arrived from Europe.  It was one of the worst industrial accidents in American history.

Emerging in 16th-century Prague, the klezmer became a central cultural feature of the largest transnational Jewish community of modern times. This talk and roundtable discussion celebrates the recent publication of Feldman’s book, Klezmer: Music, History and Memory (OUP, 2016), the first comprehensive study of both the musical structure and the social history of the klezmer.

Walter Zev Feldman is a leading researcher in both Ottoman Turkish and Jewish music, and a performer on the klezmer dulcimer cimbal (tsimbl).

This talk discusses how three anthems—“Ha-Tikva,” “L’Internationale,” and “Yerushalayim shel Zahav”— have helped shaped Israeli society, analyzing these songs as performances of collectivity representing the multifaceted nature of Zionism and the shifting political landscape in Israel.

Michael A. Figueroa is an ethnomusicologist whose work resides at the intersection of music and political consciousness in Middle Eastern and African American contexts.

The Leo Baeck Institute and the American Society for Jewish Music are proud to present Mimi Stern Wolfe’s Downtown Music Productions in “An Erwin Schulhoff Retrospective,” a concert of chamber works by Schulhoff, along with an academic presentation of his life and musical legacy, May 25th, 7:00 PM, at the Center for Jewish History at 15 West 16th street. The prolific Schulhoff, a Jewish composer born in Prague, perished in a concentration camp at Wurzberg, Bavaria in 1942.
