The Amernet String Quartet will perform “Music of the Jewish Diaspora” including four of Joseph Achron’s string quartets: “Scher”, “Mi Chomocho”, “Lullaby”, and “Stimmung”. These works were never published until recently — the Amernet will use advance copies of the Achron Society’s forthcoming edition of Achron’s music. The program will also include works of Shostakovich, Zhitomirski, Weinberg, Grunfeld and Haas.

Members of the String Quartet include:
Misha Viteson, violin; Marcia Littley, violin; Michael Klotz, viola and Jason Calloway, cello.

Neshama Carlebach Sings Hatikvah with Inclusive Lyrics

Where but YouTube would you be able to hear a new version of a national anthem? The Forward newspaper asked Neshama Carlebach to sing Hatikvah, but not just any recording. The article was suggesting some new lyrics that could potentially be more inclusive to all Israelis of whatever creed, color or religion in a democratic society. This proposed change is not just for Arabs (not Palestinians, but Israeli Arabs), but also may resonate with other minorities now living in Israel including Christians, Bahai, Druze, Buddhists and peoples of other faiths and ethnic groups.

Neshama Carlebach, daughter of the late Shlomo Carlebach, took up the idea and has released a YouTube video with the suggested new and “old”-er texts. Of course the lyrics of this song “Hatikvah” have been changed before, and also those other famous Jewish songs, such as “Jerusalem of Gold.” Each time, these changes have come about due to changes in historic circumstances.…

You can use the site to learn the Tefillot, and it is completely free. Most of the Siddur has

Chamber Music at Rodeph Sholom Presents Sephardic Melody

On February 2 at 1pm, in Schnurmacher Chapel, Chamber Music at Rodeph
Sholom will celebrate Sephardic Melody, a rich cultural heritage
expressed both in contemporary music and traditional, which blends
influences from the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, Turkey, Greece,

CANTORS AND CHOIRS BRING ON THE LIGHT AT RODEPH SHOLOM’S CHANUKAH EXTRAVAGANZA
The Cantors and Choirs of Congregation Rodeph Sholom will
celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, during Shabbat services at 6 PM on
Friday, December 9, 2011. The unique, intergenerational service will feature Cantor
Rebecca Garfein, Cantor Shayna De Lowe, and the volunteer adult and children’s
choirs from the synagogue. This year, the first night of Chanukah is Tuesday,
December 20, 2011.

“Chanukah celebrates miracles and the power to overcome hardship,” according to
Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein. “For many people in
our country, this has been an especially tough year. Chanukah can help remind us
all of the everyday miracles in our lives.”

Highlights of the service will include Peter Yarrow’s “Light One Candle,” and “Bring
On the Light,” a piece by composer, singer, and actor Danny Maseng that was
commissioned by Congregation Rodeph Sholom for Chanukah in 2001.…

music. Their 2005 CD Carnival Conspiracy was Rolling Stone magazine’s #1 non-English
recording. This concert will feature joyous Jewish-Gypsy-Balkan-jazz party sounds

Tziona Achishena provided this autobiographical sketch: “Tziona’s Achishena’s rich and soulful voice weaves its way through her new disc, “Miriam’s Drum”, created in collaboration with percussionist Shani Ben Canar. The album features original melodies to ancient Hebrew prayers “received” through her intuitive musicianship, and enlivened by world class percussion, transcendent harmonies, and inspired vocal improvisation. The album’s release marks the culmination of years of musical and spiritual searching. Interestingly, this process began, not through music training, but through dance. From early childhood to her first years in college at Berkeley, Tziona spent much of her time in the dance studio, studying all the major western dance forms from Ballet to Modern dance. The Jewish Museum will present The Jewish Romantics, a concert
celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.

The November 5 program is a co-production of Mannes College, The New
School for Music, and The Jewish Museum.…

The lesson was written by Writer/Educator Danny Zeldin and is geared for High School students, although educators of all types are welcome to participate in the webinar. Rabbi Ethan Linden (Shir Chadash synagogue in New Orleans) will present the lesson and demonstrate how this powerful song can be used as a teaching tool in the classroom. Symphony No. 4 Homage in memory of the Holocaust

The 24th. of January 2008, at 9, PM , there will be a premiere
performance of Alfono Rega,’s Symphony n°4 in 6 movements written
as a homage in memory of the Holocaust. This event will take place at the Conservatory of Milan contemporaneously with the inauguration of the Holocaust Museum situated in the railway station. of Milan, Italy.

The concert is free. It will be on behalf of the Associazione Luciano Elmo
Onlus in memory of Luciano Elmo, who was a Lawyer, sent in
concentration camp and the only survivor of his group.
He is recalled for having save a great number of Jews, and received military decorations several times.

The Symphony The Holocaust brings back to present days tonal and romantic
music, has been recorded some weeks ago in Milan and will be performed by the
Cantelli Orchestra, one of the most famous Orchestra of Milan, together with the
Costanzo Porta Choir of Cremona.…

Along with the documentary made by Roberta Grossman and Marta Kaufman that aired on PBS in 2010, there have been a few historical collections putting up materials about Hava Nagila, the ubiquitous folk tune that has become part and parcel of the American Jewish experience. For years, the song text was attributed to Moshe Nathanson, but this claim turned out to be untrue. Later in life, Nathanson wrote to Idelsohn and apologized about accepting credit for the text, which Idelsohn had written.…

It seems an impossibility: in Nazi-occupied Denmark in the 1940s, one of the hottest jazz orchestras around was the interracial Harlem Kiddies, with two white and three black band members – and a Jewish singer in front. The story of how the band came to be so popular is one that uncovers the great role that jazz and race played in the occupied territories during the Second World War.

Several factors contributed to the social and political atmosphere that enabled their success. In the occupied territories in the Second World War, Denmark was known as the Sahnefront – the cream front – due to the co-operative government and the relative leniency of the occupying forces.…

Kol Simcha, a Swiss ensemble formed in 1986, plays an assortment of klezmer styles from traditional to “contemporary.” The website provides an up-to-date schedule, including venues in Switzerland, Germany, France and Norway. The biographies reveal that band members include both American and European trained musicians. Four CDs are featured with playlists and sound snippets. The newer website features news, movies and videos online, as well as all their sponsors and managers all over Europe.

A Jewish community site from Trondheim, Norway dedicated to the “private, non-profit, non-denominational resource site for Jewish religion and culture with the primary focus on Western Sephardic traditions, mainly the Spanish and Portuguese traditions of NW Europe and the Americas, and a secondary focus on Litvak, Hamburg and Scandinavian Ashkenazi traditions.” In the music section, which is in Norwegian, there is a history of Sephardic music, along with online scores of various pieces and samples of music from Emanuel Aguilar and the Rev. D.A. de Sola’s Talelé zimrá(Sephardi melodies : being the traditional liturgical chants of the Spanish & Portuguese Jews Congregation, London. These are interesting samples of music that may not be as familiar to Americans.
