Tziona Achishena provided this autobiographical sketch: “Tziona’s Achishena’s rich and soulful voice weaves its way through her new disc, “Miriam’s Drum”, created in collaboration with percussionist Shani Ben Canar. The album features original melodies to ancient Hebrew prayers “received” through her intuitive musicianship, and enlivened by world class percussion, transcendent harmonies, and inspired vocal improvisation. The album’s release marks the culmination of years of musical and spiritual searching. Interestingly, this process began, not through music training, but through dance. From early childhood to her first years in college at Berkeley, Tziona spent much of her time in the dance studio, studying all the major western dance forms from Ballet to Modern dance. The Cantors and Choirs of Congregation Rodeph Sholom will

Frank London‘s Klezmer Brass Band Allstars will perform a Hanukkah
concert at The Jewish Museum on Tuesday, December 27 at 7:30 pm. This band has
toured the world, bringing over the top exuberant energy to traditional Jewish roots
music. Their 2005 CD Carnival Conspiracy was Rolling Stone magazine’s #1 non-English
recording. This concert will feature joyous Jewish-Gypsy-Balkan-jazz party sounds
as well as favorite Hanukkah songs in new arrangements. Members of the band are

Presidents’ Day weekend.
The Southwest’s annual celebration
of Klezmer music and dance, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008, will present a weekend of concerts,

The Jewish Museum will present The Jewish Romantics, a concert
celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.
The November 5 program is a co-production of Mannes College, The New

KLEZSHOP – A unique New York based trio, playing their original compositions, all
with a special Jewish-Klezmer flavor. Its members, natives of Israel,
graduates of the Juilliard School, the Paris Conservatory and the Jerusalem Academy,
combine their classical education with a rich experience of performing Jewish music,
Along with the documentary made by Roberta Grossman and Marta Kaufman that aired on PBS in 2010, there have been a few historical collections putting up materials about Hava Nagila, the ubiquitous folk tune that has become part and parcel of the American Jewish experience. The Jewish Music Forum of the American Society of Jewish Music will present rare evening event, on Thursday, February 9th at 7 PM. Because these evenings have been so popular, you will need to make reservations to attend (see information below).
The topic is “The Music of Leo Zeitlin,” one of the composers of the St. Petersburg School from the early 20th Century.
