The Ninth Annual Washington Jewish Music Festival celebrates and explores the wide
spectrum of sounds and traditions that make up Jewish music. Throughout a nine-day
festival, audiences will be able to hear a wide range of styles and influences that
make up the richness of Jewish music. The Festival will feature David Buchbinder’s
Odessa/Havana, an exciting Jewish-Cuban musical fusion; the Afro-Semitic Experience,
showcasing the musical traditions of both Jewish and African diasporas; Beyond The
Pale, presenting new klezmer music, fused with folk and roots; the silent film The
Golem set to live music performed by Davka; the Sisters of Sheynville who swing in

The work, which was awarded the Foundation for Jewish Culture’s 2012 New Jewish Music Network commission, is currently touring the U.S. and Canada. Next stop: as part of a Music of Remembrance concert at Benaroya Hall, Seattle. Melodia’s spring concert Awakening the Spirit will feature the U.S. Premiere of John Rutter’s new work “Visions,” a powerful work that examines the spiritual, religious, and historic importance of Jerusalem as a symbol of “a utopian ideal of heavenly peace and seraphic bliss for redeemed humanity” in four movements.
The violin soloist performing this piece is the wonderful Areta Zhulla, an award-winning young artist who works and trains with Itzhak Perlman. Lazer Lloyd, who grew up in Connecticut, (not too far from here) playing blues guitar, now lives in Israel. Well, the distances he’s traveled in miles don’t compare to distances he’s traveled in life, but he hasn’t lost his interest in playing guitar, especially blues guitar,… except that now, he applies this music to Jewish themes. His band, The Folk Spirit Blues have released a new CD, Higher Ground. Lloyd writes and sings his own material. The World Premiere performance of Meira Warshauer’s Symphony No. 1 –
“Living, Breathing Earth” will be given by the South Carolina
Philharmonic, Nicholas Smith, Music Director, at 7 PM on Saturday, March
24, 2007 as part of their Master Series 7 concert at the Koger Center

David Berkeley will appear at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA on Feb. 1 at 8pm, Joe’s Pub in New York on Feb. 2 and The Tin Angel in Philadelphia on the 3rd.
Berkeley is an American singer-songwriter, with a voice compared by The New York Times as “lustrous, melancholy voice with shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake.” He’s is a Harvard University graduate about whom Hillary Meister wrote in the Atlanta Jewish Times on January 2, 2004, is influenced by synagogue services, and that in particular,” a cantor with a beautiful voice “kept me going to synagogue” while growing up in New Jersey” He has several CDs, including Live from the Fez (2005), After the Wrecking Ships (2004), The Confluence (2002). The Confluence, was reviewed in
Billboard magazine and Rollingstone which called him
a “Sixties-esque troubadour with songs to swoon by and a voice sweeter than
incense and peppermints.” Berkeley reported to Meister a couple of years ago that the music coming out of silent prayer was always the most powerful for him.…

People Sing Festival – A four part Celebration of Spirit and Song’ from
April 5-12, coinciding with the Jewish festival of Passover.
“For four years, Let My People Sing has brought together an inspired group
of artists from around the world to celebrate the human spirit – now more
than ever, we need something to sing about” said Taubman. “I am
particularly pleased that this year’s events will raise awareness and money
for the Jewish Family Service Food and Hunger programs”.
Led by Matthew Lazar, Founding Director and Conductor, and Beth Robin, Pianist/Accompanist, the chorus performs sacred and secular music in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino. SHIRAH was formed in January, 1995 as a regional chorus specializing in the performance of the full spectrum of Jewish music. Its roster includes a multigenerational blend of amateur and professiional singers from the northern New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. CNN reported that one of the victims of Continental Airlines Flight 3407 that crashed in Buffalo last Thursday was Cantor Susan Wehle. Brooklyn native Cantor Wehle was a cantor at Temple Beth Am in Williamsville, New York since November of 2002. She had also sung as a cantorial soloist at Temple Sinai in Amherst, New York. The cantor received her Cantorial Smicha from Aleph – the Movement for Jewish Renewal. Additionally she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and in Judaic Studies, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Acting. She performed with theatre companies in Buffalo, Chicago and New York City. Her parents were Holocaust survivors. Cantor Wehle was 55. She had released a CD called “Songs of Hope and Healing.” Temple Beth Am synagogue has established at guest book for those who wish to remember the cantor.…

As the State of Israel approaches the sixtieth anniversary
of its founding in the spring of 2008, academic scholarship
continues to
focus primarily on its political life, religious and ethnic diversity,
and foreign policy. Much less attention has been devoted to the
cultural
life of Israeli society and its impact on evolving Israeli identities
across generations. One of the most dynamic yet least studied
spheres of
Israeli culture to emerge in the six decades since statehood is its
music, ranging from the worlds of pop music, rock, rap, and
/musikah
mizrahit /to classical, religious, and ethnic traditions.
To
examine
these questions, the University of Virginia will host an historic
international conference on Israeli music on April 13 and 14,

The European Cantors Association is delighted to announce the next European Cantors Convention.
It will take place in London, at Central Synagogue, from Monday 17 to Thursday 20 June 2013, followed by a Shabbaton 21/22 June. The convention will open with a concert on Monday 17 June.
The Guest cantors will be the incredible composer, practitioner and educator Sol Zim from New York, and the outstanding teacher / practitioner who proved so excellent and popular last year Yehezkel Klang from Israel.
This convention is for practicing prayer leaders of all backgrounds, for choirmasters and choristers and for congregants – and for anyone interested in the music of the synagogue. The subject will be Shabbat Unwrapped: We will be working in small groups with our guest teachers to uncover everything you need to know about the music of Shabbat services.…

Participants and observers will learn about the historical background and
cultural context of this Jewish music and the associated dances. They will
then have the opportunity to gain hands-on (or feet-on!) experience,
choosing either to study the music (style, ornamentation, accompaniment) in
more depth, or to learn some of the dances with experienced dance leader and
drummer Guy Schalom, with live music from members of the band. No previous
knowledge of klezmer music or dance required. Instrumentalists should be
grade 4 equivalent or above.
