Toronto Jewish Folk Choir at Ashkenaz

The Toronto Jewish Folk Choir is performing Sunday, September 3, 1 p.m. in the Brigantine Room at the Ashkenaz festival in Toronto. Free admission.
This will be the second performance of In Amerike, for choir and klezmer band by Sid Robinovitch – a terrific piece that was a big hit at its premiere in June. Beyond the Pale is joining the choir, and Sid is coming in from Winnipeg to play the piano part. Toronto Jewish Folk Choir also doing a few other numbers, including a choral version of the beautiful lullabye, Rozhinkes mit mandlen (Raisins and Almonds). Alexander Veprinsky will conduct the concert, including excerpts from a medley he created for our 80th anniversary concert.

includes a special parallel strand for professional klezmer players as well as the
parallel Song School. KlezFest is preceded by a fantastic one-week Yiddish course ideal

Celebrating the centennial of Russia’s leading 20th century composer,
The Jewish Music Commission of Los Angeles (JMCLA) presents a free
community concert. Featuring special guest Joseph Dorfman, concert
pianist, composer, and Shostakovich scholar at Buchman-Mehta School of
Music (Tel Aviv University), the concert will showcase performances by
Barry Gold (cello), Mark Kashper (violin), David Kasap (accordion), Hila
Plitmann (soprano), Alma Mora (mezzo-soprano), Mark Saltzman (tenor) and Neal Brostoff (piano). Dorfman will perform his “Trio, in Memoriam
Dimitri Shostakovich” (1976). Shostakovich’s “From Jewish Folk Poetry,”

A World-Jazz Extravaganza is coming to The Tank on March 16, 2006 at
10pm, featuring Aaron Alexander’s Midrash Mish Mosh and Senegalese
Sabar drum masters Yakar Rhythms, featuring Aliounne ‘Guido’ Faye.
Special guest on Midrash Mish Mosh is drummer David Licht from the
Klezmatics! Both bands will play separately and then collaborate on a
couple tunes at the end. Alexander previously produced and a
collaboration with Yakar rhythms and Hasidic New Wave which resulted in

SOAS University of LondonThe Music Department runs BA, MMus and PhD degree programmes; all focus on world music, with the opportunity to specialize in regional traditions including Jewish musics, and to receive high-level training in performance. In the BA, Music can be combined with language studies, Development Studies, Anthropology and many other academic disciplines, while PhD projects can be practice-led, fieldwork-based, or theoretical.

crossover ensemble in a new program which premiere’s pianist/composer
Ted Rosenthal’s recent chamber jazz composition, Theme, Moods and
Angles for flute, cello and Jazz Trio, on Friday evening, May 30th,
at 8pm in Schnurmacher Chapel. The guest ensemble, Ted Rosenthal, piano,
Cantor Rebecca Garfein, vocals, Susan Rotholz, flute, Eliot Bailen,
cello and Artistic Director, Thomson Kneeland, bass, and Chris
Parker, drums, will play works by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1922) and
Pablo Ziegler (1944-), Hector Villa-Lobos (1887-1959), Benny Carter

& ISRAEL’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY IN ITS 82nd SPRING CONCERT JUNE 1

A Yiddish work celebrating the joy of playing the fiddle, and a salute
in song to the State of Israel on its 60th anniversary highlight the
82nd annual spring concert of the Toronto Jewish Folk Choir. Canada’s
oldest continuing choral body performs Sunday, June 1, 2008, 2 p.m. at
the Leah Posluns Theatre, 4588 Bathurst St., Toronto.Alexander Veprinsky
conducts the 30-voice Choir.

CHOIRS AND CANTORS BRING ON THE LIGHT THIS CHANUKAH

Over 200 adults and children will celebrate Chanukah,
the Festival of Lights, in concert, 3 P.M., Sunday, December 14, 2008 as
Congregation Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan hosts its unique, multigenerational Festival
of Choirs. The ninth annual concert will feature cantors and their volunteer adult
and children’s choirs from all over the New York metropolitan area. This year, the
first night of Chanukah is Sunday, December 21, 2008.

“There is nothing as special as seeing the young and the young-at-heart join
together in song to celebrate the festival of Chanukah,” according to Congregation
Rodeph Sholom’s Senior Cantor, Rebecca Garfein. “We are thrilled to present the
ninth annual Festival of Choirs to the New York community.”

Highlights of the concert will include the multigenerational 200-voiced combined
choir singing an arrangement of Peter Yarrow’s song (of Peter Paul and Mary
fame),“Light One Candle,” and the concert’s finale, “Bring on the Light,” a piece
by composer, singer and actor, Danny Maseng, that was commissioned by Congregation
Rodeph Sholom for the Festival of Choirs in 2001.…
