On Saturday, September 13, will be playing as part of the inaugural “Arts in the Park” festival in the Sudbrook Park neighborhood of Pikesville, MD. The festival, which will feature live music, arts, and crafts, will take place at the Sudbrook Stream Valley Park. It’s free. This presentation addresses three anthems that have helped shape Israeli society: “Ha-Tikva,” “L’Internationale,” and “Yerushalayim shel Zahav.” In light of three ideological facets represented by these songs—liberation, solidarity, and territoriality—Dr. Figueroa will discuss what constitutes an anthem in Jewish and Israeli history, theorizing a mode of performance he calls the “declamatory style,” in which vocal gestures that blur the distinction between speech and song portend the political value of musical performance.

JTS will host a performance of excerpts and discussion of two important new operas: As One (music by Laura Kaminsky, libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed), following a transgender woman’s journey to self-acceptance. The other is Steal a Pencil for Me (music by H. L. Miller Cantorial School Assistant Professor Gerald Cohen, libretto by Deborah Brevoort), the story of a real-life couple who fell in love while imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. Following the performance, the two composers, Laura Kaminsky and Gerald Cohen, will discuss their operas’ creation. Cantor Nancy Abramson, director of H. L. Miller Cantorial School, will moderate the discussion.

Neshama Carlebach Sings Hatikvah with Inclusive Lyrics

Where but YouTube would you be able to hear a new version of a national anthem? The Forward newspaper asked Neshama Carlebach to sing Hatikvah, but not just any recording. The article was suggesting some new lyrics that could potentially be more inclusive to all Israelis of whatever creed, color or religion in a democratic society. This proposed change is not just for Arabs (not Palestinians, but Israeli Arabs), but also may resonate with other minorities now living in Israel including Christians, Bahai, Druze, Buddhists and peoples of other faiths and ethnic groups.

Neshama Carlebach, daughter of the late Shlomo Carlebach, took up the idea and has released a YouTube video with the suggested new and “old”-er texts. Of course the lyrics of this song “Hatikvah” have been changed before, and also those other famous Jewish songs, such as “Jerusalem of Gold.” Each time, these changes have come about due to changes in historic circumstances.…

Yiddish Translation Project Reported

The C & RL News, of the Association of College and Research Libraries Reports in the February 2013 issue that two archival repositories have a new innovative project to create translations from historic Yiddish newspapers and journals. The Kheel Center for Labor-Management Documentation and Archives at Cornell University and the Modern Records Centre at the University of Warwick in the UK are jointly digitizing more than 1500 pages from Yiddish newspapers and journals. These papers are from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and were originally written for working-class Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe.

The project will translate publications such as The Ladies’ Garment Worker. The project is looking for volunteers to translate the documents from Yiddish to English. People can help by participating in the project.…

Remembering the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April 19, 1943
An Evening of Songs and Testimonies from Letters, Diaries and Memoirs.

In October 1942 the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto was ordered. In January 1943 armed resistance to the deportations began forcing their suspension. On April 19, 1943, the Germans ordered Ukrainian auxiliaries to reenter the ghetto to round up the remaining Jews. The Jews managed to resist the assault for three weeks. On May 8 the fighters were killed, the remaining Jews deported to killing centers. The Warsaw ghetto with its 400,000 Jews was liquidated.

We are commemorating the courage and endurance of the Jews of Warsaw in an evening that features Yiddish songs and diary entries composed in the ghetto as well as letters and accounts written outside the ghetto by distressed Polish and German witnesses to the destruction.…

arrangement of a Yiddish theater work.

Joseph Rumshinsky’s 1923 musical comedy, Di goldene kale (The Golden
Bride) was a work carefully designed to both move and entertain its specialized
American audience: Yiddish-speaking immigrants from Eastern Europe and
their families. With pathos (the basic ingredient), love, “Jewish-style”
music, a ritual kiddush, acts set in a shtetl and in America, a shadchen, a
lullaby that slips into Russian, assimilated Jews speaking broken Yiddish, a
paean to America, as well as other compelling features, it offered its

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society to celebrate 20th anniversary

The Sydney Jewish Choral Society celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, 2006. Under the direction of Rose Grausman, this mixed choir performs a very wide range of
music, including classical, opera, jazz and musicals, as well as popular and folk music from all over the world. The S.J.C.S. regularly performs Yiddish, Ladino and Hebrew folk music, Hebrew liturgical settings, and stunning Hebrew musical settings

Beyond the Pale is joining the choir, and Sid is coming in from Winnipeg to play the piano part. Toronto Jewish Folk Choir also doing a few other numbers, including a choral version of the beautiful lullabye, Rozhinkes mit mandlen (Raisins and Almonds). Alexander Veprinsky will conduct the concert, including excerpts from a medley he created for our 80th anniversary concert.

Celebrating the centennial of Russia’s leading 20th century composer,
The Jewish Music Commission of Los Angeles (JMCLA) presents a free
community concert. Featuring special guest Joseph Dorfman, concert
pianist, composer, and Shostakovich scholar at Buchman-Mehta School of
Music (Tel Aviv University), the concert will showcase performances by
Barry Gold (cello), Mark Kashper (violin), David Kasap (accordion), Hila
Plitmann (soprano), Alma Mora (mezzo-soprano), Mark Saltzman (tenor) and Neal Brostoff (piano). Dorfman will perform his “Trio, in Memoriam
Dimitri Shostakovich” (1976). Shostakovich’s “From Jewish Folk Poetry,”
op. 79 (1948), written at the height of Soviet cultural repression and
featuring Russian translations of Yiddish folk poetry, will also be
performed.…

Hands-On Workshop
– Study with an internationally recognized master instructor
– Learn tunes from the diverse klezmer tradition
– Work in ensembles with other instrumentalists
– Develop tools for improvisation
– Guest instructors from the cutting edge of the contemporary klezmer
scene
– Open to players of any instrument who play and read music at least
an intermediate level.

The open house and all sessions will take place at the Workmen’s Circle, 45
East 33rd Street (between Park and Madison), Manhattan.

Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson Concert on Israel Radio and in Jerusalem

A concert of the Yiddish and Hebrew art songs of Arie Ben Erez Abrahamson will be performed as part of the Etnachta series of classic music organized by Hayuta Dvir. It will be broadcast live on Kol HaMusica by the Israel Broadcasting Authority from the Henry Crown Symphony Hall in Jerusalem, 20 David Marcus St.(Located near the corner of Chopin, in the Rehavia District near the president’s house) The concert and broadcast are scheduled for April 16, 2007 at 5:00 pm.
