On Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 7:30pm, the Woodland Concert Series will be presenting an important musical and cultural offering to the Hartford area. Featured will be mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter in a program of music composed by Jewish composers during their imprisonment at Theresienstadt, a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. She is being assisted in this concert by the noted violinist Daniel Hope, and by her regular accompanist, Bengt Forsberg.
Tickets are $30 general admission, $20 for seniors or students and $40 for preferred seating. Oxford University Press has released the scholarly work of Dr. Tina Fruhauf, The Organ and Its Music in German-Jewish Culture. The press descriptions states that the book “examines the powerful but often overlooked presence of the organ in synagogue music and the musical life of German-speaking Jewish communities. Tina Frühauf expertly chronicles the history of the organ in Jewish culture from the earliest references in the Talmud through the 19th century, when it had established a firm and lasting presence in Jewish sacred and secular spaces in central Europe. Frühauf demonstrates how the introduction of the organ into German synagogues was part of the significant changes which took place in Judaism after the Enlightenment, and posits the organ as a symbol of the division of the Jewish community into Orthodox and Reform congregations.…

He is joined by two prominent members of the Cantors Assembly, Alberto Mizrahi and Aaron Bensoussan, who serve congregations in Chicago and Toronto, respectively. Mezzo-soprano. Born in Germany to Argentinian parents in 1973. Grew up in Venezuela. She played and sang with her musical family Latin American folk music. She formally studied singing and choral conducting in Buenos Aires, and completed her training at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. Her repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to the avant-garde and from folk to tango, including oratorio, opera, and works written especially for her. Since 1999, she conceived and produced programs on Latin American and European 20th Century music, Yiddish song, cabaret and tango. She also performed in renowned venues in Buenos Aires and Europe. German-American. Soprano. First known woman cantor, in San Francisco, during the years between 1884-1893, the only currently known example of a nineteenth century woman cantor in America. Born on March 7, 1847 in Stuttgart the daughter of Moritz Eichberg (1806-1892), a cantor of Stuttgart for many years, and Eleanor Seligsberg Eichberg (1811-1881). Julie studied music at the Stuttgart Conservatorium. At age 17, Julie came to America, joining her sister, Mrs. Pauline Weiller, a piano teacher, in Baltimore in 1864. In 1866, she married Jacob H. Rosewald, a violinist and conductor. She and her husband participated widely in Jewish community musical activities in Baltimore. She decided to further her musical studies in Europe in 1870. She began singing opera professionally in America in 1875 with the Kellogg English Opera Company.…

will be highlighted at the “Cantors’ Cabaret” concert at 7p.m.,

Joining Rodeph Sholom’s Cantor Rebecca Garfein and Cantorial
Intern, Jennifer Strauss-Klein are New York Metro Area Cantors, Claire Franco,

light-hearted tribute to the Broadway theatre will benefit the School of Sacred
Music Scholarship Fund at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and

To date, Project Kehila has contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the hard-hit
Gulf community.

How could beautiful music be produced by an orchestra surrounded by illness and death, starvation and cold, immense suffering, hatred and loss? Yet, participation in this orchestra was likely the source of salvation for the “orchestra girls.” This concert will give voice to their experiences and, in so doing, remember not only those who survived, but also those who perished.…

Steal a Pencil for Me and More in NY

JTS will host a performance of excerpts and discussion of two important new operas: As One (music by Laura Kaminsky, libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed), following a transgender woman’s journey to self-acceptance. The other is Steal a Pencil for Me (music by H. L. Miller Cantorial School Assistant Professor Gerald Cohen, libretto by Deborah Brevoort), the story of a real-life couple who fell in love while imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps. Following the performance, the two composers, Laura Kaminsky and Gerald Cohen, will discuss their operas’ creation. Cantor Nancy Abramson, director of H. L. Miller Cantorial School, will moderate the discussion.

Yiddish operetta “Di Goldene Kale (The Golden Bride)” at Rutgers August 5
August 5 2015 at 7pm at Rutgers University in New Jersey will be the first orchestrated performance in 70 years of the Operetta “di Goldene Kale” The Golden Bride with music by Joseph Rumshinsky. This performance will showcase the reconstruction of the operetta by Michael Ochs, a scholar and librarian who worked at Harvard and found the manuscript there 35 years ago. Di Goldene Kale became a smash hit for Rumshinsky who wrote beautiful romantic melodies. Zalman Mlotek of the Folksbiene National Yiddish Theater in NYC will conduct. A company of singers from New York City’s National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene, accompanied by the Mason Gross Muzikers orchestra, will perform the operetta. For full details and to get tickets:

Isle of Klezbos Performs at Jewish Museum SummerNights Series
The all women’s klezmer sextet, ISLE OF KLEZBOS, will perform at the Jewish Museum’s “SummerNights” Series on Thursday, July 25 2013 as the final concert. Isle of Klezbos plays imaginative versions of eclectic Eastern European-rooted Jewish folk music, Yiddish swing and tango.
This event also includes an open bar with wine and light refreshments.
Doors open at 7pm, and the concert begins at 7:30pm.

Trio. Playing a unique blend of klezmer, rock, folk, and jazz. Statman has worked
