Israelis Stanislava Varshavsky and Diana Shapiro won Second place in Dec, 2005, at the 10th Dranoff International Two Piano Competition, held in Miami, Florida. Competing against the top piano duos in the world, the Israelis finished second with the pianists from Japan, Kuni Seo and Shin-ichiro Kato finishing first place Gold Medal. The Murray Dranoff Foundation was created in 1987 by Loretta Dranoff as a tribute to her late husband with whom she performed as an internationally recognized two piano team. The second prize, the Silver Medal comes with a $15,000 award. Another Israeli, Michael Tsalka from Tel Aviv finished 9th place with partner Katarzyna Marzec-Salwinski from Krakow, Poland.
Varshavski and Shapiro started playing together as a duo in 1998. In 2004 they won The Grand Prize at the 15th Piano Competition in Rome for duo piano and 1st prize for piano four hands.… CONTINUE READING >

David Berkeley will appear at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA on Feb. 1 at 8pm, Joe’s Pub in New York on Feb. 2 and The Tin Angel in Philadelphia on the 3rd.
Berkeley is an American singer-songwriter, with a voice compared by The New York Times as “lustrous, melancholy voice with shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake.” He’s is a Harvard University graduate about whom Hillary Meister wrote in the Atlanta Jewish Times on January 2, 2004, is influenced by synagogue services, and that in particular,” a cantor with a beautiful voice “kept me going to synagogue” while growing up in New Jersey” He has several CDs, including Live from the Fez (2005), After the Wrecking Ships (2004),The Confluence (2002). The Confluence, was reviewed in Billboard magazine and Rollingstone which called him
a “Sixties-esque troubadour with songs to swoon by and a voice sweeter than

Breathing Earth by Western Piedmont Symphony of North Carolina was a great

Focused on creating accessible music that would be “timeless and well-received by people of all ages.” She wrote, arranged or orchestrated more than 400 songs — many of which have been performed by famous Jewish musicians. Her daughter Florence Nelson told the Miami Herald “She knew that much of what she wrote would be possible for cantors, choirs and children to sing,… She wanted to keep the music of Judaism alive.” Ida frequently accompanied her husband and other cantors for recitals and concerts. Mazel and Schlimazel is an all-original musical adaptation of a folkloric children’s tale of Yiddish/Jewish origin. Lorie and her band of spirited Klezmer musicians provide live music to this classic tale while it is presented, full of humour, suspense and surprise, by an expert storyteller.
The spirits of good luck and bad luck are at it again; only this time, the life of Tam, a young peasant lad, is on the line. Led by Matthew Lazar, Founding Director and Conductor, and Beth Robin, Pianist/Accompanist, the chorus performs sacred and secular music in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Ladino. SHIRAH was formed in January, 1995 as a regional chorus specializing in the performance of the full spectrum of Jewish music. Its roster includes a multigenerational blend of amateur and professiional singers from the northern New Jersey/New York metropolitan area. ROSSI, MADAMAEUROPA DE’, highly accomplished professional singer in the court of the Gonzaga family in late 16th and early 17th century Mantua. The sister of the composer and musician Salamone De’ *Rossi , she was the daughter of Bonaiuto De’ Rossi and the wife of the prominent Jewish community leader David ben Elisha, whose last name was also De’ Rossi. MadamaEuropa had two sons, Bonaiuto (Azaria), who became a prominent Jewish leader and educator, and Angelo (Mordechai), who became a court lutanist in Turin and a banker. Madama Europa’s grandsons also served as skilled court musicians and bankers in Turin.
Madama Europa’s musical activities in Mantua are known through court salary records and letters from audience attendees. In one document of 1592–93 she is listed as “Europa di Rossi,” along with a group of other musicians, including Claudio Monteverdi.

Writing a popular book about a popular song should merit some attention, so it’s not surprising that no less than four items appeared in The New York Times about this book. It’s supposed to be a book about one song. But, of course, it isn’t really. It’s a book about acculturation, assimilation and cultural impact. For readers of the Jewish Music WebCenter, these issues raised by White Christmas, may ultimately deal out the moral: we have only ourselves to “blame” –or– “congratulate” –as the view may be.

Dances by “Terezín” Jewish composer Zikmund Schul (1916 – 1944); Composition for Two
Cellos by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů (1890 – 1959; Duo by “Terezín” Jewish

Lights Celebrate Hanukkah Live in Concert is a high-definition special feature on PBS with a distinguished, diverse and dynamic ensemble of musical performers in celebration of the Jewish Festival of Lights.
