Tziona Achishena provided this autobiographical sketch: “Tziona’s Achishena’s rich and soulful voice weaves its way through her new disc, “Miriam’s Drum”, created in collaboration with percussionist Shani Ben Canar. The album features original melodies to ancient Hebrew prayers “received” through her intuitive musicianship, and enlivened by world class percussion, transcendent harmonies, and inspired vocal improvisation. Warsaw, Poland–The Grand Opening of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews will take place on October 28, 2014. At this time, the 8-gallery Core Exhibition, presenting 1,000 years of Jewish life in Poland, will be unveiled to the public. This announcement follows closely on that of the appointment of the new Museum director, Dr. Dariusz Stola, who begins his position on March 1.
Even before its Grand Opening, the Museum has received accolades. The New York Times named the Museum’s Core Exhibition the one to watch in its “Great Expectations 2014” list. The Architectural Record featured the Museum building in its Design Vanguard 2013 issue.
The Museum held its soft opening on the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on April 19, 2013, and has since received more than 200,000 visitors.…

WLAD MARHULETS is the inaugural winner of Azrieli Prize in Jewish Music
The Azrieli Music Project (AMP), a Canadian philanthropic organization, announced that composer Wlad Marhulets is the winner of the inaugural Azrieli Prize in Jewish Music for his Klezmer Clarinet Concerto. Marhulets, who submitted a completed orchestral work on a Jewish theme or subject – along with applicants from around the world – has been granted the second of two $50,000 prizes, which were offered for the first time by the Azrieli Foundation. In September 2015, the Azrieli Music Project announced that Brian Current was the winner of the inaugural Azrieli Commissioning Competition for Canadian composers. Neshama Carlebach Sings Hatikvah with Inclusive Lyrics
Where but YouTube would you be able to hear a new version of a national anthem? The Forward newspaper asked Neshama Carlebach to sing Hatikvah, but not just any recording. The article was suggesting some new lyrics that could potentially be more inclusive to all Israelis of whatever creed, color or religion in a democratic society. This proposed change is not just for Arabs (not Palestinians, but Israeli Arabs), but also may resonate with other minorities now living in Israel including Christians, Bahai, Druze, Buddhists and peoples of other faiths and ethnic groups.
Neshama Carlebach, daughter of the late Shlomo Carlebach, took up the idea and has released a YouTube video with the suggested new and “old”-er texts. Of course the lyrics of this song “Hatikvah” have been changed before, and also those other famous Jewish songs, such as “Jerusalem of Gold.” Each time, these changes have come about due to changes in historic circumstances.…

Grammy winners The Klezmatics erupted out of New York City’s East Village in 1986 and revitalized klezmer for the new century with music that is steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality, while incorporating contemporary themes such as human rights and anti-fundamentalism with eclectic and danceable musical influences including Arab, African, Latin and Balkan rhythms, jazz and punk.

celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.

Martha Haftel was born in Vienna, 25 September 1922. Died, October 6, 1985, Jamestown, NY. Singer, pianist and actress. Martha was the only daughter of Meier and Gisa Braten Haftel, who were Orthodox Jews. Her father owned a kosher restaurant in Vienna, where Martha spent her formative years before escaping Nazis in 1938. She escaped through France to England, where her father became a butler and her mother a cook. She attended a Jewish school in England. Despite being refugees, her parents were considered “enemy aliens” and so were interned by the English government on the Isle of Man . Martha chose to join her parents there. At the camp she met Engel Lund, a singer from Iceland, who inspired her to become an international singer.…

The opera, a Puffin Foundation commission, commemorates the fire that broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory on March 25, 1911, killing 146 garment workers, most of them young Jewish and Italian women, recently arrived from Europe. It was one of the worst industrial accidents in American history.

Meira Warshauer wins Miriam Gideon Prize from IAWM
Meira Warshauer‘s nice online newsletter announced that she won the Miriam Gideon Prize.
“Yishakeyni” has been honored with 1st Place in the 2004 Miriam Gideon Prize from the International Association for Women in Music. The piece is a setting of the first four verses of “Song of Songs,” the great love song of the Bible. It invites the listener into a realm of human and Divine love which transcends boundaries.

Jewish Girl Suspended from School for Singing
In the realm of “hasn’t this gone more than far enough?”, a Jewish girl was suspended from her Orthodox school for singing on a popular Israeli TV show. The Jewish Music WebCenter supports singing as a basic human right for men and women, boys and girls. Orthodox communities may need to reexamine the issue in light of the Jewish sacred texts which describe Jewish women singing and leading the people in song and dance. On October 17, the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music released the 48th CD in its pioneering recording series that documents music related to the Jewish experience in America. Titled Psalms of Joy and Sorrow, this new disc reflects the varied responses of twelve 20th- and 21st-century composers to some of the most affecting and enduring of all biblical texts-the Psalms.
