Katchko: Three Generations of Cantorial Art
Deborah Katchko-Gray announces the release of the compilaton Katchko: 3 Generations of Cantorial Art, featuring the music of Adolph Katchko, and including a CD of music sung by Cantor Katchko-Gray. The book is a combination of scholarly articles about the lives and work of Cantor Adolph Katchko (1866-1958) and CantorTheodore Katchko (1927-1997) and music. Essays on the nature of the cantorate, and transcripts of talks given by the cantors, as well as still photos from the film “The Voice of Israel”, family memorabila, letters, programs, and testimonials, all lend to the interesting archival presentation in the work. In addition to this background material, the important musical works of Adoph Katchko are presented in score with guitar chords in “female friendly” vocal ranges. These vocal arrangements by Deborah allow this music to become available to everyone, including modern female cantors who wish to sing the music of the “Golden Age” of cantors.…

NEW YORK, NY – The Jewish Museum’s popular SummerNights program returns,
presenting live world music in a concert setting on four Thursdays in
July. Each concert begins at 7:30 pm. Margot Leverett and the Klezmer
Mountain Boys, performing their unique mix of bluegrass and klezmer,
kick off SummerNights on July 2. This cosmopolitan concert series
features critically acclaimed musicians offering innovative
interpretations of music from all over the world. Other scheduled
performers include Musette Explosion with accordionist Will Holshouser
and guitarist Matt Munisteri echoing on French jazz of the 1930s and 40s
with fiery improvisations; the virtuosic brass band music of SLAVIC SOUL
PARTY!; and Ljova and the Kontraband performing a mix of
Eastern-European melodies, Latin rhythms and jazz-inspired

Suvenir Kantigas en Ladino
There are only a few albums that are wholly satisfying whether it’s the music, the vocals or accompaniment, the selection or arrangements. One new album that nicely fits the bill is the Suvenir Kantigas en Ladino recently released on CD by Betty Klein of Jerusalem. It’s simple: It’s beautiful. On much of this album are newly composed songs to newly composed Ladino poetry. Klein sings and plays variously guitar, celtic harp, piano, keyboard, accordion, bouzouki, mandolin, flute, recorder, oud, percussion, as well as writing the compositions and making the arrangements. Long-lost Mendelssohn Piece will bePerformed in Austin
Mendelssohn is have a good year in 2009. Last month in New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage held concerts of some “new” Mendelssohn works… newly rehearsed after some 100 years. This Saturday Feb 21, 2009, the Austin Civic Orchestra will perform “Fantasy and Variations for Two Pianos and Orchestra on the Gypsy March from Weber’s ‘Preziosa’ ” by Felix Mendelssohn. This will be the first time this piece has been heard since 1833. The manuscript piece, never published, and first performed by Ignaz Moscheles and Felix Mendelssohn was set aside and later owned by Anton Rubinstein. After he donated it, it was lost in the archive of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia for over a hundred years. Southwestern University professor J. Michael Cooper and Jonathan Bellman of the University of Northern Colorado, have painstakingly reconstructed the work.…

Cantor Susan Wehle in Crash near Buffalo, New York
CNN reported that one of the victims of Continental Airlines Flight 3407 that crashed in Buffalo last Thursday was Cantor Susan Wehle. Brooklyn native Cantor Wehle was a cantor at Temple Beth Am in Williamsville, New York since November of 2002. She had also sung as a cantorial soloist at Temple Sinai in Amherst, New York. The cantor received her Cantorial Smicha from Aleph – the Movement for Jewish Renewal. Additionally she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and in Judaic Studies, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Acting. She performed with theatre companies in Buffalo, Chicago and New York City. Her parents were Holocaust survivors. Cantor Wehle was 55. She had released a CD called “Songs of Hope and Healing.” Temple Beth Am synagogue has established at guest book for those who wish to remember the cantor.…

Oxford publishes Tina Fruhauf’s book on German Jewish organ music
Oxford University Press has released the scholarly work of Dr. Tina Fruhauf, The Organ and Its Music in German-Jewish Culture. The press descriptions states that the book “examines the powerful but often overlooked presence of the organ in synagogue music and the musical life of German-speaking Jewish communities. Tina Frühauf expertly chronicles the history of the organ in Jewish culture from the earliest references in the Talmud through the 19th century, when it had established a firm and lasting presence in Jewish sacred and secular spaces in central Europe. Frühauf demonstrates how the introduction of the organ into German synagogues was part of the significant changes which took place in Judaism after the Enlightenment, and posits the organ as a symbol of the division of the Jewish community into Orthodox and Reform congregations.…

Little Trees are Weeping CD
Carl Nelkin, an amateur singer and lover of Jewish music in Ireland, has released a new CD of songs of ghettos and camps in World War II. Nelkin combines Irish and Jewish sentimentalities to these songs of the Partisans and Ghetto, all sung in the original Yiddish. The booklet contains the translations into English along with the texts in Yiddish, along with some nice accompaniments. It is hoped that this type of recording should encourage other small communities of Jews to share their creative works. Carl had released his first album “Irish Heart Jewish Soul: Favourite Irish and Jewish Songs” in 2003. New Debbie Friedman CD Shacharit Prayers
Debbie Friedman has released a new CD “As You Go On Your Way: Schacharit –The Morning Prayers”. This just released CD has a combination of Debbie’s compositions and melodies to the liturgical texts of the Shacharit, the morning service. Some of the songs on the album are new, but many were composed as long ago as 1972. In a way this retrospective is a perspective piece. The “traditional” repetitions, for example are where the text is more traditional (for example, in the Amidah, the Imahot are included in the non- traditional setting.) The album helps the listener integrate the familiar tunes of Friedman with some chanting of segments of the service. Friedman states in her album “By praying we can understand how each Bracha, each blessing, helps us build a balanced and grateful life.

Important Critical Edition of Leo Zeitlin’s Music Published
As part of their series on Recent Researches in the Music of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century, AR Editions has released an important critical edition of Jewish music, the Leo Zeitlin: Chamber Music. Paula Eisenstein Baker and Robert Nelson are the editors. This is the work of many years of research and labor to bring this performance and critical score to light. This music is important to American Jewish community because Leo Zeitlin (1884-1930) was one of the significant members of the St. Petersburg Society for Jewish Folk Music group of Jewish musicians establishing a Jewish national school, who came to America. The musicans of the St. Petersburg Society brought those musical ideas both to Israel and America; that organization being the ancestor of today’s American Society of Jewish Music.…
