Peter & Ellen Allard present: Songs for a Jewish Head Start

A unique collection of 19 songs was originally written by educator Rita Gold for Head Start. Peter and Ellen Allard, along with fellow songwriters such as Peri Smilow, Josh Nelson, Shira Kline, and Fran Avni, have adapted these songs for use in Jewish early childhood education. The songs teach age-appropriate Jewish values and foster Jewish identity. All of the songs in this collection were written to help children learn the principles of fairness, decency, respect, and caring. Many of the songs were written in response to a child’s question. Other songs were created to lift the spirits of a child who is feeling hurt. Still others were composed to explain to children how they can improve our world. A CD is included.

Zamir Chorale Auditions

The Zamir Chorale of Boston, “America’s foremost Jewish choral ensemble,” will hold
auditions for all voice parts on Sunday, September 21 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at
Hebrew College, 160 Herrick Road, Newton Centre. Auditions are by appointment only
and must be scheduled in advance by emailing manager@zamir.org.

Candidates must have excellent vocal quality, the ability to sight-read music, and
previous choral experience. In addition to the audition, candidates are required
to attend open rehearsals at Hebrew College on Tuesday, September 9 and 16 from
7:15 to 10:00 p.m. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays at Hebrew College, from 7:15
to 10:00 p.m., from September through early June.

Eyal Maoz CD EdomTzadik label has released Eyal Maoz’s Edom. Eyal Maoz, a guitarist, is a composer born in Israel but based in New York City. His CD Edom is with John Medeski on organ, Shanir Blumenkranz on acoustic and electric bass and Ben Perowsky on drums. Maoz is known as a leader of the fusion-neo-klezmer group “Lemon Juice”. His ensembles performed at the Red Sea International Jazz Festival, Verizon Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, NYC Winter JazzFest and many more. Eyal was hosted at NPR WNYC ear To Ear radio program, presenting some of his music and ensembles. Maoz wrote nine original tracks for this CD. The CD is part of the Radical Jewish Culture series on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records. Lipkin is a New York based musician who has recorded, arranged and produced for other artists including Sandi Kimmel, Christine Pepe and Neal Bomberg. Her first CD was Raise the Honey. REFLECTIONS – Jewish Musical Journeys

Do you or your family know any unusual or interesting Seder or Shabbat songs? If so we’d love to hear from you – even if you don’t have the voice of an opera singer!

The REFLECTIONS project is creating an anthology of the huge range of different melodies sung in Jewish homes around Britain at Seder, Chanukah and Shabbat and recording them for posterity. Through the family stories of our interviewees we are tracing the origins of the songs and in this way developing a collection of Jewish Musical Journeys – a social history of the British Jewish community through its music.

Each family has its favourite tunes for the traditional Pesach songs or Shabbat Zmirot lyrics and the variations reflect the different family origins. We have already recorded eight different versions of Chad Gadya from Belarus, Hungary, Lithuania, Rhodes, Russia, Turkey and the UK!…

Judaica Sound Archives at FAU Features Legendary Yiddish Entertainment Family on its Website

The Judaica Sound ArchivesR (JSA) at Florida Atlantic University
Libraries has obtained the rights to offer on its website a major collection
of performances by the Bursteins, one of the most enduring family names in
Yiddish entertainment.

The JSA, located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, created the collection
from holdings that had been donated to the archives at different times and
from different sources. It includes 33 albums and features the combined
works of Pesach Burstein, who produced musicals for audiences worldwide in
the 1920s; his wife, Lillian Lux, who joined his troupe when she was 17; and
their twins, Susan Burstein-Roth and Mike (Burstein) Burstyn. One can listen
to the Burstein family audio collection and read about the family’s

slides. After the talk Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman, and Itzig

30-minute educational performances, just for Usdan students, at its on-site
1,000-seat McKinley Ampitheater, beginning Monday June 30.

A unique event this season will be the July 17 Concert of Remembrance and
Celebration; 60th Anniversary of Israel, hosted by the international concert
presenter and programmer Caroline Stoessinger. The concert will include excerpts
from Brundibar, the children s opera first performed in the Terezin concentration

“Teach My Lips a Blessing: The Music of Erik Contzius” makes its
debut at Temple Israel of New Rochelle on June 20, 2008. Recorded
with the Amor Artis Chamber Choir under the baton of Maestro Johannes
Somary, Christopher Creaghan, organist, guest cantors Helene Reps and
Hayley Kobilinsky, tenor Jacob Meiner and the Youth Choir of Temple
Israel, Cantor Erik Contzius lends his baritone voice and
compositional style to this CD of twenty works for the synagogue.
This collection highlights the grandeur of the Reform prayer service
as well as several of the Psalms and other liturgies. Contzius’
composition, “And Hannah Prayed,” featured on this recording was
recently selected as a finalist at Shalshelet’s Third International
Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music in Wisconsin.

Dinah Shore, born Frances Rose, who grew up in Winchester, Tennessee (and later, Nashville) was a daughter of Jewish immigrants. Her mother was a contralto and her father a merchant. She suffered from polio, but was not hampered in her educational pursuits to go on to Vanderbilt University. From there she went to New York to be a singer. She cut her first recording in 1940, and from there went into radio and later television.Her first live engagement was with Ed Wynn on NBC. She remained with that network for most of her tv career.

Amaseffer, a band from Israel has release a new CD “Slaves for Life” which features everthing from rock, metal to sounds of the Middle East. The recording is part of a planned trilogy that tells the history of the Israel people. In a way, it feels a bit like a rock opera or the score to a film, but the music can’t be pinned down to one style. However, the recording is quite compelling. Considering that this reviewer is not a heavy metal fan that’s saying a lot. The album shifts mood with each scenario presented. increasing numbers of Jews in America — both Americans and Israelis — are tuning
into Israeli music performances.

Singing in unintelligible gibberish as her hands strike the
darbuka drum with frantic intensity, the short, pretty brunette at center stage
holds the audience transfixed as she reaches the song’s crescendo.
When she sounds her final note, the audience rises for a standing ovation.
Though it is her New York debut concert, Israeli singer-songwriter Din Din Aviv is
no stranger here. The performance hall at the Museum of Jewish Heritage is packed
with Israeli fans of Aviv who live in New York and American Jews clutching her CD.…

So ends the poem “Wild Peace” by Yehuda Amichai. Those words were the starting point
for composer Charles Osborne and librettist Aryeh Finklestein as they set out to
create a musical tribute for Israel’s 60th birthday. The result is Like Wildflowers,
Suddenly, an oratorio encompassing three stages of Jewish history-biblical, the
diaspora and the modern Jewish state of Israel.

In this special lecture-concert leading up to the composition’s world premiere with
the Zamir Chorale of Boston on June 1 at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge, Mass., Osborne
and Finklestein will be joined by the Zamir Chorale and founding director Joshua
Jacobson to explore the inspiration for their work and the process of musical

Orphans. This opera, by composer Adam Silverman and librettist Susan Gubernat, is a
moving, impassioned story based on the life of Janusz Korczak (1878-1942). Directed

Watts mother-daughter team, and their band of klezmer stars from the
