Traverse the deserts of the Middle East, the mountains of northern India, and the warm waters of the Mediterranean with Eliyahu Sills and his Qadim Ensemble. The group and their music bring ancient musical traditions to a contemporary audience, allowing for a musical dialogue between the different cultures. The group performs instrumental pieces as well as songs with words in Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Turkish, Farsi and Ladino.

Qadim is a word found both in Hebrew and Arabic meaning “ancient past” and “that which precedes” as well as “forward movement” and “that which will come.” The band is aptly named as their ancient and timeless music bridges cultures from throughout the near east, such as Mizrakhi, Sephardic and Ashkenazi, with Arabic, Turkish, Persian and north Indian.…

Holly Montgomery, a singer-songwriter and bass player originally from Louisville, KY,  transplanted to L.A. and then again to Washington DC., has just released her EP, “Book of our Tribe” under the project name “Eve Rising”. Leah Epstein is a song writer living in Israel since making Aliya from Chicago in 1981. She lives on Moshav Keshet, an orthodox community in the Golan. Her Hebrew and English songs are wistful, and at the same time religious and personal. The music itself is heavily influenced from a ‘time capsule’ of American song from some 30 years ago, such as American folk, Carole King or Joni Mitchell. There are some highly personal songs, such as “Child of the Heights” dedicated to her son killed in a car accident, and other of her texts are more universally and politically themed. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine: The Phonoarchive of Jewish Folklore

A re-recording project, carried out in 1996-1999,is one of the most important recent finds in Jewish music. The collaborative project between the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, a library of over 14 million items, and the Institute for Information Recording of the NAS of Ukraine, is resulting in first fruits: a 1997 CD, “Treasures of Jewish Culture in Ukraine” with a promised next release of a CD dedicated to the folklore activity of Joel Engel. Known as “The Southwest’s Celebration of Klezmer Music and Dance”, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2009 will present a weekend of concerts, dance parties, classes and workshops featuring the world-renowned
klezmer duo Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer, the renowned dancer, choreographer,
dance scholar and historian Judith Brin Ingber, as well as many local artists.
‘Klezmer’ is the music and dance of the Jewish people of Eastern Europe which is
currently enjoying a revival in world music as well as in popular music and culture.
The annual festival will take place over Presidents Day Weekend from February 12-15
(Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon) at Albuquerque’s Congregation Nahalat

The Research Grants Program of the Association for Recorded Sound
Collections supports scholarship and publication in the fields of sound
recording research and audio preservation. (This program is separate from
the ARSC Preservation Grants Program, which encourages and supports the
preservation of historically significant sound recordings of Western Art
Music.) Project categories eligible for consideration include: discography,
bibliography, historical studies of the sound recording industry and its
products, and any other subject likely to increase the public’s
understanding and appreciation of the lasting importance of recorded sound.

Songs of Life Festival in Bulgaria and Israel

The Songs of Life Festival will be held in
Israel and Bulgaria from Nov 21 – Dec 1, 2008. The festival will feature the Sacred
Service by Ernest Bloch.

The festival marks the 65th anniversary of the heroic rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian
Jews during World War II and serves as a celebration of the preservation of life.

Individual performers as well as choirs are invited to perform in the festival.
Performers will sing Bloch s Sacred Service in Bulgaria and Israel. The 12-day
itinerary also allows for individual presentations by guest choirs and opportunities
for sightseeing and guided tours. Auditors are also invited to attend the festival

From May 9-12, 2008, Amsterdam’s new
concert hall, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, will host the premiere of the
International Jewish Music Festival in its new format. The main event
of the festival will be a 3-day Competition for Jewish music ensembles.

For the first time ever, a jury of international Jewish music experts
will judge a competition for musicians and ensembles with a goal of
an international career focusing on Jewish music. This includes folk,

Koen-Sarano, Mathilda

Israeli folklorist and ethnomusicologist, teacher and preserver of Ladino language and culture. Born, Milan, Italy, 1939 to a Sephardic family. Her mother Diana Hadjes and father Alfredo were from Aydin, Turkey. She studied at the Jewish Community School and the University in Milan. Married Aharon Cohen, now the Director General of The National Authority for Ladino and its Culture, in 1960. She received a B.A. in Italian Literature, Judeo-Spanish and Folklore in 1987 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1974-1994 made a living as a records specialist at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem. Since 1996 has been on the faculty of Ben Gurion University in the Negev as a Judeo-Spanish language instructor, and also teaches at Midreshet Amalia Jerusalem (since 1991). Since 1998 she has taught a course for Ladino Teachers, organized by The National Authority for Ladino and its Culture, in Jerusalem.…

Melodia Women’s Choir of New York City presents a mystical November concert of darkly transcendent music drawn from the classical and contemporary lexicon. Featured in the program is a special 200th anniversary tribute to Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, sister of Felix Mendelssohn and an extraordinarily talented, if often overlooked, composer.

Conducted by Cynthia Powell, the accomplished 32-member Melodia women’s ensemble will present “Twilight in the Garden of Dreams” on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at

Israel Composers League member, Jerusalem-based Gila (Gillian) Carcas, has a new website biography and a listing of compositions. Association for Canadian Jewish Studies Call for Papers

The Association for Canadian Jewish Studies/L’Association des études juives canadiennes (ACJS /l’AÉJC) will be holding its 34th Annual Conference May 30-June 1, 2010 at Concordia University in Montreal as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The conference provides a platform for original scholarly research in Canadian Jewish history, life and culture. Individuals are invited to send proposals for learned paper presentations in either English or French twenty minutes in
length (approximately 2,000 words) that concern some aspect of the Canadian Jewish experience.

Potential presenters are asked to submit a paper
proposal by Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The paper proposal should comprise a
400-word abstract formulated to clearly and concisely state the main argument
of the scholarly paper and indicate how it will contribute to existing
scholarship in the field of Canadian Jewish Studies.…

On December 16, the Center for Jewish Studies and the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center of the CUNY Graduate Center will present Beyond Boundaries: Klezmer Music in the 21st Century. Featuring distinguished klezmer performers, scholars, cultural commentators, and composers, the program includes an afternoon symposium with music (at 3:00 p.m.) and an evening concert (at 7:00 p.m.). This event is part of the Beyond Boundaries Series in Jewish Music, launched by the Center for Jewish Studies in Spring 2008.
