Musica Sacra will explore Jewish choral
repertoire that juxtaposes the sacred and secular, the ancient and
contemporary, the traditional and innovative. The concert, entitled
Give Ear to Thy People: Choral Music from the Jewish Tradition, will
feature Paths of Stone and Water, a world premiere written for Musica
Sacra by Osnat Netzer, Israeli composer and pianist. The concert also
includes Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning, which sets the Genesis
creation story, music by Noam Elkies, Yiddish choral music from the
early 20th century, and other selections from the Jewish diaspora.

Long-lost Mendelssohn Piece will bePerformed in Austin

Felix Mendelssohn photo credit Duke University Mendelssohn is have a good year in 2009. Last month in New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage held concerts of some “new” Mendelssohn works… newly rehearsed after some 100 years. This Saturday Feb 21, 2009, the Austin Civic Orchestra will perform “Fantasy and Variations for Two Pianos and Orchestra on the Gypsy March from Weber’s ‘Preziosa’ ” by Felix Mendelssohn. This will be the first time this piece has been heard since 1833. The manuscript piece, never published, and first performed by Ignaz Moscheles and Felix Mendelssohn was set aside and later owned by Anton Rubinstein. After he donated it, it was lost in the archive of the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia for over a hundred years. Southwestern University professor J. Michael Cooper and Jonathan Bellman of the University of Northern Colorado, have painstakingly reconstructed the work.…

3 Choirs Come together for 40th Anniversary

Zamir Chorale of Boston announces that there will be a performance with the Jerusalem Academy Choir at Northeastern’s New Fenway Center in a special three-choir concert at
on October 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Artistic Director Joshua Jacobson, who is also Director of Choral Activities at
Northeastern, will conduct sets by NU’s choir and Zamir, followed by a performance
by the Jerusalem Academy Chamber Choir (JACC), considered one of the finest musical
groups in Israel. For the finale, all three choirs will share the stage.
The JACC, comprised of 30 music students and led by Stanley Sperber, is also
celebrating its 40th anniversary. Sperber, founded the Zamir Chorale in 1960 in New York and inspired Jacobson to form the Zamir Chorale of Boston in 1969.…

“Funky Music With a Jewish Twist” is what Mama Doni (aka Doni Zasloff) and her Band
will bring to Tikvat Israel on Sunday, December 13 in a free concert open to the
entire community. Winners of the 2008 “Simcha Award” at the International Jewish
Music Festival in Amsterdam, the Band’s repertoire is a wild mix of musical
styles–reggae, folk, classic rock, country, hip hop, klezmer, and theatrical–woven

International Jewish Music Festival — Amsterdam

The 15th edition of the International Jewish Music Festival will be
held in the brand new concert halls of the Amsterdam Conservatory. We welcome back the
winners from last year’s international competition for a weekend filled with
music.

Jewish music sub-genres: hip-hop and reggae for kids, Yiddish song, Sephardic

“DEBBIE & FRIENDS:” CONCERT TO BENEFIT HUC-JIR AND ITS SCHOOL OF SACRED MUSIC

Launching of National Cantorial Scholarship Initiative
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, legendary American Jewish composer,
singer, and recording artist, Debbie Friedman, will be the featured
performer at a concert to benefit Hebrew Union College – Jewish
Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) and its School of Sacred Music (SSM).

“Debbie & Friends” will also include performances by The Afro-Semitic
Experience, HaZamir (the International Jewish High School Choir), The
Western Wind, HUC-JIR Alumni, Faculty and Students, as well as surprise
guests. All will be performing the music of the woman who the Jerusalem
Post has called a “phenomenon” and the New York Times has lauded for
creating “a powerful and euphoric body of work.”

In 2007, Debbie was appointed to the Faculty of the Hebrew Union College
– School of Sacred Music and the fact that the concert is a benefit in
support of HUC-JIR and the SSM is something that is of great importance

then have the opportunity to gain hands-on (or feet-on!) experience,

more depth, or to learn some of the dances with experienced dance leader and
drummer Guy Schalom, with live music from members of the band. No previous
knowledge of klezmer music or dance required. Instrumentalists should be
grade 4 equivalent or above.

The Ensemble Lucidarium, a famous international group of
scholar musicians specialized in the works of the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance, will perform: “La Istoria de Purim,” Jewish music and
poetry from the Italian Renaissance, which was awarded first prize in 2004
by the European Association for Jewish Culture. In the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries, northern Italy was a meeting place for three
separate Jewish communities: Ashkenazi, Jews coming from
northeastern Europe, Sephardic Jews from the Iberian peninsula, and
Italikim who had been in Italy since the days of the Roman Empire. The
music from this period is characterized by a fertile exchange of
ideas and culture between Jews and gentiles.…

The MFA Concert Program and The Boston Jewish Film Festival are delighted to present The Klezmatics in concert on Sunday, March 11, 7:30pm. The Boston Jewish Film Festival has screened several films over the years for which scores have been written by the Klezmatics, including Jonathan Berman’s The Shvitz (1995 and 1999 Festivals), Pearl Gluck’s Divan (2003 Festival), and Eric Greenberg Anjou’s A Cantor’s Tale (2005 Festival).

Chamber Ensemble in a program that includes new American Jewish music by David
Lefkowitz and Maria Newman. Both of these young Los Angeles-based musicians are in

works by Leonard Bernstein and Robert Schumann.

The Women Cantor’s Network will hold its annual conference and 25th year celebration at Congregation

music are welcomed. This year’s conference theme is “Even Higher: The

National Endowment for the Arts celebrates master folk and traditional artists by awarding fellowships each year. Ken Maltz and Sy Kushner‘s combined years of experience in the field of Jewish music is more than 80 years. From time to time, they have collaborated on each others’ projects, Ken recording and performing as a guest artist with the Sy Kushner Jewish Music Ensemble and assisting in the release of Sy’s very popular klezmer music transcription fake books, while Sy has performed with Ken’s bands including Kapelye, one of the first bands of the klezmer revival. They have come together as a duo to perform lesser known, but beautiful works within the klezmer repertoire and beyond.
