She has made an impact not only in the Midwest, giving concerts to children and adults for over thirty years, but has published a song book, Sing and Celebrate: Jewish Songs for All Occasions (Danza Publications, 1987) with a CD available. Elaine’s songs teach about Jewish life and themes in an upbeat, yet non-insipid fashion, with varied arrangements. Claire Barry Singer of Yiddish Hits Dead at 94

Claire Barry, of the famous duo “The Barry Sisters” died Nov.22, 2014 at the age of 94. For over four decades, she and her sister Merna made Yiddish songs into mid-century contemporary hits such as “Bei Mir Bistu Shein” and “Mein Shtetle Belz”. They outlasted the radio age and went onto TV and stage. Ever elegant, the Barry Sisters sang in tight harmonies in “swing” and the styles of the day. puppet theater production of “The Dybbuk” here in Portland.
(Since then I’ve worked on two other productions of the same

They perform in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut area. The Klezmer Connection specializes in klezmer, Yiddish and Israeli music, as well as American standards such as Broadway showtunes and lots of swing music. Repository continues to grow and now contains 340 titles of rare and
out-of-print books.
Among the items added this week:

Gerson Rosenzweig] (New York, 1898) which contains the songs: “America,

Applications are now open for the Israeli Music Competition and the Ernest Bloch Music Competition.

The Israeli Music Competition was begun in 2008 and aims to familarise both professionals and students with the fascinating styles of Israeli music – a rich tapestry of sounds which produce a musical blend without equal; a fusion of Western musical idioms such as Klezmer (brought over with the first immigrants in the 1880s), and Eastern traditions brought by Jews from Arab countries.

The Ernest Bloch Music Competition was begun in 2009. Ernest Bloch (24 July 1880 β€šΓ„Γ¬ 15 July 1959) was a Swiss-born, American-Jewish composer and, since the 50th anniversary of his death was commemorated in 2009, the addition of the Ernest Bloch Music Competition to the Israeli Music Competition has drawn much worldwide interest.…

The conference provides a platform for original scholarly research in Canadian Jewish history, life and culture. NEW YORK FESTIVAL OF SONG 2008-2009, 21st SEASON

Leonard Bernstein, Voices of the Jewish Diaspora and
Fugitives (composers who left Germany during the 1930’s), will all
be themes of the acclaimed New York Festival Of Song (NYFOS, www.nyfos.org)presentations for
2008-9. A guest artist will be the rising Israeli mezzo-soprano
Rinat Shaham, already an acclaimed Carmen in Europe.

Lecture: Walter Zev Feldman discusses the cultural history of
this area of ethnic transformation and his recent expedition
which discovered musicians of mixed ancestry still
performing traditional Jewish music in his father’s hometown
of Edinets. A reception will follow the event.

Chazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo Dead at 92

Chazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo z”l died February 21 at around 3am. He had been hospitalized for several days with breathing difficulties. Abraham Lopes Cardozo was born in Amsterdam, Holland on September 27, 1914. He was the great-grandson of the Chief Rabbi in Amsterdam and the son of the choir director of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue there. He came to his American post in 1946 and served Congregation Shearith Israel in New York for over 40 years. Cardozo’s recordings from 1959 were recently rereleased in time for the celebration of the 350th anniversary of Jews in America, and reviewed by this website: http://www.jmwc.org/NewCDReviews/shearithisraelcds.html

He was a made a Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau by Queen Beatrix of Holland on June 7, 2000.
Two years ago the Chazzan celebrated his 90th birthday in Amsterdam.…
