From “West Side Story” to “Wicked,” the music of the Broadway theatre
will be highlighted at the “Cantors’ Cabaret” concert at 7p.m.,
Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 W 83rd Street off
Central Park West.

Joining Rodeph Sholom’s Cantor Rebecca Garfein and Cantorial
Intern, Jennifer Strauss-Klein are New York Metro Area Cantors, Claire Franco,
Daniel Singer, Howard Stahl and pianist, Jonathan Faiman. The concert, a
light-hearted tribute to the Broadway theatre will benefit the School of Sacred
Music Scholarship Fund at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and
Project Kehila, Rodeph Sholom’s response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
To date, Project Kehila has contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the hard-hit
Gulf community.

Featured will be mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter in a program of music composed by Jewish composers during their imprisonment at Theresienstadt, a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. She is being assisted in this concert by the noted violinist Daniel Hope, and by her regular accompanist, Bengt Forsberg.

festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.

Presidents’ Day weekend.

The Southwest’s annual celebration
of Klezmer music and dance, KLEZMERQUERQUE 2008, will present a weekend of concerts,

Greater Monmouth County in Deal Park, New Jersey. The event will feature The Gerard

Traverse the deserts of the Middle East, the mountains of northern India, and the warm waters of the Mediterranean with Eliyahu Sills and his Qadim Ensemble. The group and their music bring ancient musical traditions to a contemporary audience, allowing for a musical dialogue between the different cultures. The group performs instrumental pieces as well as songs with words in Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Turkish, Farsi and Ladino.

A concert on the music of the 1000 year history of French Jewry, from Rashi to today, will take place at Temple Emanu-El in Providence, RI, Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 7pm. The concert will include music of every era and genre from classical, folk to jazz, with an original script narrated by Professor Bill Miles, and accompanied by renowned pianist Judith Lyn Stillman. Frank London‘s Klezmer Brass Band Allstars will perform a Hanukkah

music. Their 2005 CD Carnival Conspiracy was Rolling Stone magazine’s #1 non-English
recording. This concert will feature joyous Jewish-Gypsy-Balkan-jazz party sounds

In six weeks time the International Jewish Music Festival 2012 will
start. Mames Babegenush and Gerard Edery will kick off the event on
Wednesday 10th October with an opening concert in the Portugese
Synagoge. On Thursday and Friday in the Compagnietheater,
more than 100 musicians from 14 countries will try and secure their
place in the finals on Saturday. On Sunday it’s your turn! Take

“KLEZMERQUERQUE” –Albuquerque, New Mexico’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival
celebrates its seventh year over Presidents Day weekend February 12-15, 2009.

for a memorable concert of cantorial and Hanukkah music by Israeli composer Raymond Goldstein who will be joined by Cantors Chaim Dovid Berson, Sanford Cohen, Brian Mayer and Gideon Zelermyer (formerly of West Hartford), Adrian Durlester, pianist and instrumentalists. Additionally, The Beth El Adult and Children’s Choirs, Children’s Choirs from The Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford and Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy of Greater Hartford will raise their voices under the direction of Cantor Joseph Ness.

Admission is $20. $15 for seniors and students. Children under 12 free. Tickets available at temple office or at the door.

C Michael Reese wrote reviews and this biographical sketch: “Ursula Mamlok was born in 1928 in Berlin. Her Jewish family left Germany in 1941 and had to settle for Ecuador as the US quota for German immigrants had been capped. From there she submitted handwritten compositions to American Universities until she received a full scholarship from the Mannes College in New York. She studied with George Szell at Mannes, Roger Sessions (lessons during his weekly visits to New York) and later Vittorio Giannini at the Manhattan School of Music.”

Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn at The Jewish Museum

A recent acquisition to The Jewish Museum, Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, 1842, by
19th century German artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, has been added to
the “Modernity” section of Culture and Continuity. The subject of this
portrait was the sister of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy,
a talented composer and musician in her own right. Fanny Hensel was
the wife of a fellow painter, Wilhelm Hensel, whom Oppenheim met in Rome
with the Nazarenes.
