Statman Chanukicks- It -Off

This December, celebrate this season with festive holiday music for the whole
family. On Wednesday, December 5 at 7 p.m. Celebrate Hanukkah with the Andy Statman
Trio. Playing a unique blend of klezmer, rock, folk, and jazz. Statman has worked
with musical legends Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan, and was a lead musician on Itzhak
Perlman’s klezmer sensation, In the Fiddler’s House. Unable to categorize his
music, Statman offers this description to listeners: “It’s deeply Jewish because I
am, and it’s honest because I am.” Tickets are $25 adults, $20 seniors, $15
students/members.

On December 25th join Joshua Nelson and his Kosher Gospel Choir
for Challah-lujah with performances at 1 PM & 3:30 PM. Performing to sold-out crowds

Festival of Lights will ignite 200 voices in Manhattan

Over 200 adults and children will celebrate
Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, in concert, 3 P.M., Sunday, December
9, 2007 as Congregation Rodeph Sholom of Manhattan hosts its unique,
multigenerational Festival of Choirs. The eighth annual concert will
feature cantors and their volunteer adult and children’s choirs from all
over the New York metropolitan area. This year, the first night of
Chanukah is Friday, December 4, 2007.

A Festival of Choirs is free of charge and open to the entire community.
Congregation Rodeph Sholom is located at 7 West 83rd Street off of

Women Sing Sephard in Toronto

Judith Cohen will be in Toronto, along with her daughter Tamar singing an eclectic mix at the
Miles Nadal JCC
Sunday October 28
at 4 pm.
It’s co-sponsored by the Cultural Celebration of the Spanish Language, so they will be concentrating
on Sephardic music, with some regional Spanish songs and a surprise –
flamenco-tangos songs by Tamar. Geoff Clarfield joins the duo on oud, percussion and
flamenco rhythm guitar . Songs will include a bit of Balkan, French Canadian, Yiddish, Portuguese – but mostly Sephardic and Spanish selections.

The American Society for Jewish Music would like to consider your music for performance at its annual concert at the Center for Jewish History in New York City on Monday, June 2nd, 2008. Your music will be given a first-class performance in a prominent New York venue. Please submit by November 16, 2007 one vocal work for one or two solo voices with keyboard or small chamber ensemble accompaniment. Pieces should be about 4-10 minutes long and well-crafted. (The majority of the committee has a preference for “Art Music.”) The piece should have some sort of Jewish musical, thematic or textual content, and the composer must be living or working in the U.S.…

the fieldwork of Moshe Beregovsky, a Soviet-Jewish
ethnomusicologist, Svigals brings to life, through music and
conversation, tunes recorded on wax cylinders before World War II.
This incredible collection disappeared when Beregovsky was exiled to
Siberia but was recently rediscovered in a dusty archive. Come

KlezKanada, in Lanier, Quebec Canada is starting tonight, Monday August 20th. This is the 12th year of the annual camp program. This year, the all star faculty is amazing, the students are superb, and the excitement is palpable. If you’re not here this year, make sure to mark this week on your calendar for next. Looks like the first newsletter, by Ari Davidow, greeted the attendees as they arrived. Each day of camp, there’s a camp newsletter published in 3 languages which might be any combination of Yiddish, English, French, Spanish, German or Russian. As the State of Israel approaches the sixtieth anniversary
of its founding in the spring of 2008, academic scholarship
continues to
focus primarily on its political life, religious and ethnic diversity,
and foreign policy. Much less attention has been devoted to the
cultural
life of Israeli society and its impact on evolving Israeli identities
across generations. One of the most dynamic yet least studied
spheres of
Israeli culture to emerge in the six decades since statehood is its
music, ranging from the worlds of pop music, rock, rap, and

Yiddish singer Sharon Bernstein (voice & piano) and klezmer pioneer Stu Brotman (bass, tsimbl, & percussion) join forces in a unique performance set to paintings by self-taught Toronto artist Mayer Kirshenblatt . Kirshenblatt’s vibrant portraits of his home town Apt, Poland before the Holocaust inspire a rich blend of traditional song and contemporary sound . A new website called “Siddur Audio” comes from Atlanta with the work of Rabbi Mark Zimmerman. http://www.sidduraudio.com
You can use the site to learn the Tefillot, and it is completely free. Most of the Siddur has
already been recorded in mp3 format. Rabbi Zimmerman has updated the site and increased the server capacity to accommodate the growing number of downloads that it has been generating lately. He has also
recently added audio of the weekday davening and the Passover Seder as well.

Eastern Tradition CD from The Jewish Music Heritage Project

The Jewish Music Heritage Project is the ambitious undertaking of Cantor Sholom Kalib and The Jewish Music Heritage Project Boys’ and Men’s Choir. The purpose of the Jewish Music Heritage Project is to “document, catalog, and disseminate one of the great sacred musical traditions of the world, namely that of the Eastern European Synagogue, which is now in real danger of being lost forever.” So far, 2 vols of a 5 vol. set consisting of 20 books is being published by Syracuse University Press, and a 75 CD set of the music is envisioned. The deadline for submissions to the Shalshelet liturgical music competition is November 1, 2007, which is closer than you think, if you are preparing to compose a musical composition. The composition can be by a professional, or a student over 18 (or under 18 with parental signature), and can be a musical choral work, a simple melody or melody with instruments. The purpose is for a composition for a sacred Jewish text, must be original, and not previously published. All the rules of the competition are available at their website. Svigals-Rushefsky in “Mahler’s World: Jewish Music in the Hapsburg Empire”

Klezmer violin superstar Alicia Svigals
returns to the Maverick on July 14 at 8:00 p.m. with tsimblist Pete
Rushefsky.

Ms. Svigals and Mr. Rushefsky brought down the house last summer at
Maverick, and this year¹s concert is called “Mahler¹s World: Jewish Music in
the Hapsburg Empire.” The concert is part of Maverick¹s season-long
celebration of the centenary of Gustav Mahler¹s arrival in America to lead
the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

Classical concerts are Saturday evenings at 6:00 and Sunday afternoons at
3:00, with jazz, world music, and klezmer on selected Saturday nights at
8:00. Young people¹s concerts are Saturday mornings at 11:00.

The box office opens an hour before each concert; the hall opens half an
hour before curtain time. Except for the last weekend of the season, ticket

The largest Yiddish festival in Germany is taking place now, July 9, through August 9, 2007.
The festival, in operation since the year 2000, invited musicians to teach Klezmer in several
workshops to hundreds of interested fans or amateur-musicians. The slogan of this

Sharon Farber Commission Premiers this October in Israel

Composer Sharon Farber has recently been commissioned by The Israeli Chamber
Orchestra to compose a new work, which will open up the 2007/8 Season. The

Ms. Farber is also the recent First Prize Winner of the Cincinnati Camerata
Composition Competition with her piece The Third Mother/Mothers’ Lament.
This A cappella piece was written in memory of slain reporter Daniel Pearl
and premiered by The Los Angeles Master Chorale. Ms. Farber¹s commissioned
works have been performed internationally, and her acclaimed concert piece
for choir, orchestra and ethnic instruments, ASHKINA, (featuring the
renowned musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek), was performed in Boston by the
prestigious MUSICA SACRA choir in March, 2007.

Danny Bergson and Rabbi Mitch Goodman, is performing at The Waterside Arts
Centre, Sale, Manchester, UK on June 17th. This is the third concert by the two
orthodox Rabbis, who have already had such an effect on the Jewish music
world. Music and Joy plays a sophisticated mix of rock, jazz, fusion, world
and Jewish sounds.

Music and Joy‘s concert starts at 19.30 at The Waterside Arts Centre, Sale,
