Rochelle Zucker decided to dedicate a radio show to the memory of the French Yiddish singer, composer and author Jacques Grober.

Grober was born in Paris in 1951 – the son of Holocaust Survivirs from
Poland. From about 1980 until his death in 2006 – when he was just in his
prime, Grober was vital and important force of the Yiddish music scene in
France. He studied Yiidish singing with the Yiddish legend Sarah Gorby. The more
he became involved with Yiddish, the language of his parents and
grandparents, the more he realized how important it was to create
contemporaty songs in Yiddish so that Yiddish could be continue being heard
as a living language.…

at The Marseilles, 230 West 103 St, New York, NY.
Knowledge of Yiddish is not required to sing in the Chorus.
Auditions are by appointment only and must be scheduled in advance by emailing

Rehearsals are held on Mondays at the Marseilles
from 6:30 to 8:30 PM,
from September through early June,
except on Jewish and some national holidays.

and one of Osborne’s at the Roslyn concert.
Both concerts will open with a “The Ballad of Adam and Eve” by Elie Siegmeister
and Langston Hughes, premiered 30 years ago at

The final two concerts of The Jewish Museum’s popular
SummerNights series are on Thursday evenings, July 16 and 23. On July
16, SLAVIC SOUL PARTY! performs virtuosic new brass band music
incorporating diverse influences, and on July 23, Ljova and the
Kontraband offer a mix of Eastern-European melodies, Latin rhythms and
jazz-inspired improvisations. Concerts begin at 7:30 pm. The Jewish
Museum is located at Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street, Manhattan.

Koleinu in Boston

Koleinu, Boston s Jewish Community Chorus, was founded in 2002 by Hazzan Scott
Sokol, of the Jewish Music Institue of Hebrew College, and by Larry Kozinn to
provide a place open to all to learn, sing and perform Jewish choral music. Carol
Marton, known for her work in Jewish choral music, is the founding Artistic
Director.

Since that time, Koleinu has given concerts for enthusiastic audiences at synagogues
all around Greater Boston, at Hebrew College and annually at Hebrew Senior Life. In
the fall of 2009, Koleinu represented Boston at an historic concert in Providence,
RI, marking the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht a sold-out, multimedia production
that featured 200 adult and youth voices, full orchestra, and narration by Leonard
Nimoy. In the spring of 2008, Koleinu spearheaded Voices Raised Against Violence,
a collaborative concert of Jewish and Gospel music, to benefit an anti-violence and
leadership development program for Boston s youth.…

Les sefaradim, Juifs expulsés d’Espagne en 1492 se sont réfugiés dans
l’Empire ottoman, en Afrique du Nord et dans plusieurs pays d’Europe. Ils
y ont emmené leur langue, le judéo-espagnol (ou ladino), leur culture et
leurs chants, qui furent ainsi transmis de génération en génération.

Ce répertoire, constamment enrichi et renouvelé, a permis aux Juifs de
la diaspora séfarade d’affirmer leur culture particulière: juive et

Deborah Katchko-Gray announces the release of the compilaton Katchko: 3 Generations of Cantorial Art, featuring the music of Adolph Katchko, and including a CD of music sung by Cantor Katchko-Gray. The book is a combination of scholarly articles about the lives and work of Cantor Adolph Katchko (1866-1958) and CantorTheodore Katchko (1927-1997) and music. Essays on the nature of the cantorate, and transcripts of talks given by the cantors, as well as still photos from the film “The Voice of Israel”, family memorabila, letters, programs, and testimonials, all lend to the interesting archival presentation in the work. In addition to this background material, the important musical works of Adoph Katchko are presented in score with guitar chords in “female friendly” vocal ranges. These vocal arrangements by Deborah allow this music to become available to everyone, including modern female cantors who wish to sing the music of the “Golden Age” of cantors.…

Usdan Center For the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), now
entering its 42nd season and declared a ‘Best O’f class or camp for 2009 by
TimeOutNY/Kids, NY Metro Parents and Long Island Press, will open its series
of Festival Concerts, private educational performances for its students, on
Monday June 29 at the Center¹s 200-acre woodland campus. These will be in
addition to many special workshops that will offer by the visiting artists
for Usdan students. The Center¹s 2009 season runs from June 29 to August 14.
Usdan is located at 185 Colonial Springs Road, in Huntington, Long Island.

The Center for Jewish History, located in the heart of New York City, is pleased to announce that they have improved access to the collections of partners by extending the operating hours of the Lillian Goldman Reading Room and the Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute to five days a week!

Scholars, students and the general public now have the opportunity to conduct onsite research on Mondays from 9:30am – 7:30pm, Tuesdays – Thursdays from 9:30am – 5:30pm, and Fridays from 9:30am – 1:30pm.

Suvenir Kantigas en Ladino
There are only a few albums that are wholly satisfying whether it’s the music, the vocals or accompaniment, the selection or arrangements. One new album that nicely fits the bill is the Suvenir Kantigas en Ladino recently released on CD by Betty Klein of Jerusalem. It’s simple: It’s beautiful. On much of this album are newly composed songs to newly composed Ladino poetry. Klein sings and plays variously guitar, celtic harp, piano, keyboard, accordion, bouzouki, mandolin, flute, recorder, oud, percussion, as well as writing the compositions and making the arrangements. Both the texts and the collaborations read like a ‘who’s who’ of poets, Ladino teachers and experts throughout Israel, the US and elsewhere. This recording is not the relic of some long dying culture, but a showcase of a vibrant society still active amongst a large population in Israel and abroad.…

Zemel Choir in Celebration with Song

The ‘Celebration with Song’
event will be held on the 31 May and concluding in a concert on the
evening of 14 June 2009 at St John’s Smith Square London SW1.
This is the third year Zemel is participating, and the chorus is planning something a little bit different.
Their concert will be celebrating the output of Jewish music from a single country, the United
States of America. On the first date Zemel will be running a guest workshop
focusing on voice technique and other aspects of choral singing. This year
Zemel’s guest workshop leader will be the BBC’s Suzi Digby an experienced voice coach and conductor and well known to television audiences from her appearances on ‘Last Choir Standing’ and the
BBC’s ‘Choir of the Year’.…

Women in Music Festival at Eastman

The Women in Music Festival being held at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester has several concerts of interest to our readers. On Monday, March 23 will be a concert that includes the new composition of Eva Wasserman-Margolis, “The Generation of Hope”. On Wednesday, March 25 will be an all Judith L.
