The Pianos I Have Known

Released this past week: “The Pianos I Have Known: The Autobiography Of Irving Fields”
Collaboratively written between 94 year old Irving Fields and Huffington Post
music columnist Tony Sachs
(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tony-sachs/) and edited and released by music critic
Aaron Joy through his indie book publishing and music label Roman Midnight Music
(http://www.romanmidnightmusic.org).

The book is currently available only in paperback via Lulu, and on Amazon.

“He’s [Fields] the composer of chart-topping songs performed by the likes of Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan and Xavier Cugat… one of the original Manhattan “society” cocktail
pianists whose career stretches back to the days of Prohibition… whose sister
Peppy was known as the Sophie Tucker of Miami Beach due to her long running radio
show… the originator of one of the first piano-drum-bass trios, with a later trio
lasting nearly 40 years… the man who first fused Jewish and Latin music with the
classic 1959 album “Bagels & Bongos”… a headliner at Carnegie Hall, top draw on
round-the-world cruises, star of radio and TV, and writer/performer of a hit song on
YouTube… and he’s still playing six nights a week as he approaches his 100th
birthday… This is the life of a Jewish kid from the Lower East Side who hated
practicing piano.” He’s also the inspiration behind the writing of
the book ‘And You Shall Know Us By The Trail Of Our Vinyl’ about Jewish music
history and the first release by the ReBoot Stereophonic jazz reissue label.…

Klezmer & Balkan team up and hit the famed stage of the Public Theare’s Joe’s Pub. It’s SATURDAY, it’s NIGHT (motzey shabes), it’s LIVE. What could be better? – YOU attending this event!

Litvakus band led by Dmitri Zisl Slepovitch performs traditional pieces of the Lithuanian and Belarusian Jewish community, as well as Zisl’s original compositions, creating a bridge between the old-time North-Eastern European shtetls and the present-day New York’s folk, klezmer, and theater scene.
“Dmitri Slepovich’s trilling clarinet makes for irresistible dancing music.” -Forward

Featuring odd meters, unusual scales and a fine helping of gorgeous Balkan and Romany (Gypsy) melodies played on reeds, trumpet, accordion, tuba and drums, Raya Brass Band brings the East European get-down wherever it goes.…

Neshama Carlebach Sings Hatikvah with Inclusive Lyrics

Where but YouTube would you be able to hear a new version of a national anthem? The Forward newspaper asked Neshama Carlebach to sing Hatikvah, but not just any recording. The article was suggesting some new lyrics that could potentially be more inclusive to all Israelis of whatever creed, color or religion in a democratic society. This proposed change is not just for Arabs (not Palestinians, but Israeli Arabs), but also may resonate with other minorities now living in Israel including Christians, Bahai, Druze, Buddhists and peoples of other faiths and ethnic groups.

Neshama Carlebach, daughter of the late Shlomo Carlebach, took up the idea and has released a YouTube video with the suggested new and “old”-er texts. Of course the lyrics of this song “Hatikvah” have been changed before, and also those other famous Jewish songs, such as “Jerusalem of Gold.” Each time, these changes have come about due to changes in historic circumstances.…

Program notes:

Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi was inspired by the folk song

life or living in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18;
hence, 18 variations. I decided to give the performer a choice
regarding the ordering of the variations as a reflection of my
sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and
composer (and, for that matter, listener).…
