Ashkenaz 2010!!!

Toronto’s Ashkenaz Festival is celebrating its
15th anniversary of presenting the Canadian and international Jewish
culture scene through music, dance, film, theatre, visual art, workshops, and
rituals, a project so ambitious that it’s taken two years to organize.

The festival kicks off on Tuesday August 31st and goes through Monday,
September 6th showcasing more than 90 acts and 200 individual
artists hailing from over a dozen countries. Originally created by and for
Klezmer/Yiddish junkies, Ashkenaz has now grown to reflect the most
cutting-edge contemporary Jewish music and art, drawing a cross-cultural and
multi-generational audience eager to join in on the joyful synergy.

USDAN CENTER STUDENTS TO PRESENT UNIQUE GALA PERFORMANCE OF ERNEST BLOCH’S SACRED SERVICE ON AUGUST 4TH.

CONCERT WILL HONOR BLOCH 50 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH.
CONDUCTOR AND SOLOIST ARE LEADING YOUNG ARTISTS.

On Wednesday evening, August 4th, Usdan Center students will present a
historic performance of one of Ernest Bloch’s greatest works, his Sacred
Service (Avodath Hakodesh) for orchestra, chorus, and baritone soloist.
Sacred Service has rarely been presented by young people, and its
performance on August 4th will be an artistic point of pride for Usdan, and
for its partner organization, UJA-Federation of New York.

Usdan’s senior orchestra and chorus will close the Center’s August 4th Gala
Concert with two parts of Sacred Service. The ensembles, composed of high
school-aged music students, will be conducted by Adam Glaser, a Usdan Center
alumnus, and the conductor of Juilliard’s top Pre-College orchestra.…

The lesson was written by Writer/Educator Danny Zeldin and is geared for High School students, although educators of all types are welcome to participate in the webinar. Rabbi Ethan Linden (Shir Chadash synagogue in New Orleans) will present the lesson and demonstrate how this powerful song can be used as a teaching tool in the classroom. 30th Anniversary of Klezmer Conservatory Band Features Reunion with

The legendary Klezmer Conservatory Band (KCB), the band that kick-started the klezmer music revival, will open the first annual Boston Jewish Music Festival (BJMF) with a gala concert celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary at the Berklee Performance Center on March 6, 2010 at 7:30 PM.

Tickets for the concert are on sale through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com) and the Berklee box office. Tickets for other BJMF events are now on sale, most through Ticketweb (www.ticketweb.com). The entire festival schedule is now posted on the BJMF web site.

Renowned Cleveland Music Collector Donates Jewish Recordings to FAU Libraries

Family of Renowned Cleveland Music Collector Donates Tens of Thousands of Recordings to FAU Libraries

BOCA RATON, FL – The family of Jack Saul, a renowned Cleveland music collector, has gifted about 10,000 unique Jewish records to Florida Atlantic University’s Judaica Sound Archives, which already held one of the world’s largest collections of preserved and digitized Judaic audio recordings. Another 50,000 vintage 78-rpm records from Saul’s collection will be used to establish a vintage records archive at FAU Libraries. In addition, 500 jazz LPs from the gift were added to the library’s extensive jazz collection.

Saul’s gift contained many rare and popular 78 rpms, LP albums and reel-to-reel tapes. While some of the recordings were new titles for the JSA, others were duplicates and replaced recordings in the archives that were not in as good condition.…

Yale Strom — In Memory Of

Dec. 16th at 7pm the world premiere of
YALE STROM’S quartet
“IN THE MEMORY OF…”

In the summer of 2008, musician Yale Strom traveled to Romania and discovered a musical treasure trove. In the upstairs women’s balcony of the 1871 synagogue of Carei he found a box of old books including the cantor’s music book with over 250 melodies notated by hand. THIS ROMANIAN JEWISH MUSICAL TREASURE HAD BEEN LOST UNTIL STROM’S DISCOVERY. In Memory of is a performance based upon the cantorial music he uncovered, and is dedicated to the Jews who perished during the Holocaust. Virtuoso cellist Mike Block and his string quartet will perform the new compositon.

After the quartet Cantor Ari Priven (Cong. Bnai Jeshurun) will sing some of the melodies from the “lost” cantor’s book and then Yale Strom and Mike Block will perform melodies from the same work as klezmer pieces.…

Lazarus Quartet at City Winery

The Lazarus Quartet is playing at the City Winery’s Klezmer Brunch series in Manhattan on
Sunday, December 27th. There are two sets, at 11 AM and 12:30 PM, a $10 cover
and brunch is available.
The repertoire draws heavily on the recorded works of Dave Tarras and Naftule
Brandwein. They also perform material from the Bulgarian, Greek and Turkish
musical traditions. The mission of the Lazarus Quartet is to present this music in a way
that’s reflective of their experiences as a Jazz musicians living in New York, so
there is a lot of improvisation and spontaneity on stage. The Lazarus Quartet
is Ben Holmes (trumpet), Uri Sharlin (accordion), Dan Loomis (bass) and Jeff Davis (drums).

“Funky Music With a Jewish Twist” is what Mama Doni (aka Doni Zasloff) and her Band
will bring to Tikvat Israel on Sunday, December 13 in a free concert open to the
entire community. Winners of the 2008 “Simcha Award” at the International Jewish
Music Festival in Amsterdam, the Band’s repertoire is a wild mix of musical
styles–reggae, folk, classic rock, country, hip hop, klezmer, and theatrical–woven
together with Yiddish terms and Jewish themes. And it’s suitable for everyone, from
“Babies to Bubbies”–hip young kids and their even hipper parents and grandparents.
The Mama Doni Band is performing 13 concerts during December alone, in Los Angeles,

Z”l

Barry Serota, a practicing attorney and executive director of the Institute for Jewish Sound Recording, died suddenly November 16, 2009 on a plane flight between New York and Madrid on the way to Israel.

Serota, widely known for his deep knowledge of Jewish music, had produced more than 100 recordings of Jewish sacred and secular music. Serota’s output at the Institute, based in Chicago, included choral, instrumental, folk and art music. Serota was especially known a promoter of chazzanut. Starting in 1969, he issued many esoteric Jewish music recordings under the imprint of Musique Internationale.

Serota, an advisor to the Milken Foundation, worked on their large project of the Library of American Jewish Music, the recordings which were published under the Naxos label.…

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Leonard Slatkin will give the premiere performance of the Clarinet Klezmer Concerto, by Wlad Marhulets. The featured clarinet soloist is David Krakauer, one of the foremost musicians of the vital new wave of klezmer. The concerts will take place at the Orchestra Hall in Detroit on December 10th – 13th, 2009.

Marhulet “DYBBUK” String Quartet Premiere

The string quartet Dybbuk by Wlad Marhulet was written for the New York based “J.A.C.K.” quartet. The piece is inspired by Jewish folklore, in which a Dybbuk is a malicious possessing spirit, believed to be the dislocated soul of a dead person. The piece depicts two aspects of Dybbuk – its wild and aggressive nature, as well as its memories from the past life full of suffering and tears.

The premiere is going to take place November 30th at 8:00pm.

In the summer of 2008, musician Yale Strom traveled to Romania and discovered a musical treasure trove. In the upstairs women’s balcony of the 1871 synagogue of Carei he found a box of old books including the cantor’s music book with over 250 melodies notated by hand. This Romanian Jewish musical treasure had been lost. In Memory of is a performance based upon the cantorial music he uncovered, and is dedicated to the Jews who perished during the Holocaust.…

at the Assembly Hall of the Community Church of New York, which shares

With a range of settings written from 1958 to 2009, the concert is truly a
major retrospective and will feature, among others, Emily Duncan-Brown and
Roz Woll

Over a more than 50-year period of devotion to the art song in fourteen
cycles, Mandelbaum has set poems by Millay, Leonie Adams, Karen Ethelsdattar,
Bettina Blake, and Benjamin J.R. Stolper, among others.
