The Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus, the longest-continually-performing Jewish chorus in the world, is celebrating it¹s 80th anniversary with three concerts this Spring (details below).
For 80 years, The Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus has inspired its listeners with an astonishing musical spectrum of Yiddish song. Centuries of hope, determination, humor, loss and renewal are bound up in each note they sing. The voices of sweatshop workers, immigrants, mothers, soldiers, tumlers, and lovers speak through their music. Founded in 1923 on New York’s Lower East Side, the Jewish People’s Philharmonic Chorus (known then as the “Freiheit Gezang Farein”) was a vocal part of the burgeoning labor movement. When the Chorus performed Jacob Schaefer’s oratorio “Tsvey Brider” in 1926, they were the first Jewish chorus in America to perform with an orchestra.…

Zamir Chorale of Boston announces that there will be a performance with the Jerusalem Academy Choir at Northeastern’s New Fenway Center in a special three-choir concert at

Artistic Director Joshua Jacobson, who is also Director of Choral Activities at
Northeastern, will conduct sets by NU’s choir and Zamir, followed by a performance
by the Jerusalem Academy Chamber Choir (JACC), considered one of the finest musical
groups in Israel. For the finale, all three choirs will share the stage.
The JACC, comprised of 30 music students and led by Stanley Sperber, is also

of the festival will be a 3-day Competition for Jewish music ensembles.

Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi was inspired by the folk song
Eliahu HaNavi (Elijah the Prophet), often sung during the closing
service of the Jewish Sabbath. The letters of Chai, which means
life or living in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18;
hence, 18 variations. I decided to give the performer a choice
regarding the ordering of the variations as a reflection of my
sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and

within Anglo Jewry, European and UK cantors assembled in Manchester for the
7th Annual European Cantors Convention. This took place from 2 – 5 July
2012, and hosted the launch of the European Cantors Association (ECA).
This new platform gave young cantors fresh resolve to engage with the
challenges they face. Working ECA Groups are being established in the North,
in London and in Europe to deal with local issues. A study day on the High
Holidays has been held in Manchester. The 2013 Convention is being planned
for London possibly with Dudu Fisher as guest. There is a growing group of

FAU Libraries Receive Gift in Memory of Barry Serota, Executive
Director of Chicago-based Institute for Jewish Sound Recording
BOCA RATON, FL. Florida Atlantic University recently received a
gift in memory of the late Barry Serota, an attorney, record producer and executive
director of the Chicago-based Institute for Jewish Sound Recording. Serota was
widely known for his deep knowledge of Jewish music and produced more than 100
recordings of Jewish sacred and secular music. His productions at the Institute for
Jewish Sound Recording included choral, instrumental, folk and art music.
Serota s mother, Blanche, donated 1,500 LPs, more than 700 78-rpm discs, 100 digital
audio tapes and 1,443 audio reel-to-reel tapes to the Judaica Sound Archives (JSA)
at FAU Libraries in honor of her son. The collection includes rare record masters
and pre-production one-of-a-kind recordings.…

In al-Andalus (Southern Spain), peoples of the three Abrahamic faiths—Islam,
Judaism, and Christianity—shared their arts and sciences for more than five hundred
years, creating a multicultural canon of music and poetry. Since 1492, Jews and
Muslims in North Africa have carried the musical traditions forward from al-Andalus.
Today, the musical expansion from over five centuries ago to the present day
flourishes in New York City with the New York Andalus Ensemble.…

Whether you have some experience as a klezmer player, Yiddish singer or dancer, or are completely new to the style, this hands-on workshop offers a feast of Eastern European Yiddish instrumental, vocal music and dance. ?This workshop will be taught with a lively, integrated approach?a marriage of instruments, singing and movement. Working by ear and with written music, we will explore ways to express the full potential of Yiddish music and dance, as individuals and as a group. 2004 marks the 20th edition of KlezKamp: The Yiddish Folk Arts
Program. And while this is our birthday celebration, KlezKampers are
the ones who receive the gifts.
Our theme, Doyres/Generations, explores how Yiddish culture and
KlezKamp is passed through generations featuring KlezKamp doyres:
Chana Mlotek and son Zalmen, mother/daughter Elaine Hoffman-Watts and
Susan Watts, Anita Norich and father Isaac, Pearl Sapoznik and son plus
others. Our anniversary gives us a chance to dip into our archives to
show rare classroom videos of beloved KlezKamp teachers no longer with
us, and to also issue a special commemorative 2-CD anthology highlighting
20 years of our incomparable staff concerts. more….

In six weeks time the International Jewish Music Festival 2012 will
start. Mames Babegenush and Gerard Edery will kick off the event on
Wednesday 10th October with an opening concert in the Portugese
Synagoge. On Thursday and Friday in the Compagnietheater,
more than 100 musicians from 14 countries will try and secure their
place in the finals on Saturday. On Sunday it’s your turn! Take
your pick from six workshops on offer or visit the Jewish cultural
market. A winners’ concert and jam session concludes the
festivities.
