Informal and at times competitive, Georgian table singing, presented by members of the Zekari Georgian Men’s Choir and Yiddish zingerayen, presented by some of the finest proponents of the tradition, including Michael Alpert, Carol Freeman, Sarah Gordon, Esther Gottesman, Janet Leuchter, Jerry Marcus, Ethel Raim, Paula Teitelbaum and Josh Waletzky, exemplify a practice found in many cultures of using the time after a meal to carry on in song.

The first part spotlights one of the most popular musicals of all times –
Fiddler on the Roof. This year Fiddler celebrates its 50th anniversary.
It first opened on Broadway on September 22, 1964 and still has great
appeal around the world. As well as selections from the show, you’ll hear
an interview with Theodore Bikel and a comic take based on the musical by
Dudu Fisher,
However the real inspiration for this show came from Stephen Pearl of Stage
Stars Records. The show, which takes place in Eastern Europe in 1905 has normally had an orchestra. However, if you lived in Anatevka you would have been listening to Klezmorim. Therefore Pearl has re orchestrated and recorded new version of Fiddler with a klezmer band using instruments that Klezmer musicians play and a full cast of performers.…

Warsaw, Poland–The Grand Opening of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews will take place on October 28, 2014. At this time, the 8-gallery Core Exhibition, presenting 1,000 years of Jewish life in Poland, will be unveiled to the public. This announcement follows closely on that of the appointment of the new Museum director, Dr. Dariusz Stola, who begins his position on March 1.
Even before its Grand Opening, the Museum has received accolades. The New York Times named the Museum’s Core Exhibition the one to watch in its “Great Expectations 2014” list. The Architectural Record featured the Museum building in its Design Vanguard 2013 issue.
The Museum held its soft opening on the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on April 19, 2013, and has since received more than 200,000 visitors.…

Michel Pardes has released a CD called Chansons Juives and has some videos on YouTube as well. This one is in French, but set in a kibbutz in Israel.
One song from the album is about the Kibbutz, Ayelet Hashahar. (Ayelet HaShahar is a kibbutz in northern Israel. Located on the Rosh Pina – Metulla road, it is approximately 35 kilometers south of Kiryat Shmona.) A lot of tourists stay there and there’s a museum for the Hazor dig. Pardes sings the praises of this kibbutz in his song. Not all the songs on the album are the same in style.

Sara Hecht of Brooklyn, NY has released a new CD of Jewish songs called “Pieces”. It’s not your ordinary Jewish recording, but has all original songs (but one) written and sung by Sara in English. It’s an album of searching for, and finding, faith in Judaism and Gd. Sara’s music is arranged and performed by some key musicians, including Ian Freitor who made many of the arrangements of the songs. The first piece leads you into a country genre, but moves quickly into more soul and even some rock riffs here and there. There are some moving songs, including “Chana” which retells the story of Hannah and her seven sons in a heroine-point-of view way. Many of the songs are really contemporary female drashes in search of, and in thanks for, the Jewish faith.…

It is with profound sadness that we tell of the passing of Beyle Schaechter-Gottesman, a Yiddish poet, writer, songwriter and one of America’s foremost writer of new Yiddish songs. She was buried on Dec. 1, 2013.
A newly composed Chanukah song written as a response to some vandalism at the Northeastern campus. This is a video by students at NU and some of the neighboring campuses. Music in response … a wonderful way to say “we’re here”. And it’s a delightful song. I think you’ll enjoy it.

Chana Mlotek had an amazing memory for all the Yiddish songs and materials she worked with. She was certainly one of the giants of Yiddish music in the world, and in her years of contribution she shared with the the rest of us insights into her vast knowledge. She was a very generous with her knowledge and time helping those who came to find resources of Jewish music. Also featured will be the newly commissioned song-cycle, “Perhaps a Butterfly,” composed by Eliot Bailen in memory of Cantor Garfein’s great-grandmother, Settchen Feist who after being sent to Theresienstadt, subsequently perished in Auschwitz. The song-cycle utilizes four poems written by children of Theresienstadt.
Rodeph Sholom’s Organist, J. David Williams and an augmented professional choir, will accompany the cantors. Kristallnacht occurred exactly 75 years ago on the night of November 9, 1938 and marked the beginning of the Holocaust.…

Down Home: The Cantata was performed on May 12, 2013 at Beth Meyer Synagogue in Raleigh, NC by the Triangle Jewish Chorale, conducted by Lorena Guillen. Stories Part 1 is part 2 of 7. The cantata is a musical depiction of Jewish life in North Carolina since the early 20th century, with recorded oral histories playing over music for chorus and orchestra.
