Zamir ‘Kibbitzes’ with Gevatron

Israel Prize winners, The Gevatron: The Israeli Kibbutz
Singers, will perform with America’s foremost Jewish choral ensemble, the Zamir
Chorale of Boston, on Thursday evening, October 18, 7:30 pm at
Congregation Kehillath Israel in Brookline.
The Israel Prize is the most prestigious award handed
out by the State of Israel and is presented annually for
distinguished achievement in scholarship, the arts, or
public service. The Gevatron, which received the
award in May, was founded in the same year as Israel
and is the best-known and most popular traditional
folk-singing group in the country. The exclusive Boston
concert will include Hebrew music in two very different
forms – the exquisite artistry of the Zamir along with
the rousing folk music of the Gevatron.

Chamber Music at Rodeph Sholom Presents Sephardic Melody

On February 2 at 1pm, in Schnurmacher Chapel, Chamber Music at Rodeph
Sholom will celebrate Sephardic Melody, a rich cultural heritage
expressed both in contemporary music and traditional, which blends
influences from the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, Turkey, Greece,
and the Mediterranean. Guest artists, Paul Woodiel, on fiddle, and
guitarist Steve Gibb join cellist Eliot Bailen and flutist Susan
Rotholz in a program of Sephardic instrumental and vocal
interpretations both ancient and new, including music from the 19th
century collections of Emanuel Aguilar, the pianist composer, and
brother of the remarkable author and Jewish historian Grace Aguilar.
Chamber Music at Rodeph Sholom, under the artistic direction of Eliot
Bailen, highlights both the best of the chamber music repertory and

Amsterdamse Muziekgebouw International Jewish Music Festival 2008

Van 9 tot en met 11 mei 2008 zal in het Amsterdamse Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ een
driedaags concours van Joodse muziek worden gehouden. Kaartverkoop is net van start
gegaan.

Uit 16 landen zijn inmiddels 25 ensembles uit uiteenlopende genres gekozen om deel
te nemen. Zij zullen volks- en popmuziek, klezmer, klassiek en balkanmuziek ten
gehore brengen. De vertegenwoordigde landen zijn Wit-Rusland, Servië, Duitsland,
Frankrijk, België, Italië, Engeland, Israël, Argentinië, Griekenland, Venezuela,
Chili, Mexico, de Verenigde Staten en natuurlijk ook Nederland. De deelnemers aan

Talia Applebaum Flashes in the Darkness Album

Talia Applebaum Flashes in the DarknessSeveral times in the last year (or so) there have been concerts for women based on the album by Talia Applebaum Flashes in the Darkness. It deserves another look for the humour, fun, a bit of blues, a little jazz, a bit of funk, but mostly American folk. Talia is writing about the stuff of her chosen life with the Breslov Hassidmi, and the way religious devotion permeates her life, blended into ‘the everyday.’ The music gives a window into that world –that Talia obviously relishes– for the rest of us. All music and lyrics are by Talia, including blending English and Hebrew with an all female accompaniment. Occasionally the melody and words don’t quite make it, but most often they do, and music cleverly wraps into the lyric.The best piece, (or maybe better to say, the one more universally related to all Jews’ experience), is “Perservere” with arrangement and piano by Shana Friedman, which could fit into any Jewish denomination’s repertoire.…

Bernstein: A Jewish Legacy
An encore performance of the recently sold-out program at The Jewish Museum and
part of the city-wide festival Bernstein: The Best of all Possible Worlds.
The concert of mostly unknown Bernstein works on Jewish themes, narrated by Jack
Gottlieb, Bernstein’s longtime editor, sheds new light on some of the composer’s
more celebrated pieces. A number cut from West Side Story, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim,
combined with another piece from an abandoned project with lyrics by Betty Comden
and Adolph Green, reveals a surprising transformation as a choral setting in Hebrew.
Among the other works are world premieres of “A Choral Quilt” (arranged by Gottlieb)
and a song Bernstein wrote in reaction to anti-Semitism.…

Musica Sacra will explore Jewish choral
repertoire that juxtaposes the sacred and secular, the ancient and
contemporary, the traditional and innovative. The concert, entitled
Give Ear to Thy People: Choral Music from the Jewish Tradition, will
feature Paths of Stone and Water, a world premiere written for Musica
Sacra by Osnat Netzer, Israeli composer and pianist. The concert also
includes Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning, which sets the Genesis
creation story, music by Noam Elkies, Yiddish choral music from the
early 20th century, and other selections from the Jewish diaspora.
