The work, with music by Elizabeth Swados, writer/director, Cecilia Rubino, the poet, Paula Finn, and designed by Bonnie Roche-Bronfman, commemorates the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911. The fire was a completely devastating tragedy that resulted in the loss of life of over 146 working Jewish and Italian girls. Trapped behind locked doors, the tragedy led to workplace reforms and galvanized the Progressive Movement. To read more about this event see:

Israeli-American violinist Yuval Waldman will be giving a solo recital of “Music Forgotten and Remembered” at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall on Tuesday March 29, 2011, at 8 PM. The program presents rarely performed gems composed by Eastern European Jews, many of whom perished during World War II or were silenced by Soviet repression.

Born in the Ukraine to Holocaust survivors and the Artistic Director of Music Bridges International, Waldman was able to rediscover these pieces by searching music libraries and obscure music collections in Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, and Israel. They represent a wide spectrum of stylistic influences on Jewish composers: impressionistic, neoclassical, folk, and klezmer.…

שושנה דמארי נולדה בתימן בשנת 1923 ועלתה ארצה שנתיים לאחר מכן. כבר כנערה החלה דמארי לשיר כשהצטרפה לסטודיו לדרמה “שולמית” בתל אביב. בשנת 1943 הצטרפה לתיאטרן המוזיקלי “לי לה לו” שאת מרבית פזמוניו כתבו המשוררים נתן אלתרמן ומשה וילנסקי. שירם “כלניות”, שביצעה על במת התיאטרון ב-1946, הפך להיות שירה הידוע ביותר ועל אף שנכתב כשיר טבע, הוא נתפס באותה תקופה כשיר מחאה נגד הבריטים (שחיילי הצנחנים שלו, בעלי הכומתות האדומות כונו “כלניות”).

Service (Avodath Hakodesh) for orchestra, chorus, and baritone soloist.
Sacred Service has rarely been presented by young people, and its
performance on August 4th will be an artistic point of pride for Usdan, and
for its partner organization, UJA-Federation of New York.

Usdan’s senior orchestra and chorus will close the Center’s August 4th Gala
Concert with two parts of Sacred Service. The ensembles, composed of high
school-aged music students, will be conducted by Adam Glaser, a Usdan Center

Chamber Music – New York Style” at Temple Israel of the City of New York

On Thursday, April 22 at 8 PM, the Musicians of Lenox
Hill, under the artistic direction of Soo-Kyung Park, will perform “Chamber Music –
New York Style” at Temple Israel of the City of New York, 112 East 75th Street, New
York City The program includes Three American Piecesfor flute and piano by Lukas
Foss, Gershwin’s Embraceable You and I’ve Got Rhythm arranged for solo piano by Earl
Wilde, Dvořák’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in Eb Major, B 162, Op.87 and Luminaria for
violin and harp by Kenji Bunch, who has been called “a composer to watch” by the New
York Times and is quickly emerging as one of the most prominent American composers
of his generation.

In the Jewish legal tradition there are rules restricting the female voice (kol isha) in public religious rituals. In a unique pre-Pesach program we celebrate these voices. Inspired by artist Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party, an installation on permanent exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum celebrating famous women, we present a new take on a uniquely Jewish ‘dinner party’—the Passover seder. Join us to hear the glorious voices of Jewish women who will present familiar and not so familiar seder melodies reflecting the richness of Jewish music and the spiritual and aesthetic power of women’s voices. Yale Strom — In Memory Of

Dec. 16th at 7pm the world premiere of
YALE STROM’S quartet
“IN THE MEMORY OF…”

In the summer of 2008, musician Yale Strom traveled to Romania and discovered a musical treasure trove. In the upstairs women’s balcony of the 1871 synagogue of Carei he found a box of old books including the cantor’s music book with over 250 melodies notated by hand. THIS ROMANIAN JEWISH MUSICAL TREASURE HAD BEEN LOST UNTIL STROM’S DISCOVERY. In Memory of is a performance based upon the cantorial music he uncovered, and is dedicated to the Jews who perished during the Holocaust. Virtuoso cellist Mike Block and his string quartet will perform the new compositon.

After the quartet Cantor Ari Priven (Cong. Bnai Jeshurun) will sing some of the melodies from the “lost” cantor’s book and then Yale Strom and Mike Block will perform melodies from the same work as klezmer pieces.…

“Funky Music With a Jewish Twist” is what Mama Doni (aka Doni Zasloff) and her Band
will bring to Tikvat Israel on Sunday, December 13 in a free concert open to the
entire community. Winners of the 2008 “Simcha Award” at the International Jewish
Music Festival in Amsterdam, the Band’s repertoire is a wild mix of musical
styles–reggae, folk, classic rock, country, hip hop, klezmer, and theatrical–woven

Marhulet “DYBBUK” String Quartet Premiere

The string quartet Dybbuk by Wlad Marhulet was written for the New York based “J.A.C.K.” quartet. The piece is inspired by Jewish folklore, in which a Dybbuk is a malicious possessing spirit, believed to be the dislocated soul of a dead person. The piece depicts two aspects of Dybbuk – its wild and aggressive nature, as well as its memories from the past life full of suffering and tears.

Making its U.S. debut, Amsterdam’s Apollo Ensemble performs a concert of Baroque Jewish musical treasures, one night only, at the Kennedy Center. A highlight is the American premiere of Dio, Clemenza e Rigore, an anonymously composed oratorio for an eighteenth-century Italian Jewish holiday synagogue service. Don’t miss this rarely performed work. This concert is presented by Pro Musica Hebraica, devoted to presenting Jewish classical music, much of it believed lost, forgotten, or rarely performed, in a concert hall setting.

AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM ON NOVEMBER 5

The Jewish Museum will present The Jewish Romantics, a concert
celebrating the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth, at 1109 Fifth Avenue
at 92nd Street on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. This performance features a roster
of gifted young artists from Mannes College, which continues its yearlong music
festival, “The Mendelssohn Salon.” Felix Mendelssohn and his musically talented
sister, Fanny, were hosts and guests at cultural gatherings known as salons, which
included the great composers of their day. This concert explores the music of the
Mendelssohns and of other important Jewish composers of the 19th century Romantic
period.

The November 5 program is a co-production of Mannes College, The New
School for Music, and The Jewish Museum.…

LIFE,”A CONCERT FOR SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN & CHILDREN
Manhattan’s Congregation Rodeph Sholom and The Riverside Church are proud to
jointly present Celebrating Life!, a concert to raise funds for the Project People
Foundation (PPF) and the women and children of South Africa’s townships.

PPF is a New York-based non-profit organization founded in 1995 that builds bridges
between caring communities in the United States and women and students in South
Africa. PPF is helping South Africans as they strive for economic independence and
access to education despite the challenges of apartheid’s legacy, AIDS and poverty.

The concert will be held on October 29, 2009 at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 7 West
83rd Street, Manhattan, starting at 6:30pm. It will feature a number of distinguished
musical artists, among them Diana Solomon-Glover, noted soprano soloist at The

“DEBBIE & FRIENDS:” CONCERT TO BENEFIT HUC-JIR AND ITS SCHOOL OF SACRED MUSIC

Launching of National Cantorial Scholarship Initiative
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, legendary American Jewish composer,
singer, and recording artist, Debbie Friedman, will be the featured
performer at a concert to benefit Hebrew Union College – Jewish
Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) and its School of Sacred Music (SSM).

“Debbie & Friends” will also include performances by The Afro-Semitic
Experience, HaZamir (the International Jewish High School Choir), The
Western Wind, HUC-JIR Alumni, Faculty and Students, as well as surprise
guests. All will be performing the music of the woman who the Jerusalem
Post has called a “phenomenon” and the New York Times has lauded for
creating “a powerful and euphoric body of work.”

In 2007, Debbie was appointed to the Faculty of the Hebrew Union College
– School of Sacred Music and the fact that the concert is a benefit in
support of HUC-JIR and the SSM is something that is of great importance
