Special Features:
Jews in the various Ghettos during the Shoah had numerous
cabarets of musicians and singers. Songs ranged from the sad
and deeply somber in response to the death and horrific
conditions within and without of the Ghettos, to parodies on the
Nazis, to the typical songs sung in the cabarets of Europe before
the war. The caliber was so high as to attract the attendance of
German soldiers out of uniform.

Our Jewish Ghetto Cabaret program will be rich and varied and
be presented by a small musical ensemble, soloists, and the
Mak’haylah.…

Karl Goldmark was a key figure of the musical culture of the Austro-Hungarian
Monarchy. He was born in a Hungarian city as a son of a Jewish chazzan, but his
activity concentrated mostly to Vienna. He considered himself Hungarian, but all of
his operas were composed in German and, except Gatz von Berlichingen, premiered in
Vienna. Thus, his life and oeuvre represents not only the problematic questions of
citizenship, religion and national identity in Central Europe at the turn of the
century, but also their impact on a variety of musical genres (operas, symphonic
works, chamber music, choral music, works for piano and songs).…

2013 European Cantors Convention

The European Cantors Association is delighted to announce the next European Cantors Convention.

It will take place in London, at Central Synagogue, from Monday 17 to Thursday 20 June 2013, followed by a Shabbaton 21/22 June. The convention will open with a concert on Monday 17 June.

The Guest cantors will be the incredible composer, practitioner and educator Sol Zim from New York, and the outstanding teacher / practitioner who proved so excellent and popular last year Yehezkel Klang from Israel.

This convention is for practicing prayer leaders of all backgrounds, for choirmasters and choristers and for congregants – and for anyone interested in the music of the synagogue. The subject will be Shabbat Unwrapped: We will be working in small groups with our guest teachers to uncover everything you need to know about the music of Shabbat services.…

Second Annual Clarinet and Klezmer in Safed, Israel

The Old City of Safed will host an international group of musicians, for the Second Annual Clarinet and Klezmer in the Galilee program of Clarinet Master Classes and Performances, Aug 15-22, 2005. This year’s program will be under the Artistic Directorship of Giora Feidman, Master Klezmer and Classical Clarinetist. The ever-popular Safed Klezmer Festival will follow, from Aug 23-25.
