Presented in Association with The National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene
Zalmen Mlotek, Artistic Director of the National Yiddish Theatre – Folksbiene and one of the world’s leading authorities on Yiddish music, joins guest vocalist Magda Fishman for a moving musical journey that follows the migration of Yiddish songs from Eastern Europe to the bustling streets of New York’s Lower East Side and onto the Broadway stage and Hollywood screen.
Mlotek vibrantly illuminates how Yiddish music helped shape and inspire American music from the likes of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cab Calloway, Neil Sedaka, and many more popular American musical icons. With simultaneous English translation on a large screen.
Guest vocalist Magda Fishman served in the Israeli Army Orchestra and was lead singer for the hit Israeli Dance/Pop group Power Source. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the Apollo Theater, and the Prague State Opera.
Hanukkah Reception with the Artists after the Show!
“Deserves at least three cheers. His work is both fresh and true to its Yiddish sources.”
