Violinist Alicia Svigals, who is considered by many to be the world’s leading klezmer fiddler, was a founder of the renowned Jewish roots groups the Klezmatics, and of her current band, the all-female Mikveh. As a musician and composer, she has worked with Itzhak Perlman, the Kronos Quartet, playwrights Tony Kushner and Eve Ensler, Allen Ginsburg, Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, Hasidic superstar Avraham Fried, and singer/songwriter Debbie Friedman.

She has been at the forefront of the Klezmer revival, rediscovering and reinventing the sound of the Klezmer fiddle, the central instrument in klezmer music before the Holocaust. A musician and composer, Svigals is widely acclaimed for her virtuosic technique and lyricism.

Svigals will be joined by an old-world string band made up of Boston’s finest klezmer musicians, including members of the Klezmer Conservatory Band and of Andy Statman’s ensemble: Jim Guttman, bass; Miriam Rabson and Rohan Gregory, violins; Pete Rushefsky, tsimbl; and Larry Eagle, percussion.

KLEZCALIFORNIA:June 22 – 27, 2003

A Summer Day Camp for All Ages Featuring Klezmer Music, Yiddish Language and Folk Arts.

Enjoy five days of music and culture with the all-stars of a generation that turned its back on the melting pot and launched a revival of the Jewish instrumental music of Eastern Europe known as klezmer.

This celebration of klezmer music, Yiddish language and folk arts will take place June 22 – 27th in San Francisco. “KlezCalifornia” will inspire people of all ages and backgrounds, amateurs and professionals, secular and religious, musicians and music lovers.

Teachers include:

* Henry Sapoznik, Peabody Award-winning presenter of the Yiddish Radio Project, broadcast this past year on National Public Radio; (banjo)

* Michael Alpert, musical director of the Emmy Award-winning PBS special “In the Fiddler’s House,” with Yitzhak Perlman; (accordion, fiddle) and

* Frank London, trumpeter for the world-renowned Klezmatics.

Also Naomi Seidman, Jewish Studies professor, GTU; Adrienne Cooper, Yiddish singer extraordinaire; Michael Wex, the Lenny Bruce of the klezmer revival, and more. . .

The program will take place from 9 – 6 pm daily at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay, in San Francisco, with special events in the evening.

Instructors will introduce newcomers of all ages to klezmer music, teach new licks to experienced players, and lead Yiddish songs. Non-musicians can learn traditional dance, pick up some Yiddish, read short stories in translation,
practice paper cutting (a traditional Jewish folk art), hear the history of Yiddish radio, and revel in Jewish humor.

A full children’s program is included for ages 5-12.

“Yiddish culture is a treasure that can help other Jews have a sense of who they are, where they came from,” says Harvey Varga, a former Stanford instructor, who will teach Yiddish. The camp is also for anyone who simply loves the music and wants to learn more about the community that produced it.

A New York-based organization, Living Traditions, has held very popular winter-time “KlezKamps” for the past 18 years, including two in California. Now, a local organization, KlezCalifornia, Inc. is giving Californians a chance to enjoy and celebrate the 1,000 year old culture known as Yiddishkayt, closer to home.

Tuition is $305 for children, $320 for teens (12-17), $390 for adults, including four lunches. Separate registration is available for individual days, courses, or evening programs. Advance registration is required; no drop-ins.

KlezCalifornia is presented in association with the Jewish Music Festival and co-sponsored by the Berkeley Richmond and Osher Marin Jewish Community Centers, Lehrhaus Judaica, and Yiddishkayt Los Angeles. For registration and
information, contact Julie Egger, director, at (415) 789-7679, www.klezCalifornia.org or info@klezcalifornia.org

KLEZFEST IN ST PETERSBURG 2003

The Center for Jewish Music of the Jewish Community Center of St.
Petersburg is proud to announce “KlezFest in St. Petersburg 2003,” an
international seminar on the traditional music of Eastern European
Jewry, to be held July 12-16, 2003 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“KlezFest in St. Petersburg,” now in its seventh year, is the oldest
Klezmer seminar in Russia. The 2003 festival will include
master-classes on Yiddish folk songs and Klezmer music, workshops on
Yiddish folklore and Yiddish dance, lectures, concerts, and two
excursions: “Jewish St. Petersburg” and “Rivers and Canals of St.
Petersburg.” Our staff will include world-famous musicians — the
world’s leading expert on Yiddish dance, violinist, accordion player,
vocalist, and ethnomusicologist Michael Alpert from New York,
wonderful Yiddish singer and storyteller Shura Lipovsky from Amsterdam,
and the outstanding Klezmer clarinetist from Berlin, Christian Dawid.

“KlezFest in St. Petersburg,” dedicated to bringing Klezmer music and
Yiddish culture back to the lands of their birth, includes Jewish
musicians from the vibrant centers of the Jewish renaissance across
the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union.

This year again we are pleased to announce a special program for
lovers of Yiddish music and culture from other parts of the globe. We
are asking for a contribution of $500 ($400 for those who speak either
Russian or Yiddish). This sum will include food and lodging in St.
Petersburg for 5 days and the entire seminar program, including
interpreters when needed, concerts and the two excursions.
Participants will pay their own transportation to St. Petersburg.

For more information, please contact the Jewish Community Center of
St. Petersburg via fax at (+7-812) 314-5117, or e-mail frenk@lea.spb.su.

Rosenbergs & Meeropol Commemorated in Concerts
by Metropolitan Philharmonic Chorus and Oceanside Chorale

2003 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Julius & Ethel Rosenberg
(June 19, 1953) and the 100th anniversary of the birth of the man who adopted
their orphaned sons, Abel Meeropol (b. Feb. 14, 1903). In conjunction with
these two anniversaries, The Metropolitan Philharmonic Chorus, founded in
1988 by composer/conductor Leonard Lehrman, under the aegis of The Professor
Edgar H. Lehrman Memorial Foundation, will perform Leonard Lehrman’s cantata,
We Are Innocent, on texts from the Rosenbergs’ letters, at the Puffin
Cultural Forum, 30 Oakdene Ave., Teaneck NJ Sun. June 15 at 4:00 p.m., and at
Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, 30 W. 68 St. in Manhattan, Wed. June 18 at 7:00
p.m.

Tenor Gregory Mercer will sing Julius. Soprano Helene Williams will sing
Ethel. The program will open with Lehrman’s setting of Meeropol’s
poem, “Conscience,” which won the first Sunrise/Sunset Competition and was
premiered with an orchestra of 55 and a chorus of 160 at Bald Hill by the
Brookhaven Choral Festival July 13, 2002. Also on the program are settings
of Meeropol texts by Meeropol himself, Elie Siegmeister, and Earl Robinson,
namely the famous patriotic song, “The House I Live In,” in a bold version
different from the one Frank Sinatra sang.

Meeropol settings by Lehrman, Meeropol, Robinson and Siegmeister will also be
performed at the Oceanside Chorale’s spring concert, conducted by Leonard
Lehrman, Saturday, June 7 at 8:00 p.m. at Boardman Middle School on the
corner of Alice Avenue and Beatrice Avenue in Oceanside.

Just in time for the concerts, Original Cast Recordings is issuing a CD of
the Abel Meeropol Centennial Concert, which broke all previous attendance
records at Great Neck House this past February 9, and was recorded there and
at Queens College February 23. The Oceanside concert is co-sponsored by
Nassau Grants for the Arts, made possible in part with public funds from the
N.Y. State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered by The
L.I. Arts Council at Freeport.

The Original Cast Recordings CD is OC 6055 and may be ordered by phone
tollfree at 888-627-3993. For information on the Oceanside Chorale
concert June 7, please call Frank DeFontes at 516-764-2787. For information

Week 2 Klezmer music, song and dance

KlezFest London 2003

Sunday 6 July 11.00 am – Thursday 10 July 11.30pm

This is our third annual KlezFest in London and it will be more than ever
designed to meet the needs of instrumentalists, singers and dancers.

The most outstanding faculty members have been invited to guide and inspire
and impart their vast knowledge of Eastern European Jewish music and Yiddish
song. Expect to see
Michael Alpert for dance and song
Frank London for nigunim and brass
Deborah Strauss for violin and dance
Jeff Warschauer plucked strings
Stuart Brotman for the base line instruments
Christian Dawid for clarinet
Alan Bern (piano and accordion) will be the music co-ordinator and he has
prepared a vigorous curriculum with clear emphasis on the elements of
Klezmer, the style, ornamentation, rhythms and how to set up a band.
There will be masterclasses for serious Yiddish singers as well as the
fabulous Yiddish chorus, led by the incomparable Zalmen Mlotek.
We will even have Josh Dolgin the master of HIP HOP Klez so anything can
happen. Bands attending as a group get to perform to each other and the
public in the Klezmer the new Generation concert and even in the park. Our
own Sophie Solomon of Oi-Va-Voi and others will be on board, so do book up
now for an exhilarating week. (Oi-Va-Voi are among the last 4 bands short
listed for the BBC World Music audience award!!)

Any musician or singer interested in any aspect of Jewish music will
benefit – whether you are a composer, a soloist, a member of an orchestra, a

so much for you to enjoy and imbibe at the JMI KlezFest in London.

York – Brave Old World. We might even get to hear the British Premiere of
the Hip Hop Khasene. For concert tickets the public can telephone 020 7960

In fact there is good reason to come for both weeks. Ot Azoy! and KlezFest
are closely connected and those learning Yiddish will be able to continue
their Yiddish studies as well as imbibe singing dancing drama and music.
For instrumentalists your clarinet (or fiddle) will sound better when you
have learned the Yiddish language. For singers what can I say, both these
weeks are indispensable and here on your doorstep, in the UK the gateway to
Europe. Those who did both weeks last year found they complemented each
other so well. (Imagine the withdrawal symptoms when the fortnight
eventually came to an end).

There is a reduction of £45 if you come for both weeks.
(scholarships are available for those unable to afford the full fee – please
don’t hesitate to ask about these)

Hotel (£65 per night) or University accommodation (£25 per night) can be
booked for you (see registration form for details) Those needing

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Simcha Klezmerband

I am pleased to be able to inform you of an exciting
forthcoming concert in the Baxter Concert Hall on
Tuesday 11th March at 8.15pm. There are several
unusual features about the concert: the band shares
the programme with an extraordinary and famous
Bulgarian folk singer called Valya Balkanska, whose
hit song apparently has been chosen to be beamed to
outer space on some spacecraft searching for
uncharted civilizations! Valya Balkanska performs
mostly with a solo bagpipist (Petar Yanev), but the Simcha Klezmerband hopes to accompany her toward the end of the evening.
The first half of the concert will feature popular
Cantor Ivor Joffe singing with the band. As usual the band will be performing new arrangements, and it is joined on this occasion by double bassist supremo Wolf Friedman, a Capetonian who has been in New York for the last 25 years, playing with the likes of Count Basie.
The concert is presented by Fay Singer in conjunction
with Gillian Lindner of the SA College of Music.
Tickets are R35 (there are concessions for students,
senior citizens and group bookings) from Computicket and early booking is advised. Please will you tell family and friends and join us. I hope to see you there! Best wishes, Matthew Reid (Director, Simcha Klezmerband)

A research associate at New York’s YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, Mr.
Alpert has conducted extensive research of traditional Jewish music and
dance throughout the U.S. and Eastern Europe. He was musical director of the
PBS Great Performances special Itzhak Perlman: In the Fiddler’s House,
executive producer of the Angel/EMI CD of the same title, and appeared with
Perlman on CBS’ The Late Show with David Letterman.

Raised in a Yiddish-speaking family, Michael Alpert is considered one of the
finest traditional Yiddish singers today, and is recognized for his original
Yiddish songs. He also plays accordion, fiddle and guitar and is expert in
the traditional dances of the culture.

This is a unique opportunity to learn Slavic/Yiddish songs, with one of the
very best bearers of the tradition. Michael’s workshops are not only
musically satisfying — they are also really entertaining. Come prepared to
sing AND to laugh!

Feel free to bring a tape recorder. You might also want to bring a bottle of
drinking water.
