Terezin, the “model concentration camp” established by the Nazis outside Prague,
became for a short time the meeting place for many of Europe’s finest musicians.
Violinist Randall Weiss will be joined by cellist Victoria Ehrlich and violist
Natalia Vershilova in performing string trios and duos by Gideon Klein, Hans Krasa,
and Zikmund Schul.

voice quartet comprising young soloists Marc Finer, Eliot

The Boston Jewish Film Festival and The MFA Film Program are pleased

on Sunday, June 3: Knowledge Is the Beginning at 1:30 pm and The
Ramallah Concert at 3:45 pm. Both of these films chronicle the
formation and livelihood of The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, founded
by conductor and Pianist Daniel Barenboim and writer Edward Said as a
way of promoting peace in the Middle East through collaborative

orchestra in both films.

returns to the Maverick on July 14 at 8:00 p.m. with tsimblist Pete
Rushefsky.
Ms. Svigals and Mr. Rushefsky brought down the house last summer at
Maverick, and this yearΒΉs concert is called “MahlerΒΉs World: Jewish Music in
the Hapsburg Empire.” The concert is part of MaverickΒΉs season-long
celebration of the centenary of Gustav MahlerΒΉs arrival in America to lead
the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.
Classical concerts are Saturday evenings at 6:00 and Sunday afternoons at
3:00, with jazz, world music, and klezmer on selected Saturday nights at

The Jewish Music Heritage Project is the ambitious undertaking of Cantor Sholom Kalib and The Jewish Music Heritage Project Boys’ and Men’s Choir. The purpose of the Jewish Music Heritage Project is to “document, catalog, and disseminate one of the great sacred musical traditions of the world, namely that of the Eastern European Synagogue, which is now in real danger of being lost forever.” So far, 2 vols of a 5 vol. set consisting of 20 books is being published by Syracuse University Press, and a 75 CD set of the music is envisioned. Rita Glassman, the Cantor of Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco, has released a new CD “Journey to Shabbat”. Rita is the composer and singer of an interpretive chant of the Hebrew prayer “Shema.” Her recording of the Shema, accompanied by the talented Jai Uttal and Geoffrey Gordon, can be heard on the CD-Sacred World Chants on the ‘Soundings of the Planet’ label. Her newest “Journey to Shabbat” CD was recorded in

Most of us have experienced “Jewish music,” whether it’s through
synagogue attendance, a bar mitzvah celebration, a klezmer concert, or
the playing of “Hava Nagila” at a baseball
game. The many different kinds of Jewish music are reflected by the
multitude of Jewish communities throughout the world, each having its
own unique set of experiences and values. This book puts the music into
a context of Jewish history, philosophy, and sociology.
Edelman begins 3,000 years ago, with a discussion of music in the Bible,
and then examines the nature of folk and liturgical music in the three
major Diaspora communities
that evolved over centuries, after the destruction of the Temple in
