The music of Sephardi Jewish communities is a diverse and complex
cultural phenomenon. Spanning the Mediterranean from the Western
Sephardic communities of Spain and Portugal to North Africa, the Ottoman
Empire and the Levant, the Sephardi world encompasses a vast geographic,
cultural and linguistic space. This presentation will offer a broad
overview of the development of academic scholarship on Western and

Hebrew College, 160 Herrick Road, Newton Centre. Auditions are by appointment only
and must be scheduled in advance by emailing manager@zamir.org.
Candidates must have excellent vocal quality, the ability to sight-read music, and
previous choral experience. In addition to the audition, candidates are required
to attend open rehearsals at Hebrew College on Tuesday, September 9 and 16 from
7:15 to 10:00 p.m. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays at Hebrew College, from 7:15
to 10:00 p.m., from September through early June.

We [YIVO] have indeed begun the work of digitizing Ruth Rubin’s collection of field recordings. A large portion of the materials were transferred and databased by Bay Area singer/instrumentalist Jeanette Lewicki over the summer with the support of New York’s Center for Traditional Music and Dance. Though far from completed, the tracks that have been processed are currently being prepared for on-site use in the not-too-distant future by YIVO Sound Archives consultant Matt Temkin.
Renewed interest in these treasures can be partially attributed to the posthumous publication of Yiddish Folksongs from the Ruth Rubin Archives edited by Chana Mlotek and Mark Slobin (Wayne University Press, 2007). Recent projects that utilize the songs include my own Saints and Tzadiks (songs from the Irish and Yiddish traditions developed together with Susan McKeown), Voices of Ashkenaz (German-Jewish song connections explored by Andreas Schmitges, Deborah Strauss, Svetlana Kundish and Thomas Fritze) and Alpen Klezmer (Bavarian and Yiddish songs with Andrea Pancur and Ilya Shneyveys).…

They’ve collaborated with The Arts Fuse: The Culture of New England, a discussion forum. The Second Songs of Life Choral-Orchestral Festival will take place in Bulgaria and Israel, Dec. 27, 2010 – Jan. 7, 2011. The European Cantors Association is delighted to announce the next European Cantors Convention.
It will take place in London, at Central Synagogue, from Monday 17 to Thursday 20 June 2013, followed by a Shabbaton 21/22 June. The convention will open with a concert on Monday 17 June.
The Guest cantors will be the incredible composer, practitioner and educator Sol Zim from New York, and the outstanding teacher / practitioner who proved so excellent and popular last year Yehezkel Klang from Israel.
This convention is for practicing prayer leaders of all backgrounds, for choirmasters and choristers and for congregants – and for anyone interested in the music of the synagogue. The subject will be Shabbat Unwrapped: We will be working in small groups with our guest teachers to uncover everything you need to know about the music of Shabbat services.…

Nunemaker CD Project – Work Has Special Relevance for Today
Clarinetist Richard Nunemaker has released a new CD “The Louisville
Project”, which features Meira Warshauer’s “Shevet Achim (Brothers Dwell).”
The Louisville Project (AUR CD 3127). The piece, for two bass clarinets, is a response to the troubled
relationship between the descendants of half-brothers Yitzchak and
Yishmael (sons of Abraham), now Israelis and Palestinians. Written in
fall, 2000, the piece roils with the conflict between the two peoples,
expressing both intense animosity and common identification. It has been
observed that the most strongly felt conflicts are between peoples whose
lives and histories are intertwined on many levels.

Chai Variations on Eliahu HaNavi was inspired by the folk song
Eliahu HaNavi (Elijah the Prophet), often sung during the closing
service of the Jewish Sabbath. The letters of Chai, which means
life or living in Hebrew, symbolically stand for the number 18;
hence, 18 variations. I decided to give the performer a choice
regarding the ordering of the variations as a reflection of my
sense of performance as a collaboration between performer and

The Basel Synagogue Choir, one of the rare synagogue choirs in continuous, uninterrupted existence in Europe from before the Holocaust, has recorded several CDs, and now has a new website at www.synagogenchorbasel.ch.
