Exploring the venerable and multifaceted culture of Iraqi Jewry
www.americansephardifederation.org< During the first half of the 20th century, Jews were virtually the only instrumentalists in the Iraqi musical scene. All the musicians from Iraq who attended the first Arabic music congress in Cairo in 1932 were Jewish (but one). With the exile of the Jewish community in the 1950’s, many famous Iraqi Jewish musicians immigrated to Israel. Their legacy is still strong today, both in the preservation of the traditional Iraqi Maqam, and in its influence on contemporary Israeli music.

West Bank Story wins Oscar for Best Live Action Short

Dear All,
I am thrilled to share with you the news that tonight we won an Oscar
for Best Live Action Short FIlm for the film West Bank Story,
directed by Ari Sandel.
This is a great victory for us as the film is a musical and the music
(the songs and the score which I composed) has a central and very
important role in the film (as in any musical).
I am so glad for this award because this film was created to revive
hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The film was

highlighted the courageous few who overcome the bias, follow true
love and struggle for peace.…

Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka

Announcing the new Klezmatics cd – just in time for your holiday pleasure!

The Klezmatics: Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka (Klezmatics Records, 2004)

In 1942, Woody Guthrie moved to Brooklyn and soon, through his mother-in-law, the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblat, he became involved with the Coney Island Jewish community. He wrote songs about Hanuka, about Jewish history and spiritual life and about World War II and the antifascist cause. After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. Lost for almost thirty years, Guthrie’s Jewish lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked the Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics. “Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanuka” is the first recorded release of this amazing material.…

Visit us during the day for some beautiful music of the High Holidays

I will continue to update the station over the next several weeks, removing
selichot services after selichot to make room for Yom Kippur music.
Eventually there will be 15 hours of music. Once at that point, I will
change the playlist from CD mode, to a shuffle so there will be a variety of

NEW YIDDISH/ENGLISH OPERETTA: Ballad of Monish

Marty Green productions introduces:

The Ballad of Monish
a one-man musical play
written and performed by Marty Green
Sunday Nov. 21 Berney Theater 123 Doncaster St. Winnipeg 2:00 pm/8:30 pm
Tickets: 2 for $25.00

Multi-talented Winnipeg-based interpreter of Yiddish culture Marty Green
introduces his latest offering in the form of a two-hour musical play, “The
Ballad of Monish”, based on a classic poem by I. L. Peretz. What starts out
as a Jewish retelling of the classic Faust legend quickly turns into a
rollicking, satirical look at traditional Jewish attitudes towards religion,
sex, and the non-Jewish world. Marty Green has taken this epic ballad and
adapted it to a lively jazz-klezmer setting, interleaving his own
razor-sharp English translations with the original Yiddish lyrics. There is
more info on the show at http://www.onforeignsoil.com/monish.htm
including an audio clip of the opening number.…
