The Basel Synagogue Choir, one of the rare synagogue choirs in continuous, uninterrupted existence in Europe from before the Holocaust, has recorded several CDs, and now has a new website at www.synagogenchorbasel.ch. The Basel Jewish community founded in 1805 Einheitsgemeinde ( United Community ) has also maintained a professional chazzan. Chazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo Dead at 92

Chazzan Abraham Lopes Cardozo z”l died February 21 at around 3am. He had been hospitalized for several days with breathing difficulties. Abraham Lopes Cardozo was born in Amsterdam, Holland on September 27, 1914. He was the great-grandson of the Chief Rabbi in Amsterdam and the son of the choir director of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue there. He came to his American post in 1946 and served Congregation Shearith Israel in New York for over 40 years. Cardozo’s recordings from 1959 were recently rereleased in time for the celebration of the 350th anniversary of Jews in America, and reviewed by this website: http://www.jmwc.org/NewCDReviews/shearithisraelcds.html

He was a made a Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau by Queen Beatrix of Holland on June 7, 2000.
Two years ago the Chazzan celebrated his 90th birthday in Amsterdam.…

Before the big klezmer bands of the new world arose with their brass and
drums, there were the archetypical Jewish orchestras of the old world, led by
the fiddle and bourne aloft by the otherworldy sounds of the harp-like
‘tsimbl’, or Jewish hammered dulcimer. Renowned violinist Alicia Svigals, a founder
of the Klezmatics and one of the world’s foremost klezmer fiddlers, presents a program
of those ancient and ecstatic Jewish melodies, accompanied by the scene’s
top players on fiddle, tsimbl and string bass: Mimi Rabson, Pete Rushefsky and
Jim Guttman.

Israeli & Ernest Bloch Music Competition 2012

Applications are now open for the Israeli Music Competition and the Ernest Bloch Music Competition.

The Israeli Music Competition was begun in 2008 and aims to familarise both professionals and students with the fascinating styles of Israeli music – a rich tapestry of sounds which produce a musical blend without equal; a fusion of Western musical idioms such as Klezmer (brought over with the first immigrants in the 1880s), and Eastern traditions brought by Jews from Arab countries.

The Ernest Bloch Music Competition was begun in 2009. Ernest Bloch (24 July 1880 ‚Äì 15 July 1959) was a Swiss-born, American-Jewish composer and, since the 50th anniversary of his death was commemorated in 2009, the addition of the Ernest Bloch Music Competition to the Israeli Music Competition has drawn much worldwide interest.…

Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn at The Jewish Museum

A recent acquisition to The Jewish Museum, Portrait of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, 1842, by
19th century German artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, has been added to
the “Modernity” section of Culture and Continuity. The subject of this
portrait was the sister of famous composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy,
a talented composer and musician in her own right. Fanny Hensel was
the wife of a fellow painter, Wilhelm Hensel, whom Oppenheim met in Rome
with the Nazarenes.

Songs of Life Festival in Bulgaria and Israel

The Songs of Life Festival will be held in
Israel and Bulgaria from Nov 21 – Dec 1, 2008. The festival will feature the Sacred
Service by Ernest Bloch.

The festival marks the 65th anniversary of the heroic rescue of 50,000 Bulgarian
Jews during World War II and serves as a celebration of the preservation of life.

Individual performers as well as choirs are invited to perform in the festival.
Performers will sing Bloch s Sacred Service in Bulgaria and Israel. The 12-day
itinerary also allows for individual presentations by guest choirs and opportunities
for sightseeing and guided tours. Auditors are also invited to attend the festival
and participate in the tours.

I grew up on the traditional music (my family is from Salonika, Greece), but I am also influenced by other musicial styles. Lori Cahan-Simon at Legacy Village in Cleveland

In Cleveland this Sunday, MAY 15, at Legacy Village,at Cedar and Richmond, The Workmen’s Circle Klezmer Orchestra, featuring singer/folklorist Lori Cahan-Simon, will be performing at Legacy Village this Sunday, May 15 at 2pm in a free outdoor concert of klez and Yiddish Theater standards. Come and have fun with the largest Klezmer Orchestra in the world!

Davidson and Robert Gardner in the roles of Sarah, Hagar, and
Abraham, and a chamber ensemble and chorus conducted by Michael
Adelson.

The Yiddishkeit Klezmer Ensemble will be:
– performing a concert at the historic folk venue Caffè Lena on Saturday night
(7:45pm-8:30pm)
– presenting an instrumental Klezmer workshop on Sunday early afternoon (noon-12:50pm)
– accompanying a Klezmer dance workshop led by Joe Kurland on Sunday afternoon
(2:15pm-3:30pm)

AUDITION FOR THE HARVARD YIDDISH PLAYERS’ FALL PRODUCTION OF SHULAMIS! Audition for Harvard’s landmark production of the most popular Yiddish play of all time – Shulamis: a timeless Biblical operetta of love and deception, of the price of …revenge and the power of forgiveness. Our production will feature a new translation, a new musical score, a live orchestra, masks, avant-garde design elements, and innovative choreography. Songs will be performed in Yiddish (with supertitles), while the dialogue will be in English. NO PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE OF YIDDISH REQUIRED. Actors and singers, please come prepared with a song (ideally a musical theater or opera selection). Dancers are encouraged to audition for our dance-only corps. Association for Canadian Jewish Studies Call for Papers

The Association for Canadian Jewish Studies/L’Association des études juives canadiennes (ACJS /l’AÉJC) will be holding its 34th Annual Conference May 30-June 1, 2010 at Concordia University in Montreal as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The conference provides a platform for original scholarly research in Canadian Jewish history, life and culture. Individuals are invited to send proposals for learned paper presentations in either English or French twenty minutes in
length (approximately 2,000 words) that concern some aspect of the Canadian Jewish experience.

Potential presenters are asked to submit a paper
proposal by Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The paper proposal should comprise a
400-word abstract formulated to clearly and concisely state the main argument
of the scholarly paper and indicate how it will contribute to existing
scholarship in the field of Canadian Jewish Studies.…
