Susan McKeown and Lorin SklambergIrish singer Susan McKeown and Klezmatics lead singer and accordionist, Lorin Sklamberg, present Saints & Tzadiks — a concert combining Yiddish and Irish songs. Culled from rare archive material and old recordings, McKeown and Sklamberg have selected songs on various themes from the Jewish and Irish traditions. The bulk of the Jewish material is drawn from the Ruth Rubin Archive at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. The Irish songs come from both the popular and the ancient Gaelic sean nos traditions.

Carl Nelkin, an amateur singer and lover of Jewish music in Ireland, has released a new CD of songs of ghettos and camps in World War II. Nelkin combines Irish and Jewish sentimentalities to these songs of the Partisans and Ghetto, all sung in the original Yiddish. The booklet contains the translations into English along with the texts in Yiddish, along with some nice accompaniments. It is hoped that this type of recording should encourage other small communities of Jews to share their creative works. Carl had released his first album “Irish Heart Jewish Soul: Favourite Irish and Jewish Songs” in 2003. Leonard Bernstein, Voices of the Jewish Diaspora and
Fugitives (composers who left Germany during the 1930’s), will all

If you want to listen to Irish music, but still support a Jewish group in Israel, then this is for you. Michal and Gal Shachar, and Eitan Hoffer along with former Riverdance percussionist, Abe Doron, founded a group that is touring Israel performing traditional Irish music. Based in Ma’ale Zvia, in the Galilee, the group, Evergreen, Yarok Ad in Hebrew, plays a host of various instruments. They have also composed some original songs in the genre. The website gives some information on purchasing a CD and going to their concerts. Maybe the music will make Israel greener, (but a little more rain would help as well). One can always hope– and that’s the brilliance of planting the Irish sound in the rockier soil of Israel. The Jewish Music Forum “American Jews, Music and the Memory of the Holocaust: 1945-1962” A music website is offering to help people find bands in Irish, German, Italian and Jewish music. The website is called By Jack Gottlieb Jack Gottlieb’s mission is to set the record straight. He wishes to clearly demonstrate through musical examples and technical musical means, that in fact, Jewish music from Yiddish song to synagogue melos, influenced American popular culture. This book could be a coffee table book, but it’s more. It could be the written record of years of Gottlieb’s programmatic material, but it’s more than that. Or, it could be the text of a course on Jewish influences on popular song, but it’s not quite that. It can be used as a broad reference work, and also has many elements of that. The book defies a neat categorization in terms of style, format and content, but has elements of each: an extensive, fascinating browse book, a music record with technical references, and a reference book with listings of hundreds of musical composers, lyricists, and songs of Jewish origin.
