In his latest book, Funny, It Doesn’t Sound Jewish, composer and
author, Jack Gottlieb chronicles how Jewish songwriters and composers
transformed American popular music of the mid-twentieth-century. Dr.
Gottlieb will play piano and show vintage images as he illustrates
the connection, citing instances where Yiddish songs and cantorial
music were adapted by Jewish songwriters as they penned tunes for Tin
Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood. The book (which includes a CD)
will be available at NAC member discount. A reception will follow.
Jazz composer and Bösendorfer piano artist Matt Savage and his Trio will celebrate his 16th birthday at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, 30 W. 68th Street, NYC, on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 8 pm with an electrifying performance of award winning original compositions and jazz standards. London is to have a Jewish music show once again after a 2-year absence. The Jewish
Program will air on east-London based ethnic radio station NuSounradio for an hour
every evening at 7pm.
Presenters Zev Gruber and Yitzchok Mordfield will bring listeners some of the latest
and greatest hits Up until June 2007, Soundradio 1503AM carried several Jewish
programmes, but upon its collapse that ended.
Now listeners will be able to once again tune in and hear Jewish music on the radio
by tuning in to the frequency of 92FM or at www.nusoundradio.com.
Yiddish singer living in Canada, Lenka has been involved with Yiddish music for years. Her arrangements are really quite unusual and satisfying. Lenka was raised in Prague, and her musical training included theater work and vocal training at the Prague Conservatory. Her album “Deep Inside,” which has received excellent reviews, is featured on the website. Many of the “lyrics deal with ‘Jewish’ topics: misunderstandings between observant/less observant Jews, the role of Yiddish, finding one’s Jewish identity, and issues from Israel.” Her Latest CD is “Peace Offerings.”

Celebrations: The Heritage Ensemble Interprets Festive Melodies from the Hebraic Songbook, the latest contemporary world music album was just released by Eugene Marlow¹s Heritage Ensemble.
The Heritage Ensemble is dedicated to the concert performance of
liturgical and folksong Hebraic melodies in various jazz, Afro-Cuban, and
Brazilian styles, with a touch of classicism for good measure.
Nine tracks: four from the Chanukah festival, two from Purim. An
original composition, Yotvata–a mixture of classical and jazz–celebrates
the creation of the leading dairy kibbutz in Israel. An eighth track,
Halleluyah, from the liturgy, is a solo piano arrangement.
· A unique feature of Celebrations is a ninth track narrated by Dr.
Marlow that describes The Heritage Ensemble¹s history, repertoire, and

Cantor Judy Greenfeld is the founder and spiritual leader of the Nachshon Minyan (www.nachshonminyan.org) in Encino, California. Cantor Judy Greenfeld did her undergraduate work at the University of Arizona and received her ordination as well as a Master s Degree in Jewish Sacred Music from the Academy for Jewish Religion, California (www.ajrca.org), a pluralistic rabbinical and cantorial seminary based in Los Angeles. Cantor Greenfeld is the co-author (with Dr. Tamar Frankiel) of two books, Minding the Temple of the Soul and Entering the Temple of Dreamswhich detail a new approach to Jewish prayer through movement and meditation. She has lectured and taught movement and prayer at retreats and synagogues around the United States. One of the highlights of Cantor Greenfeld’s work with the Nachshon Minyan includes authoring a prayer book which reflects a blending of Conservative and Reform traditions.…

Her mother Diana Hadjes and father Alfredo were from Aydin, Turkey. She studied at the Jewish Community School and the University in Milan. introduces his latest offering in the form of a two-hour musical play, “The
Ballad of Monish”, based on a classic poem by I. L. Peretz. What starts out
as a Jewish retelling of the classic Faust legend quickly turns into a
rollicking, satirical look at traditional Jewish attitudes towards religion,
sex, and the non-Jewish world. Marty Green has taken this epic ballad and
adapted it to a lively jazz-klezmer setting, interleaving his own
razor-sharp English translations with the original Yiddish lyrics. There is

Rebecca Teplow’s latest CD “Kaveh, Hope” has just been released. The songs are all in Hebrew and composed and arranged by Rebecca on liturgical texts. Rebecca’s strong embrace of text is clear and distinct. She has interestingly even composed variations of her own songs and presents “Gam Ki Elech” twice in different styles. I liked the Joni Mitchell clarity and simplicity of her word painting in “Esa Einei” and that is one of her real strengths. The rock idiom predominates as in pieces such as “Hinei Kel,” which also includes some fun instrumentals. Teplow’s use of contemporary musical idioms are muted but used in a effective way, as in the introduction to “Peyrasti,” which starts out in one idiom but morphs into a rock sequence with some nice guitar riffs.…

Meira Warshauer�s “Yishakeyni� (Sweeter than Wine) for soprano, flute
and piano will be performed across the U.S. by the Jerusalem Lyric Trio
