WorldCat.org Now Available

OCLC, the central catalog organization of most major college, university and public libraries, announces

This site—and a downloadable WorldCat search box you can easily add to

just the smaller data subsets utilized by Open WorldCat partner sites such
as Google, Yahoo! Search and others. WorldCat.org builds on the success of
OCLC’s Open WorldCat Program that has elevated the visibility of library
materials on the open Web since the summer of 2003.

The main attraction of the new site is the WorldCat search box. Web users

ROPEADOPE TO RELEASE ‘THE HARLEM EXPERIMENT’ ON OCTOBER 30

From ShoreFire Media:
When you think of New York City’s Harlem, you may think of James Brown at the
Apollo, Duke Ellington at the Savoy or Bill Clinton’s offices on 125th Street. But
did you know that Harlem was also home to large numbers of Eastern European Jews in
the early 20th century? Some of the grandest brownstones in the Mount Morris Park
neighborhood were Jewish family homes.

Grammy-winning producer Aaron Levinson pays homage to the vibrant history of Harlem
in ‘The Harlem Experiment’, to be released by Ropeadope Records October 30th.
Featuring musicians such as clarinetist Don Byron of the Grammy-awarded Klezmatics,
trombonist Steve Bernstein and many other notable jazz musicians, it showcases
Harlem as melting pot and offers a unique version of the Yiddish folk song “Bei Mir
Bist Du Schoen,” with a soaring solo by Byron.…

– especially prepared for the JCC – that played to sell-out audiences in

In Sidney M. Goldin and Ivan Abramson’s silent movie (1923), streetwise
New Yorker Mollie (Molly Picon) travels to her demure cousin’s wedding
in a traditional Polish shtetl. Lovas, Moshikop and Kriwaczek’s cheeky
new score takes us from traditional klezmer to contemporary electronica,
from liturgical melancholy to party pop kitsch and from vaudeville to
breakbeat.…

Celebrating Women’s Voices

An amazing event will transpire on
Wed, March 10, 2010
5:30pm – 8:30pm
Central Synagogue
123 East 55th Street
New York, NY

In the Jewish legal tradition there are rules restricting the female voice (kol isha) in public religious rituals. In a unique pre-Pesach program we celebrate these voices. Inspired by artist Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party, an installation on permanent exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum celebrating famous women, we present a new take on a uniquely Jewish ‘dinner party’—the Passover seder. Join us to hear the glorious voices of Jewish women who will present familiar and not so familiar seder melodies reflecting the richness of Jewish music and the spiritual and aesthetic power of women’s voices. The evening will begin with a light supper and study of rabbinic texts taught by Rabbi Judith Hauptman, Talmud professor at Jewish Theological Seminary.…

White Christmas: The Story of an American Song

By Jody Rosen

Writing a popular book about a popular song should merit some attention, so it’s not surprising that no less than four items appeared in The New York Times about this book. It’s supposed to be a book about one song. But, of course, it isn’t really. It’s a book about acculturation, assimilation and cultural impact. For readers of the Jewish Music WebCenter, these issues raised by White Christmas, may ultimately deal out the moral: we have only ourselves to “blame” –or– “congratulate” –as the view may be.

Irving Berlin, born as Izzy Baline, was of the generation of Jewish immigrants who wanted nothing more than to be thoroughly assimilated and thoroughly American. Berlin was one of the most successful examples of this, both in his personal and professional life.…

Lincoln Center Presents “The Passion of Osvaldo Golijov”

January 22-February 22, 2006

A festival dedicated to the evocative, exuberant work of this contemporary Argentine-American composer. Osvaldo Golijov was born in 1960 and grew up in an Eastern European Jewish household in La Plata, Argentina. With a piano teacher mother and physician father, Golijov was raised surrounded by classical music, Jewish liturgical and klezmer music, and the new tango of Astor Piazzolla. After studying piano and composition at the local conservatory he moved in 1983 to Israel, where he studied with Mark Kopytman at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy and immersed himself in the colliding musical traditions of that city. Upon moving to the US in 1986, Golijov earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with George Crumb. Upon naming him its composer of the year for 2006, Musical America declared “The 45-year old Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov has emerged as one of the leading figures of contemporary music, with a multicultural style of exuberant dance rhythms and raw emotion that connects instantly to a wide range of audiences.”

In addition to performances of Golijov’s major works, Lincoln Center’s “The Passion of Osvaldo Golijov” features three late-night concerts in the Allen Room, including a performance by David Krakauer’s Klezmer Madness!…
